Torsus, the great nation of the west, boasted of long history even among the countries on the Eugene continent.
This great nation possessed chivalric order, which bore the name of the founding heroic King ―― Talterette Chivalric Order, renowned as the continent’s strongest.
In a certain room in the dormitory of the above-mentioned chivalric order, a single sentence was blurted out in an unsociably voice before the female knight Villarosa, the owner of the room.
“Choose immediately. Marriage or death?”
―― This was the beginning of everything.
“…Huh?”
Due to the abruptness of the situation, Villarosa let out a voice that didn’t hide her distrust and displeasure towards the other person.
And she scowled at the man, who barged in her room and abruptly threw unsettling words at her without even a greeting.
“My apologies, I don’t quite understand what you…”
However, the man didn’t react.
He was so expressionless, it was hard to even tell if he was alive or not. He didn’t speak a word after finishing his business and kept looking down at Villarosa, not moving a muscle.
He’s just as usual, Villarosa frowned.
This was the “usual” behavior of the uninvited guest.
There were people who praised him as a composed person, who was hardly ever agitated, but in truth, he was a rude, unresponsive man.
Realizing that nothing would come out of trying to talk to this man, Villarosa immediately changed the target for her question.
“…What could this oaf be saying? Please explain in a way that I could understand.”
She directed her gaze next to the man she had just baptized as an oaf. Standing there like a guardian was the self-proclaimed best loverboy in the chivalric order, Lewis.
Lewis, well-known as the best friend of the oaf, was also looking on dumbfounded with his mouth agape. However, the moment conversation shifted towards him, he quickly hit the back of the head of the man who was standing stock still.
“Hey, Gilford! You idiot! What the hell are you saying right after barging in a woman’s room?! It was pretty much a threat, especially that last line!”
Thank god, he still seems to at least have some common sense. Villarosa felt a little relieved.
Even if he was a notorious womanizer, who was called the chivalric order’s manwhore behind his back, as long as he had more common sense than the boor next to him, talking to him would be easier.
Understanding this, Villarosa warned Lewis.
“Lewis, please take that man and immediately disappear from my sight. Otherwise, I will cut you.”
“”And this one isn’t any better…! Aghh goddamnit, why are these two so alike!”
Right after, Lewis stirred his hair, as if frustrated that his words weren’t going through.
(I’ll take my previous statement back…looks like they were two peas in a pond.)
Glancing at the irritated Louis, Villarosa quickly retracted her statement. She instantly classified him as a man, whom she also couldn’t communicate with.
Though she’d told him to leave, why was he screaming at her so desperately? Villarosa clicked her tongue at what a bad judge of character she was.
However, at this rate, they wouldn’t make progress.
In order to urge Lewis, who was being noisy all alone and Gilford, who had dissolved into air since his shocking statement at the beginning, out of her room, it was probably necessary to accept that dolt’s proposal.
(Honestly, what an annoying man…!)
Gilford, the man who didn’t even flinch at the ruckus that Lewis was making next to him and kept staring at Villarosa, had sickly pale skin and red eyes.
He was a man, who could be described as a doll…or perhaps a ghost.
Glaring at him, Villarose said with a courteous but arrogant tone.
“It will be a nuisance if you make any more fuss. There’s no helping it…I will accept the duel request from that goon…cough!..I mean, from Gilford. Therefore, all further conversations would be meaningless, so please leave quickly.”
As she glared at the two men, asking with her eyes if they were satisfied with that, for some reason, it was Lewis who was taken aback.
“Huh? A duel?! Why is this turning into a bloodier matter?! Hey Gilford, why do you look like you’ve finished all you have to say in? What the hell’s with that pointlessly posed look?! Just so you know, you haven’t managed to convey the most important thing. Your choice of words was so bad that it went over her head.”
Instead of Gilford, who was being pressed by approaching Louis, who was shouting about how the situation was bad, it was Villarosa who frowned.
“You’re noisy, Louise. What are you, a pig in heat? Please stop oinking in my room.”
“How mean!”
Villarosa pointed out that he was being noisy.
The man called Lewis indeed had an exceptionally well-proportioned face, that could only belong to a nobleman, but he was noisy to no end. Hearing him scream in a small room give Villarosa a head ache.
He might have been popular with town girls, but the reason he was shunned by noble ladies was most likely because of his personality ―― However, the fact that he himself hated nobles could have a hand in it too.
That being said, it wasn’t like tight-lipped Gilford was better. In contrast to Lewis, he was a taciturn man who spoke too little.
(…This man better not be sleeping with his eyes open.)
If Lewis was a glamorous and sociable Adonis, then the oaf, who was standing in front of Villarosa and not moving a muscle was the quiet type.
He was a cold beauty, who lacked all signs of vitality. Gilford was such a quiet man, that instead of making you think that he was asleep with his eyes open… he made you think that he was dead with his eyes open.
However, his swordsmanship was considered to be amongst one of the best in the chivalric order and only in terms of sword skills, he was even one head above Villarosa, who usually considered herself to be the best in everything. Again, it was only in terms of sword skills.
Despite this, just as she thought that he had unusually decided to talk, that was his first line after barging into other person’s room. She couldn’t help but look at him sternly subconsciously.
“Lewis Tenora, even if you don’t make such a fuss, I completely understood what Gilford wanted to say. Yes, indeed, properly, exactly…!”
“…Eh-? Don’t you look a bit…too angry for that to be true?”
Louise, who saw Villarosa shaking with anger after ruminating on the words she was told, asked awkwardly with a forced smile plastered on his face.
Villarosa glared at the two men who displeased her with increasingly sharp eyes, expressing her vexation.
“What? How can I not get angry at this? Did you think that I was that kind of well-rounded person? Or perhaps…are you belittling me, thinking that there’s no way I would get angry?…”
Lewis shook his head so hard that it looked like it would tear off.
“No! I’m not expecting much from your humanness!”
“Oh, I see. Very well. In that case, as expected ―― you have been belittling me…!”
“No, no! That’s not the case! Sorry, probably, no, definitely, absolutely nothing has been conveyed! Rather than the idea not being conveyed , things have taken the worst possible turn! Gilford, don’t just stay silent, say something!”
Ignoring Lewis, who was shaking the shoulders of the root of all evil that stood stock still, Villarosa talked indifferently.
“Female knights are rare. That’s why I’ve been told many degrading things because of my gender. As a result of resolutely swinging my sword in response to those voices, I have managed to become one of the 5 strongest knights in the Talterette chivalric order.”
“U-umm…are you…boasting?”
“Yes, I’m boasting.”
Villarosa talked with her eyes fixed on people in front of her and picked up her beloved sword.
“However, those inflexible old goats even now keep telling me that as a mere woman, I should quickly get married and devote myself to a man…”
She had heard numerous words that belittled female knights from those old geezers with archaic mindset. Even just remembering them filled her with irritation.
To think that this man would be the same…A mix of disappointment and anger whirled inside Villarosa.
“…I didn’t expect that I would be told by the same thing by the man who seemed the least likely to say it. Marriage or death, huh…that’s quite a remark, isn’t it, Gilford? To say that women should just obey men or die.”
Even when Villarosa glared at him full of killing intent, Gilford still didn’t even twitch. Rather, it was Lewis who seemed more flustered.
“Calm down, Villarosa! Gilford didn’t mean to insult you by any means…!”
“The instigator should shut up, Louise Tenora…I also hate complicated things…Gilford, we’re rivals who always get compared to each other…You didn’t seem to care, but I was always unwilling to accept it…”
Villarosa pulled her sword out of its sheath.
“I will prove that I’m the strongest right now, right here…!”
“Don’t prove something like that!”
Without a moment’s delay, Lewis got between the two.
“Calm down! Just calm down!”
In order to obstruct Villarosa’s view, Lewis inserted himself between her and Gilford.
Villarosa, whose start was spoiled, clicked her tongue, as if asking if he was still going to interfere.
“..Tsk…! …What is it, Louise?”
“You just clicked your tongue! You were definitely all raring to go at it, weren’t you?!”
“Of course. If you hadn’t gotten in my way, I would be able to cut the head of this nuisance of a man who’s oppressing the room even just by standing still absent-mindedly and wasting the air, in one slash.”
“…”
Lewis, who heard Villarosa’s displeased tone, looked as if he had eaten something sour, and turned towards his best friend, whose head was being targeted.
“…Hey Gilford, just what of this headhunting demon do you like?”
Gilford, who was being poked, took off his eyes, which had been fixed on Villarosa ever since the start, from her and blinked. It was almost like a gesture of a child, who had just woken up from a dream.
However, leaving Lewis’ question unanswered, he sluggishly reached for his sword that hung from his waist, and…
“Choose. Marriage or death?”
Unhesitatingly thrust the unsheased point of the blade towards Villarosa.
