Chapter 42

Originally, the Worm King pushed open the earthen slope from underground, its head raised high like a cobra ready to attack. Its enormous suction-cup mouth was more than three meters above the ground. When the unexpected BOSS team fled, the Worm King paused for a moment, as if sensing something. Then, with a swoosh, it chased after the players who were running away.

The landmines the players had set up earlier all exploded on the earthen slope, but they did not cause much damage to the Worm King. The Worm King's pursuit seemed to be for some other reason.

The earthen slope was clearly not naturally formed. It was likely that the Worm King, like other earthworms, had spit out long, slimy strands after eating, which gradually accumulated to form such a large slope. The Worm King had been resting underground for an unknown period, and the slope, formed by the spewed slime, had even grown grass on top.

The Worm King's body extended more than ten meters. Unlike snakes, which gradually taper from head to tail, the Worm King's body was uniformly thick from head to toe, with no distinction. However, when moving forward, it wriggled like a snake, undulating its body.

This method of movement seemed to require a lot of effort and should have been slow. But the wet ground, along with the wet grass, seemed to provide a layer of lubricant for the Worm King. The Worm King moved very quickly, instantly catching up to a male player who was running away.

The Worm King's large, suction-cup-like mouth, which contained small, sharp teeth, bit into the male player's head. The male player's body trembled, and then his head disappeared. The weapons in his gun space and the materials in his backpack exploded, and the headless corpse turned into a wisp of white light and vanished.

After biting off the player's head, the Worm King wriggled its body, as if swallowing the head. Then it paused again, as if sensing something, before charging towards another player.

"What's that sound?" Not far away, a player with almond eyes, who had been lying on the ground lazily, suddenly perked up as he prepared to start his unwanted work.

"The sound of anti-personnel mines exploding. Someone must be killing monsters over there," the Cleaner said. He had heard the explosions from the first mine. However, the Cleaner was not there, as this area was not his territory, and it was normal for other players to kill monsters.

After the Worm King pushed open the earthen slope, the mines exploded one after another. The Cleaner thought it was just the result of players attracting monsters to step on the mines. However, the commotion caught the attention of the player with almond eyes, so the Cleaner, who already knew what was happening, casually gave an answer and prepared to lure the monsters.

"No, I mean what is that thing?" The player with almond eyes pointed to the distance, his face filled with shock.

"Hmm?" The Cleaner was taken aback, raised his sniper rifle, and looked through the scope. He quickly found the Worm King and saw it just as it bit off the male player's head.

"BOSS, let's go. Looks like we have good luck this time. A team must have found the Worm King somehow. But they don't seem to have much fighting power and are now being chased by the Worm King. We can go and pick up the leftovers."

Through the scope, the Cleaner could see the scene clearly, even the terrified expressions of the players as they fled. This made him think of taking the BOSS, as the other team's elimination was just a matter of time. Once they were all dead, the Cleaner killing the BOSS wouldn't be considered stealing. It was normal to steal a BOSS in the wild, especially when picking up the leftovers. Neither the Cleaner nor the player with almond eyes would feel any guilt.

The wet grass provided a good environment for the Worm King, so despite pausing after each kill to determine the direction of the next target, it quickly eliminated three out of five players, leaving only two female players screaming as they fled.

"Jingjing, you run first." A female player, who seemed to have a habit of pushing her glasses up her nose, pushed her companion and, gritting her teeth, fired at the approaching Worm King before running in another direction.

"No... come back." The pushed female player was stunned, her voice trembling and tearful. The sudden situation made her forget that this was just a game and that death was reversible.

"Don't come back, run!" Seeing her companion trying to come back, the female player who was attacking the Worm King shouted. The other female player hesitated, tears streaming down her face, before turning and running away.

Less than five seconds later, the gunfire stopped. The crying female player, too afraid to look back, ran away, her heart heavy with sorrow. The sound of the Worm King's body rubbing against the ground followed her.

When the rubbing sound paused briefly, as if a massive creature was lifting from behind her, causing a whistling sound in the air, the female player clenched her teeth and closed her eyes, accepting her fate.

Swoosh... The Worm King's gaping, grotesque mouth descended. The foul smell from its mouth almost made the female player faint. Her body trembled as she waited for death, unable to distinguish between reality and the game, filled with fear but unable to resist.

Suddenly, she felt something grab her, and the wind from the rapid movement messed up her hair. Then, the robot started running, the characteristic metallic friction sound of the mech resounding. The female player, expecting death, opened her eyes in surprise and found herself held in the hand of a mech.

In her field of vision was a man sitting in the mech's cockpit, driving it away with a serious expression. Though not particularly handsome, the man had saved her from certain death, making her feel a special connection as she looked at his face.

"Ah..." Just as the female player was immersed in this indescribable feeling, a shadow blocked the sunlight above her. She saw the Worm King's grotesque mouth lunging towards the mech and couldn't help but scream in terror. Her scream was filled with fear, but also concern, not for herself but for the mech.

The rapidly running mech, as if it had eyes in the back of its head, twisted its body and turned around in mid-air, simultaneously sweeping its heavy right leg.

The turn, jump, and kick were executed in one fluid motion, creating a breathtaking sight. These three actions were completed while running, and the complexity of the operation was such that even a seasoned player might not have executed it so perfectly.

Bang! The rapid kick from the running mech hit the side of the Worm King's gaping mouth just as it was about to swallow the mech's metal head, the timing perfect. The Worm King's head was knocked to the side.

The heavy mech landed, its right leg sweeping out as the left leg bent, the knee hitting the ground with a thud, absorbing the force of the fall. The entire mech shook, but the metal hand holding the female player remained steady. The heavy mech then stood up and continued running.

All of this happened in just a few seconds. The turn, jump, kick, landing, and running were executed smoothly, without any sense of disconnect.

"Awesome!" The player with almond eyes, watching from a distance, couldn't help but shout. The Worm King's rapid attack had made him nervous for the Cleaner, but he didn't expect the Cleaner to handle it so easily.

"Awesome, you big fat head, hurry up and draw the aggro!" The Cleaner, driving the mech, shouted into the earpiece.

He had snatched the female player from the Worm King's mouth and had to keep the mech's arm steady. Since the female player was not on his team, the Cleaner was careful not to accidentally crush her.

So the mech's right arm had to remain stable. Even for a human, performing a series of actions required coordination, let alone an old, clunky mech. The Cleaner had to keep the arm steady while performing the actions, making the entire sequence look smooth.

But such rapid operations, while losing the coordination of one arm and maintaining the force to prevent the female player from being thrown out and killed by inertia, drained the Cleaner's energy.

"Ah? Oh, oh, oh, hold on, I'm coming!" The player with almond eyes, excitedly hitting his right fist into his left palm, was stunned by the Cleaner's shout. He then nodded and chased after the Worm King, who was out of his attack range. He needed to get closer to attack.
