On January 15, 2282, on the planet Alcyone 998877.
In this desolate mining planet, the sky and the ground were a dull gray, and only the local plants, which resembled moss, swaying in the wind, gave the place a slight hint of life.
In a valley surrounded by mountains, there was a vast area of artificial structures. Dozens of hemispherical buildings, reflecting a metallic sheen, looked like a cluster of marbles buried in the ground. This was the property of the Chinese Star Mining and Metallurgy Group, one of the eight mining bases on this planet.
Dozens of mining vehicles, resembling giant scorpions, were busy around the area. Over a hundred transport ships, shaped like ladybugs, shuttled back and forth between the mining vehicles and the base. After the ores were crushed, initially selected, refined, and graded in the ore processing workshop, they were sent to the smelting workshop for smelting. Various metal ingots were then transported to the airport by the company's giant transport ships and delivered to places where they were needed.
"Damn, this is really a hell of a place! And I have to stay here for three more years!" Wen Desi looked at the desolate scenery before him and sighed helplessly.
Mr. Wen Desi was the head of the Star Mining and Metallurgy Group on this planet, the general manager of the 36th mining area and the manager of the 1st sub-area. Although he was in charge of eight mining bases, he only had seven subordinates, or more precisely, seven natural persons, who were the seven sub-area managers.
Yes, in this era, the title of manager had become devalued, and almost anyone was a manager. The general manager wasn't much better; Wen Desi's situation was still relatively good, as he had seven subordinates. Some new mining area general managers were completely alone.
There was no choice; compared to the vast universe, natural persons were too few.
Wen Desi piloted a small spaceship to patrol the mining area and then returned to his office.
He looked at the clock on the wall of the hangar and said, "There are only a few days left until the Spring Festival. This year, I must go back to Earth for the New Year, even if I can't make it to Earth, at least I have to celebrate in the solar system..."
Mr. Wen was anxious because he was now the only natural person here. His seven subordinates had all taken leave to go back for the New Year that morning. Watching them board the spaceship back to Earth with high spirits, Mr. Wen felt like his heart was being clawed by a cat. However, as the general manager, he couldn't leave. The company's rules stipulated that the general managers of each mining area had to be the last to leave.
"How could those guys not consider how far away the 36th mining area is!!!" Wen Desi sat angrily at his desk, cursing the female relatives of the company's top executives.
"Mr. Wen, today's production report has been compiled. Do you need to review it..." At this moment, a clear and elegant voice sounded.
A tall and slender figure walked in.
The person was Wen Desi's bio-android secretary, named Gu Xiaolv. Gu Xiaolv was a standard beauty, especially with her long, stunning legs.
Wen Desi was in a bad mood and said casually, "Just tell me the highlights, no need to go over the usual stuff..."
"Yes, Mr. Wen. The 45th excavator needs a new drill bit... The 7th smelting workshop's converter is faulty and needs spare parts for repair... The samples from the 1164 area have been sent to the laboratory... The 662 transport vehicle was attacked by native sandworms, and the security team has been dispatched to clear them..."
"Alright, these are minor issues, you handle them... Xiaolv, I'm going back to Earth tomorrow, you..." Wen Desi waved his hand, about to assign holiday tasks.
"Boom~~~~"
Suddenly, a violent tremor interrupted him. Both Wen Desi and Gu Xiaolv were thrown to the ground.
"Damn, what's going on?" Wen Desi sprang up with a fish-like leap, his face ashen as he quickly activated the communication system.
"Woohoo~~~~" Instantly, warning alarms blared, and the computerized voice sharply announced: "...Danger... Danger... Unknown energy source approaching! Danger... Danger..."
On the monitor screen, chaos reigned outside. Dozens of buildings had their roofs torn off, and fires raged. Mining vehicles and transport ships were overturned and scattered everywhere, and the bio-android miners were fleeing in panic.
"God, what is that?" Wen Desi gasped, seeing a massive vortex in the sky. The vortex almost filled half the view, with an estimated diameter of at least five kilometers. Terrifyingly, it was still descending, and a fearsome storm was blowing out from it, sweeping across the base like a giant broom.
The main control computer's voice kept repeating: "Danger... Danger... Impact expected in 7 seconds! Prepare for impact! Prepare for impact!"
The tremor intensified, and "crack crack crack..." after a series of sparks, the indoor lights went out. The main control computer's voice also abruptly stopped.
"Boom~~~~"
Another loud explosion threw Wen Desi against the wall, and he blacked out from the impact.
"Damn, I still have to go back to Earth for the New Year..." Before losing consciousness, Wen Desi cursed.
………………………………………………………………………………
"Mr. Wen, wake up... Mr. Wen, wake up..."
After an unknown amount of time, Wen Desi vaguely heard someone shouting in his ear, sounding very anxious and shaking him vigorously. Suddenly, he smelled a pungent odor, which instantly woke him up.
"Ugh, Xiaolv..." Wen Desi opened his eyes and saw Gu Xiaolv, her face tense and tear-streaked. She was holding a spray bottle. "Damn, it's an emergency revival agent, no wonder it smells so bad..."
"That's great, Mr. Wen, you're finally awake! If you didn't wake up, I would have had to take you to the medical room..." Gu Xiaolv exclaimed happily, her mood immediately improving. "Mr. Wen, how are you feeling now? Do you need to go to the medical room for a check-up..."
"Wait, let me check myself first..." Wen Desi shook his head. He was a typical military enthusiast, having grown up playing with guns and war games. He had even gone as far as using his father's factory equipment to make guns and cannons for fun. Before his permanent assignment to the outer planet, he almost went to play war games every month and participated in various military training sessions. Although he hadn't played for two years, he still remembered the basic self-rescue and self-inspection skills.
A few minutes later, Wen Desi, confirming that he was in no serious condition, stood up from the floor.
"Phew... Xiaolv, are you okay?" Wen Desi looked at Gu Xiaolv and saw that she was luckier than him. Apart from her disheveled clothes and hair, she showed no signs of injury.
"Just a bruise on my calf..." Gu Xiaolv said. She had instinctively grabbed the handrail on the wall, which prevented her from being thrown around like a ping-pong ball.
Wen Desi looked around. The emergency lighting in the room had been restored, and the status monitoring display on the wall showed several large red lines: "...46.87% of the facility is damaged, the nuclear fusion power system is under emergency repair! Expected to be completed in 47 hours. Next plan..."
The screen also displayed a status diagram of the entire office building. Only half of it was green, indicating normal operation, while one-third was red, indicating severe damage, and the rest was orange, indicating moderate damage, with the remaining areas being yellow, indicating minor damage.
