In the scorching heat of midsummer, paired with a weekend holiday, and with a fan blowing cool air, who could resist the temptation of a lazy morning in bed?
The clock struck eleven, its chimes echoing from the old, creaking wall clock, urging the high school student, Yi Ersan, to get out of bed.
However, the chimes were no match for the allure of sleep. Yi Ersan turned over in bed, pulled the blanket over his head, and planned to catch a few more winks.
"Business is getting harder and harder... Xiao Liuzi, are you still sleeping? You should go to the hospital for a follow-up, and also visit the forest in the eastern suburbs."
As the hoarse voice called out, the old security door groaned and creaked, allowing the person outside to enter.
"Let me sleep a bit more... Ouch!"
Yi Ersan pulled the blanket tighter around himself, but suddenly felt something extremely cold slip into the blanket, shocking him awake and causing him to jump out of bed. The chill that had enveloped him was instantly dispelled by the icy object.
"Another popsicle, how unoriginal." Yi Ersan pouted, staring at the popsicle that had been thrown into the blanket. He glared at his father, Yi Benshu, in dissatisfaction, then peeled off the wrapper and put the popsicle in his mouth to regain his senses.
"What else should I put in there? A girl? A young lady?" The forty-something Yi Benshu took off his sweat-soaked robe and went to the fan to enjoy the cool air. "Do you have a girlfriend? You're just a pitiful single dog. When I was your age..."
"You were already a heartthrob, I know, I know." Yi Ersan put on his slippers and rushed to the bathroom, not wanting to hear his father's lies.
"Remember to go to the hospital after you wash up." Yi Benshu took out a yellow paper talisman from his pocket, which was soaked with sweat, and complained while blowing it at the fan: "Sigh... I miss the last couple of years! Business is getting harder and harder..."
The last couple of years? Yi Ersan sat on the toilet, shaking his head and sighing. It should be the last three years, right?
Three years ago, Earth lost its only natural satellite, the moon.
The moon, which had hung high in the sky for thousands of years, like a bee circling a flower, suddenly seemed to grow tired of its eternal orbit and decided to crash into Earth.
Yes! Three years ago, a quarter of the moon fell into the Pacific Ocean, leaving a gaping hole in the sky, as if a piece of cake had been cut out.
What would happen if the moon fell into the Pacific Ocean? Many scientists had long predicted that the impact would cause massive explosions, tectonic shifts, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis, leading to disasters worse than the extinction of the dinosaurs.
However, when the moon fell into the Pacific Ocean, it seemed to have made a gentle, soft landing. There were no tsunamis, no tectonic shifts, no volcanic eruptions, and not even a ripple in the Pacific Ocean, despite the massive chunk of rock that had fallen into it.
The only unusual thing that happened when the moon fell to Earth was that a thick fog enveloped the entire planet for three days, so dense that you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. When people began to panic, the fog suddenly disappeared overnight.
After that, naval ships from various countries sailed to the vicinity of the moon, and scientists from around the world, while proclaiming it a treasure for all humanity, began to conduct research on this mysterious land.
Time flew by, and in the blink of an eye, it had been three years since the moon arrived on Earth. People had moved from initial panic and curiosity to complete adaptation.
The Pacific Ocean had simply gained a moon, and people were more concerned with whether they could eat, dress well, and live comfortably.
Without attention, the amateur scientists who had gained fame by talking about the moon's arrival on Earth lost their chance to appear on TV and the internet. They could only make a little money by posting short videos and public accounts, or by dressing in robes and pretending to be mystics to scam people.
For example: "Sir, I see a dark cloud on your forehead, indicating recent misfortune. Don't worry, I recently ventured into the moon, which is sealed off by governments, and found the Palace of the Moon Goddess, where I was granted this talisman by the Moon Goddess herself!"
"Am I lying? The government says there's nothing on the moon? Then why don't they open it for everyone to visit? Isn't the moon a gift to all humanity? I was invited by the government to investigate and signed a confidentiality agreement! If not for your dire situation, I wouldn't reveal the truth."
"Hello, this is the Chiyangzi Daochang..." Yi Benshu's enthusiastic voice interrupted Yi Ersan's thoughts. "Ms. Wang, I foresaw that you would call at this time. Do you feel something unclean at home? Don't worry! I will come immediately..."
Yi Benshu quickly put on his dried robe, packed his tools into a backpack, and, holding his "Iron Mouth Directly Cuts" sign, left the house, not forgetting to shout to Yi Ersan, who was still in the bathroom: "Remember to go to the hospital for a follow-up, and visit the forest in the eastern suburbs tonight."
A fat sheep? Yi Ersan pulled up his pants and walked out of the room, looking at the steaming bowl of noodles on the table. He shook his head and muttered to himself: "Don't let this be like the last few times, where we ran into someone who had been scammed before and ended up getting beaten."
Yi Benshu was a con artist. Since Yi Ersan could remember, his father had always relied on scams to support them. Sometimes, when luck was on their side, they would encounter a wealthy victim, and the two of them could live comfortably for a few days. But when luck was against them, they would face the wrath of those they had scammed.
The scene was indescribable, with several large women, who didn't care about the damage to their expensive manicures, pulling and tugging at the two of them until their clothes were reduced to rags.
A knock on the door interrupted Yi Ersan's thoughts. He opened the door to find two men dressed in black suits and wearing dark sunglasses, with perfect physiques, resembling the Men in Black from the movies.
Yi Ersan warily examined the two expressionless men, wondering not only if they were hot in their summer attire but also what their purpose was.
Had they been scammed by his father and come to seek revenge? Or had they been scammed and come to seek his father's help?
"Is this the home of the true Chiyangzi? We are the Liang family, as previously arranged."
The taller of the two men, who was about 1.9 meters tall, suddenly spoke.
Yi Ersan quickly determined that these two had just been scammed by his father and were still unaware of his true identity. Otherwise, they wouldn't have called him "Chiyangzi," but would have shouted in anger, "Where is that old fraud, Chiyangzi?"
A fat sheep! A big, fat sheep!
This was Yi Ersan's second judgment. His father, a seasoned con artist, rarely revealed his address to anyone. He only did so when the victim was valuable enough, and then he would quickly move after the scam was completed.
