Chapter 3

7 min read1,715 words

Jiang Ping was surprised to find that the foreheads of Zhao Wanqing and her family of three were glowing with different colors. Zhao Wanqing's forehead glowed a blood-red color, while her daughter, though also red, was much lighter, almost imperceptible. As for Zhao Wanqing's husband, his forehead glowed a deep black, the first time Jiang Ping had seen such pure black, as if it were absorbing light like a black hole, giving off a sense of deathly stillness.

The sudden anomaly startled Jiang Ping. He quickly closed his eyes tightly and then looked across the street again. However, the anomaly had vanished without a trace, and Zhao Wanqing's family appeared completely normal, no different from ordinary people.

If it were someone else, they might have thought the anomaly was just a momentary illusion, but Jiang Ping didn't think so. He was always very confident in his eyesight, and the light he saw was so real that he was sure he hadn't been mistaken.

This sudden change left Jiang Ping puzzled, and he couldn't help but think to himself, "What's the deal with this strange light? Is it a side effect of my rebirth, or is there another reason?"

While Jiang Ping was distracted by the anomaly, a white BMW came speeding from the other end of the intersection. For some reason, the driver ignored the obvious red light and sped through the intersection, heading straight for Zhao Wanqing's family who were crossing the street.

The sound of the car snapped Jiang Ping back to reality. He shouted a warning to Zhao Wanqing's family, "Be careful!" and without hesitation, rushed towards them.

Zhao Wanqing and her husband, preoccupied with their own thoughts, were also somewhat distracted while crossing the street. Only after hearing Jiang Ping's warning did they notice the BMW running the red light. However, the speeding car was already too close, and the family of three, frozen in fear, had no time to dodge.

At this critical moment, Jiang Ping arrived. He pushed Zhao Wanqing away with all his strength, then scooped up the frightened little girl, narrowly avoiding the BMW that was almost upon them.

Jiang Ping, a mere high school senior, lost his balance after barely saving the two and fell heavily to the ground. Even as he fell, he held the little girl tightly to protect her from injury.

However, his momentary distraction had cost Jiang Ping precious seconds, and he was too late to save the little girl's father. As Jiang Ping fell to the ground with the little girl, there was a dull thud. The BMW hit Zhao Wanqing's husband hard, sending him flying a considerable distance.

The driver of the BMW finally reacted, slamming on the brakes. The tires screeched, leaving long skid marks on the road, and the car finally came to a stop about thirty meters away.

Jiang Ping, who had fallen to the ground, quickly stood up, feeling a burning pain in his shoulder, clearly injured from the fall. He quickly checked the little girl in his arms and found that she had only a few minor scratches on her arm. He breathed a sigh of relief.

The little girl was clearly terrified, her big, watery eyes fixed on Jiang Ping, ready to burst into tears at any moment. However, Jiang Ping didn't have time to comfort her. He gave her a gentle smile and then carried her over to check on Zhao Wanqing and her husband.

Zhao Wanqing's condition was not good. Although Jiang Ping's push had saved her from a direct hit, her clothes had been caught by the BMW, dragging her along the ground for a considerable distance. Her back and face were severely scraped and bleeding, a frightening sight.

Fortunately, Zhao Wanqing was still conscious. Seeing Jiang Ping with the little girl, she immediately became anxious, "Jiajia, are you okay? Let Mom see!"

Zhao Wanqing's face was covered in blood, which initially frightened the little girl. However, her attachment to her mother made her break free from Jiang Ping's embrace and go to her mother's side, softly saying, "Jiajia is fine, Mom, are you hurt?"

Seeing that her daughter was unharmed, Zhao Wanqing relaxed, but the pain from her injuries soon hit her like a wave, causing her to frown. Despite this, she managed to thank Jiang Ping, "Thank you for saving us."

With Zhao Wanqing's words, Jiang Ping secretly breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that his risk had not been in vain.

However, Jiang Ping didn't show this thought and immediately said, "Do you have a phone? I need to call the police."

If it were in his previous life, Jiang Ping would have called the police long ago. But it was 2002, and mobile phones were not yet widely available. As a high school student, Jiang Ping naturally didn't have one, so he could only rely on Zhao Wanqing.

Zhao Wanqing didn't disappoint, pointing to her purse nearby, "The phone is in the bag."

Jiang Ping nodded, leaving the little girl with her mother, and went to get the phone to call the police. After making the call, Jiang Ping went to check on Zhao Wanqing's husband. At first glance, Jiang Ping's heart sank; the situation was dire.

Zhao Wanqing's husband was unconscious, with a large pool of blood around his head, all of which had come from his mouth. Jiang Ping noticed many red blood clots in the blood, a sign of severe internal injuries. Based on his past experience, the chances of survival after such severe injuries were slim.

Seeing the man on the brink of death, Jiang Ping couldn't help but shake his head. According to his original plan, everything should have ended well. However, the strange light on Zhao Wanqing's family's foreheads had distracted him, and this brief delay had drastically changed the outcome.

This made Jiang Ping realize that even as a reborn person, he couldn't completely control his own or others' fates. The most he could do was his best to steer events in the direction he hoped. As for the final outcome, it was up to fate.

However, Jiang Ping was still satisfied with the result of his冒险. Although he was slightly injured, he had saved Zhao Wanqing and her daughter, which was enough to establish a connection with Zhao Guoquan.

More importantly, in his previous life, all three victims of the car accident had died, and there were no other witnesses, which had objectively created favorable conditions for his father to take the blame. This time, Zhao Wanqing and her daughter were not in mortal danger, and with Jiang Ping present, the perpetrator would find it much harder to find someone to take the blame.

Thinking of the perpetrator, Jiang Ping's attention turned to the white BMW. Although he had never met the perpetrator, Jiang Ping knew his identity. After his father was released from prison, he had told Jiang Ping who he had taken the blame for, and that person was Qian Jing, the son of Qian Yongchang, the boss of Yongchang Group, one of the most famous rich second-generation in the city.

For some reason, whether out of shock or something else, Qian Jing had remained in the car from the moment of the accident. He had no intention of fleeing or checking on the victims. This puzzled Jiang Ping, but since the police and ambulance hadn't arrived yet, he decided to investigate.

Jiang Ping approached the BMW and peered through the window, seeing a person slumped over the steering wheel, motionless. Jiang Ping pulled open the car door and immediately heard loud snoring, followed by a strong smell of alcohol. It turned out that Qian Jing had been driving under the influence and had fallen asleep after the accident!

Thinking of Zhao Wanqing's severe injuries and her husband's uncertain fate, while Qian Jing was still snoring in the car, Jiang Ping was filled with righteous anger. He grabbed Qian Jing by the collar and dragged him out.

Qian Jing, still half-asleep, shouted, "Who, who the hell woke me up?"

Jiang Ping, still holding Qian Jing by the collar, said coldly, "You've caused trouble, you hit someone!"

"Hitting... hitting someone, what's the big deal?" Qian Jing, clearly not fully awake, slurred, "I have money, I'll pay thirty thousand for each one, no... problem!"

Even though Jiang Ping was nearly middle-aged in his mental age, he was still outraged by Qian Jing's inhumane words. He slapped Qian Jing hard, gritting his teeth and whispering, "The person you hit is almost dead, his wife and child are right there, are you even human?!"

The two slaps seemed to wake Qian Jing up a bit, and his face turned pale. Jiang Ping didn't bother to argue with him, pushing him aside and quickly going to comfort Zhao Wanqing, who was lying on the ground, "The ambulance will be here soon, just hold on a little longer!"

Although Zhao Wanqing had severe abrasions, she remained conscious and knew that if it weren't for Jiang Ping, her family of three might have all been in danger. Despite her weakness, she managed to nod in gratitude.

Qian Jing, slightly more sober, sat in the car, looking at the bloodied Zhao Wanqing and the man lying further away, whose fate was unknown. He realized the situation was serious. Drunk driving and causing a traffic accident could land him in jail. The more he thought about it, the more afraid he became, and an idea formed in his mind.

Once the idea took hold, it couldn't be suppressed. Qian Jing hesitated for a moment, then started the engine, shifted into gear, and made a 180-degree turn, quickly disappearing into the traffic. Knowing he wouldn't get away with it once the police arrived, he chose to flee after the accident.

Actually, when Qian Jing started the car, Jiang Ping had already guessed what he was going to do. However, Jiang Ping didn't want to risk his life to stop the crazy Qian Jing, so he could only curse under his breath, "This bastard, he actually ran away!"
