Chapter 15, Accounting
"Most of our Luo Fu Province's first batch of pager users are in the news and public security industries. It hasn't yet become popular among the wealthy merchants and the general public. There's a lot of potential here," Yang Zixuan said with a smile. Even An Zai's pager was obtained through a friend in the public security bureau of a neighboring province, and only a few high-ranking officials in the bureau had such a high-end gadget.
"Right now, we'll go to the neighboring Nan Su Province to get the pagers from a tiered distributor. We'll start by reselling them. After the New Year, I'll take you to Lingnan's Gangzhou and Suzhou to meet with Motorola's domestic general distributor. We'll get the goods from the general distributor and then distribute them within the province."
Nan Su and Jiangnan, which border Luo Fu, are major coastal economic provinces where pagers have already become popular in developed areas. Motorola already has regional distributors there.
Yang Zixuan looked at Su Chen's delicate eyebrows and the slight bulge of her chest in her cute white cotton jacket, which made her look plump and full of youthful energy.
"However, I have to work in the county government and can't always be with you. But I don't feel comfortable leaving you alone, so I'll get you a helper first," Yang Zixuan said, sipping his sugared water.
"I'm not that young," Su Chen pouted, "I'm almost twenty."
Yang Zixuan leered at Su Chen's chest, nodded, and smiled, "Yeah, you're definitely not that young."
Seeing Yang Zixuan's gaze, Su Chen's face turned red, and she scolded, "I'm not talking to you! You're already a county magistrate, and you still act so improperly!"
Cao Mei was feeling a bit irritable lately. Watching the black-and-white TV drama on the screen made her even more upset.
After the Red Textile Factory manager was placed under double regulation and the legal process began, she testified in court at Yang Zixuan's request, which was considered a form of atonement. She was released after a few days of interrogation.
After being released, she was fired from the Red Textile Factory. She searched for a job for a few days but found none. After all, Hongshui County was a small place, and even the tiniest news could spread throughout the county. Most people had heard about Cao Mei testifying against her boss. No company would dare hire someone like her.
So she called the young county magistrate's house, but no one answered.
"These officials are all the same. They use all sorts of threats when they need you, but once they're done, they throw you away like trash," Cao Mei grumbled, turning off the TV, feeling a deep sense of injustice.
"Mom, I wanted to watch it. Why did you turn it off..." A little girl's soft voice came from behind Cao Mei.
The little girl, about eight or nine years old, looked like a porcelain doll with two small pigtails.
"Yao'er, stop watching and go do your homework..."
"No, I want to watch..." Yao'er snuggled into Cao Mei's arms, pouting.
Just as Cao Mei was about to say something, there was a knock on the door.
Cao Mei put Yao'er on a chair and opened the door to see the man she hated, Yang Zixuan, and a beautiful young girl behind him...
"County Magistrate Yang, what brings you here? Please come in..." Although Cao Mei had cursed Yang Zixuan more than ten times in her heart, she still put on a smile.
Yang Zixuan, holding Su Chen's warm, smooth hand, walked in. He glanced around the room, which was quite simple, with only a few pieces of furniture and old, worn chairs. It was clear that Cao Mei, a single mother, had a hard time raising a child...
"What a beautiful child."
Su Chen, seeing Yao'er sitting formally on the chair with big, beautiful eyes, couldn't resist reaching out to hug her.
"Yao'er, call Uncle Yang and this Yang Sister," Cao Mei said, not knowing who Su Chen was or her relationship with Yang Zixuan, but guessing she was his girlfriend from the way he held her hand.
Although they had worked together at the Red Textile Factory, they were in different departments, and Cao Mei hadn't paid much attention to Su Chen. However, Su Chen had seen Cao Mei a few times and remembered her.
"This is Su Ming's sister, Su Chen," Yang Zixuan introduced.
"Oh, so you're Factory Manager Su's sister. You're so beautiful. Please sit down, I'll get you some water."
Yao'er, who rarely saw strangers at home, looked at Su Chen and Yang Zixuan with curious eyes.
After taking a sip of tea, Yang Zixuan looked at the somewhat nervous Cao Mei and said, "You haven't found a job yet, right?"
"Yes, I've applied to a few places, but none of them hired me," Cao Mei said, looking embarrassed.
"You've helped me a lot. How about this: you come work for me, and I'll give you a monthly salary of 500 yuan," Yang Zixuan said, putting down his teacup.
"500 yuan?" Cao Mei couldn't help but exclaim. Even in Daming City, few public servants earned 500 yuan a month. In Hongshui County, 500 yuan a month was a very high income.
"Yes, are you willing? If not, I can help you get a job at a public institution."
"Willing! Willing!" Cao Mei nodded eagerly. Although a public institution was a stable job, it didn't offer such a high salary. As an accountant, she knew the value of this offer. "But may I ask, what exactly do you want me to do?"
"It's not really for me, but for her," Yang Zixuan pointed to Su Chen. "She's planning to open a store in Zijin to sell pagers. You can help manage the store and handle the accounts. You'll get your salary from her."
"Pagers?" Cao Mei was surprised again. She had seen those box-sized devices during her testimony in Daming City, where several high-ranking officials had them attached to their belts, making "beep" sounds.
"What's the matter? Are you willing?" Yang Zixuan asked calmly.
"Willing! But..." Cao Mei looked at Yao'er hesitantly. "If I go to the provincial capital, what about Yao'er? Maybe I should just stay in Hongshui, and you can help me get a job at a public institution. I won't starve."
"Yao'er can go with you," Yang Zixuan said calmly. "She can study in the provincial capital, where the education is much better than in Hongshui. As for the household registration, I'll find a way to help you."
"Thank you, County Magistrate Yang!" Cao Mei was overwhelmed with gratitude. In those days, the household registration system was much stricter than it is now.
Cao Mei, from a rural background, had always dreamed of becoming a city resident. After her divorce, as a single mother, she had given up on that dream and instead focused her hopes on her daughter, hoping for a better future for her. Now, this man was giving her that opportunity, and more importantly, her daughter would also become a city resident, no longer having to endure the disdain of her brothers.
