Chapter 84

5 min read1,271 words

The sapling of the World Tree has been planted, just forty kilometers south of the World Tree, right outside its canopy, where it won’t be overshadowed by the World Tree but still within its protective reach.

On a fertile plot of land cleared of all plants and weeds, the sapling stood alone.

When they first brought it back, Kailandiel was heartbroken: “How can such a small pot be used? Is that gnome trying to abuse our little sapling!”

They quickly transplanted it into soil that had been carefully adjusted for fertility, moisture, and looseness.

However, after a day and a night, the sapling’s condition did not improve.

Normally, after transplanting, a plant would adapt to its new environment and its condition would improve. This sapling, which had been kept in a box at the general store, was somewhat withered, but even after a day and a night in its new home, it remained in the same withered state.

This was troubling, indicating that the sapling was not adapting to its new environment.

“What’s wrong? Did we water it too much? Why is the sapling in such poor condition?” Gerard, who had not left the sapling’s side for a moment, asked. Even the duties of the queen were less important to her than the sapling of the World Tree.

Gerard had personally prepared this plot of land. She took off her elegant elven boots, rolled up her pants, tied up her long hair, put on a straw hat, and cleared the weeds, loosened the soil, mixed in humus, watered, and removed pests, all by herself.

She found Kailandiel, the High Priestess, too weak to do the work quickly.

But despite all her efforts, the sapling’s condition did not improve, which worried her and the surrounding elven elders.

“No, the moisture is just right, in harmony with the Life God. The roots are undamaged, and the soil is very fertile. This place is the natural environment for the Life God, with consistent temperature, humidity, and sunlight,” Kailandiel explained.

“Then what’s the problem? Have you asked the Life God?” Gerard asked.

“I have, but the Life God did not respond to me,” Kailandiel said worriedly. “The Life God responds to me less and less. I don’t know if it’s due to its illness or lack of energy.”

“What can we do? The God of Nature never taught us how to plant the World Tree,” Gerard said, sitting down on the ground without any grace, far from the dignified queen she was supposed to be.

Kailandiel also sat down beside her: “What’s so strange? You know how elves have children, but do you know how they form in the womb? These are natural laws. The Life God said it cannot touch the most natural laws, so it probably doesn’t know how to grow the World Tree either.”

“What can we do? Should we call a druid?” Gerard asked, troubled.

Kailandiel glanced at her, reminding her: “Oh, I forgot you are the most powerful druid of the elven race.” Concern can make one forget.

“Should we try magic? To stimulate it?” Kailandiel asked softly.

Druids have many spells for planting, herding, and stimulating growth. They are the masters of nature. However, the World Tree sapling is too important, and no one dares to use magic on it lightly. If it withers, they will become sinners to the entire elven race.

Moreover, it might not even work. If the growth spell were effective, the seed would have sprouted long ago.

Gerard hesitated, unable to make a decision. The World Tree sapling is too important, especially with the old World Tree dying and only one new sapling. Any decision involving it must be made with great caution.

“Sigh, if only we had more saplings,” Gerard sighed.

“Report... Your Majesty.” An elven guard reported from a distance, as the area around the sapling was declared off-limits, and even the elven elders could only gather outside.

A servant ran over to listen to the report and was shocked halfway through: “What? Really?”

If it could shock her own guards, it must be important. But what could be more important than the World Tree sapling? Gerard, annoyed, called out from a distance: “What is it? Report directly.”

“Your Majesty, the new teleportation array for the Life Tree branch has received a message asking if we want a World Tree sapling, g-guaranteed to be alive.”

“Nonsense!” A male elven elder scolded: “Is the World Tree sapling a cabbage? Anyone can claim to have one. This is clearly a spam message. Just turn it off. Your Majesty has many important matters to attend to, why waste time on spam messages!”

The surrounding people smiled strangely, and Kailandiel winked at Gerard, who rolled her eyes in exasperation.

The unmarried Queen Gerard is coveted not only by humans but also by elves. Her suitors could line up from the World Tree to the Greenleaf City, and this 400-year-old elven elder is one of the most enthusiastic, always trying to show off.

The elven guard responded: “But the other side sent a good World Tree branch.”

“What!?” Gerard and Kailandiel, who had been indifferent a moment ago, both jumped up.

When the two arrived at the teleportation array, they heard a cheeky voice from a distance:

“Are you an elf sister? I love chatting with elf sisters, you know? I had to fight hard for this chance to chat with you. My ancestors were the best friends of elves. What am I? You guess.”

Gerard’s forehead was full of black lines. Who is this cheeky thing?

Not just Gerard, but Nigris and Luther also had black lines on their faces. This dead horse had boasted that it was very familiar with the elves, so they entrusted the communication task to it, given the well-known relationship between unicorns and elves.

But it turned out that this guy was not trying to communicate but to flirt. When they told it to go away, it defiantly retorted:

“I am a poor unicorn. I was abandoned as a child and never received the care of an elf sister. What’s wrong with letting me chat a bit? Do you want me to steal your beetroot at night!” The unicorn’s boldness grew with its horn.

Luther, hearing the threat, immediately cowered. Without Luther, Nigris couldn’t handle this dead horse, so he could only scold: “You being abandoned is not pitiful, it’s your own fault.”

Gerard took over the communication and asked directly: “You say you have a World Tree sapling? Is it true?”

Lightning and Nigris both perked up. A new person? The real one?

“Who are you? Can you make the decision?” Lightning asked.

“I am the elven queen, Gerardia. Who are you?”

Lightning’s eyes showed a hint of fear, and it shrank back, sliding down from the teleportation array.

“What’s wrong?” Nigris was surprised.

Lightning, who had grown bolder, now feared no one except Ang and the angelic skeleton zombie. Knowing Luther’s weakness, it often threatened the Sword Saint with stolen beetroots. It shrank back at the mere mention of this name. Who is she?

“Gerardia, the Dragon Hunter, the new elven queen, a very terrifying woman.” Lightning said and quickly fled the cave.

“Dragon Hunter? That’s like a dragon slayer in human terms? So powerful? Wait, Dragon Hunter? Kebada, kill my dragon! Damn it, I’ll chew up all the World Tree saplings and send them to her!”
