Everything she wanted

Since her speaking coach had brought up the excitement of young love that day, Shen Wanying had begun thinking about dating Huo Cheng.

She had been actively seeking out excitement in a bid to release the stress she usually felt, and secretly dating Huo Cheng seemed like it would be much more exhilarating than dressing up like a party girl to sing at karaoke.

No, she had no serious intention of dating young, not at all.

It was a new week, and Sports Day was in full swing. Shen Wanying was involved in four events: three running events, and the high jump. Coincidentally, Qiu Ziqing was participating in the same events.

Before the 100-metre dash, both of them were on the track, warming up. Beside Shen Wanying, Zhao Yimeng cheered, a toy megaphone in hand: “Go, Lady Shen!”

Shen Wanying turned to look at her and smiled, waving in return.

Wang Tingting refused to be outdone. “Come on, Qiu Ziqing!” She cheered.

Zhao Yimeng looked at Wang Tingting and grimaced. “What kind of copycat is Qiu Ziqing? She already imitates the way Lady Shen talks and acts, does she also have to sign up for the same things as her?”

Wang Tingting sniffed disdainfully. “You’re such a busybody, are you the Pacific Police? Anyone is free to sign up for any event. You can sign up yourself if you don’t believe me.”

In the time they were arguing, the runners had taken up their positions. The referee fired the gun, and they all shot off like arrows from a bow. Right from the start, Shen Wanying led the pack, followed by Qiu Ziqing.

Qiu Ziqing accelerated as much as she could in the second half of the race, trying to overtake Shen Wanying, but her opponent also sprinted harder.

The 100-meter dash lasted just over ten seconds. Qiu Ziqing was unable to overtake Shen Wanying before she crossed the finish line.

Zhao Yimeng, seeing that her friend was victorious, ran up to her and gave her shoulder a squeeze. “Well done! Huo Cheng also got first place on the men’s team, a perfect match!”

Shen Wanying didn’t know what to say to that.

Qiu Ziqing stood a short distance away, a little breathless. Wang Tingting tried to comfort her, but she paid no heed, staring at Shen Wanying with a look of dissatisfaction on her face.

Qiu Ziqing not only lost the 100-meter dash, but also the high jump later that day. Apart from the relay, which was a team event, her only remaining chance for a gold was the 3000-metre run. This event did not play to her strengths; the distance was too great for her. But there hadn’t been enough girls in her class who signed up for it, and she knew that Shen Wanying would be competing.

Shen Wanying had run in the 3000-metre race the previous Sports Day and accidentally won first place.

Zhao Yimeng wanted to run a lap with Shen Wanying, but was shooed away by the referee when she approached the track. Meanwhile, Huo Cheng stood at the edge of the grandstand, eyes fixed on Shen Wanying.

The MC on the podium read cheers from each class to encourage the competitors as they ran. The 3000-metre run was the longest of the Sports Day events, and the students had written many encouragements for their classmates.

The final lap of the race.

Qiu Ziqing had trained for this. She had been running every day before this Sports Day, and her stamina was better than it had ever been. Now, she could speed up in the final lap, which she did. However, she hadn’t expected that Shen Wanying, who she had been ahead of for most of the race, would also have the stamina to accelerate at this point. Seeing herself being overtaken, Qiu Ziqing was instantly anxious.

She matched Shen Wanying’s pace, but she was already at her limit, her head began to spin.

As Shen Wanying approached the finish line, she heard a commotion in the stands. Confused, she looked back.

Qiu Ziqing had suddenly collapsed on the track.

The students of Class 2 quickly gathered around her, and a teacher carried her away, presumably to the infirmary.

“Don’t get distracted, don’t lose your pace.” Huo Cheng had walked to the edge of the track and called to Shen Wanying, who nodded at him, determined to finish the race.

He was waiting for her at the finish line when she crossed. Taking her hand, he asked, “How are you?”

“I’m alright.” She was breathing hard, and looked a little tired.

He supported her as she walked slowly around the track to cool down. “School work in high school is intense, so you don’t have much time to exercise,” He told her. “At university, get up every day for a morning run. Soon, this distance will be nothing.”

“That…” Shen Wanying steadied her breathing and looked like she was doing better. “I’ve actually been running these days, but I still don’t get enough exercise.”

“Take it slow.”

“Mm.” She nodded. She took a sip of the water that he had given her and smiled at him. “I’m feeling a lot better. What happened to Qiu Ziqing?”

“She suddenly collapsed during the final sprint. The teacher sent her to the infirmary, but she shouldn’t have any serious injuries.”

Shen Wanying mulled it over. “I think I’ll go to the infirmary to see her.”

Huo Cheng was silent for a moment. “I’ll go with you.”

“Okay.”

T/N: Once again, thank you to Bright Eyes for her help on this chapter too!! Honestly, after knowing what her mom is like, I can’t bring myself to have too much vitriol @ Qiu Ziqing. Like, she’s pitted against SWY all the time at home, so of course she’d be extra competitive. I just think it must be so miserable to be her ^^; not me sitting here trying to be understandable to a fictional character LOL. I hope you enjoyed this one! See you in the next chapter (:
