"Ms. Wang, there aren't many emergency patients today." The young resident doctor ran up to the nurse and handed her a bottle of iced tea.
"I don't drink sweet drinks." Wang Jia didn't take the drink.
"Look at my memory." The resident doctor patted his head and laughed, "It's this time of day, everyone must be exhausted. It's our turn to step in."
The resident doctor and the nurse were colleagues, not like the interns who had no one to care for them. It wasn't right to make them wait for so long without a chance to get their hands dirty. Wang Jia's tone softened, "There's no work right now."
"Is there ever a time when the emergency department has no patients?" The resident doctor laughed.
The emergency department is essentially the screening department of the hospital. In larger hospitals, the emergency department transfers a large number of patients to other departments every day, especially critical patients. After simple treatment and stabilization of vital signs, they are urgently sent to the operating room.
In a sense, as long as the emergency department wants to work, there's always an endless amount of work to do.
The resident doctors also came to the emergency department for this reason, to get a chance to assist in surgeries.
Wang Jia hesitated for a moment but didn't reveal the situation in the treatment room. She only said, "Today's patients are a bit special..."
"Special? We can handle anything. Right, Old Wu?" Another resident doctor joined in, putting his arm around the first one.
Old Wu nodded seriously, "Whether it's a ping-pong ball stuck in the throat or a ping-pong ball stuck in the other end, we can remove it."
Wang Jia, who had been a nurse for a few years, wasn't about to be taken down by the two residents' crude jokes. She said sternly, "Our standard in the emergency department is to remove golf balls."
"How could it be a golf ball..." The two young doctors were instantly defeated.
"Alright, Dr. Wu, Dr. Li, come and help me." Nurses, after a while, tend to have a tough exterior but a soft heart. Wang Jia, though sharp-tongued, still wanted to give the residents a chance. Whether they could seize it was up to the attending physicians and the department heads.
In the office a few meters away, the interns looked longingly at the outside, but they didn't even get a chance to hear a sharp word.
Dr. Wu and Dr. Li followed Wang Jia excitedly, taking quick steps into the treatment room.
As they crossed the threshold, a familiar heat hit them.
Doctors, nurses, patients, and their families moved back and forth in the small treatment room. Taking a deep breath, it felt like inhaling a suffocating atmosphere.
However, Dr. Wu and Dr. Li had completely opposite feelings. They cherished every opportunity to get their hands dirty, whether it was removing a ping-pong ball, a golf ball, or a volleyball, they were ready to take on the responsibility.
"Dr. Zhou, are these the ones waiting for stitches? Do you need our help?" Dr. Wu found a familiar emergency doctor and then looked at the men with tattoos on their arms, drooling.
After spending some time in the emergency department, he had figured out the doctors' personalities. The department head and deputy head were too far away to mention, but among the attending physicians, Dr. Zhou was the most willing to give opportunities.
Of course, this could also be interpreted as him being ugly but friendly and willing to take shortcuts.
Dr. Zhou was slowly cleaning a wound on a man with tattoos, saying, "They do need stitches, but they're not under my care."
"Huh? Has the assignment changed?" Dr. Wu looked around curiously.
The emergency department also had a bed management system. An attending physician or senior resident would be responsible for a certain number of beds, and the patients assigned to those beds would be under their care to ensure accountability.
The deputy head and head physicians only dealt with the diseases themselves, and the other issues were handled by the attending physicians and senior residents.
In Dr. Wu's impression, the beds in front of them were all under Dr. Zhou's care.
But Dr. Zhou said indifferently, "They asked Dr. Ling to treat their wounds."
"Who is Dr. Ling?" The surname was uncommon, and Dr. Wu couldn't help but look around.
"Right there." Dr. Zhou pointed.
As a local, he wasn't willing to advertise for the newcomer.
Following Dr. Zhou's direction, Dr. Wu saw Ling Ran sitting in a cubicle.
"Isn't he an intern?" Dr. Wu was so surprised that his mouth dropped open.
Dr. Zhou was taken aback and asked, "You know him?"
"He came with the interns this morning."
"Then you must be mistaken." Dr. Zhou laughed. Medical skills can't be faked.
With Ling Ran's skills, the skin he had stitched could probably help the Dutch reclaim Taiwan. How could he be an intern?
Dr. Wu wasn't too familiar with the situation. His main focus was on getting practice, so he laughed it off and said, "I see several patients waiting. Why don't we go help?"
Dr. Li nodded eagerly.
Dr. Zhou chuckled, "Why don't you ask the patients if they want your help?"
"Patients in the emergency department can choose their doctors?" Dr. Wu was confused.
Dr. Zhou glanced at him, "If they want to choose, what can you do?"
Dr. Wu was speechless.
Dr. Li, who came with him, wasn't convinced. He found a man with a unicorn tattoo on his arm and asked with a smile, "Does your wound hurt? Come over, I'll help you stitch it."
A boy who likes unicorns can't be too violent, right?
The man with the unicorn tattoo looked at Dr. Li disdainfully, "I'm waiting for Dr. Ling."
"It's just a simple stitch, anyone can do it." Dr. Li, eager to get his hands dirty, was more attentive to the unicorn man than to his girlfriend.
The unicorn man snorted, "Don't think I'm a newbie. I've been to your Yunhua emergency department many times. Do you see the stag on my arm?"
"That's a deer?" Dr. Li widened his eyes, looking at the one-horned deer head, lost in thought. Do tattoo artists not watch animal documentaries these days?
The unicorn man said angrily, "This antler was sewn crooked by a stupid doctor. I had to wash it and turn it into a unicorn. What if you sew it crooked again?"
"Turn it into a horse head." The man next to him laughed, "Hahaha!"
"It could be mistaken for a donkey head."
"Donkey head is still giving you face. It could be a donkey's penis. If it turns into a mule, that's even worse."
Clearly, they had discussed this topic before. As soon as it came up, they all laughed uncontrollably.
"Broken-tailed tiger, crooked-footed dragon, wooden arhat, what are you so proud of?" The unicorn man raised his arm, the bloody unicorn looking quite cute.
Dr. Wu tried to suppress his laughter and saw that the tiger on the broken-tailed tiger man's arm had a clearly wrong tail.
The crooked-footed dragon wasn't as obvious, but upon closer inspection, the clouds under the dragon's belly were covered by its claws.
The wooden arhat puzzled Dr. Wu.
Doctors like to solve puzzles.
Dr. Wu thought hard.
The owner of the wooden arhat, under Dr. Wu's gaze, became increasingly annoyed, "I used to have eighteen arhats. Stupid doctor."
Dr. Wu was taken aback, barely managing to hold back his laughter.
"You got your tattoos injured, and there's nothing that can be done about it." Dr. Wu tried to hide his smile and explained, "Your initial wounds were probably large, and the muscle tissue was likely torn. After cleaning the wound, it can't be stitched back exactly the same."
"If you can't stitch, just say so. Why so many words?" The men were impatient.
Dr. Wu said seriously, "It's not that I can't stitch. Stitching depends on the conditions, not just the technique."
"Plastic surgeons can stitch anything." The unicorn man was even more unhappy.
He had gotten used to the unicorn. At least girls liked it. He didn't want it to turn into a horse head or a donkey head.
Dr. Wu was defeated by the man's logic. After a few seconds, he said uncomfortably, "In short, whether a tattoo can be stitched well depends on the injury, not the skill. It's a matter of luck. Even plastic surgeons can only make the scar smaller."
The unicorn man suddenly laughed, "You almost fooled me. I think you're just a fraud. You can't do it, yet you talk big. Look at Dr. Ling, he can do anything! You just don't have the skills."
The other injured men with tattoos agreed, praising Dr. Ling and mocking Dr. Wu for lacking skills.
Dr. Wu's face turned red.
After studying for over a decade, always ranking at the top of his class, scoring in the top 5000 in the province on the college entrance exam, attending a 985 medical school, and working hard for five years, he finally secured a position at the famous Yunhua Hospital in the province. He worked long hours, studied late into the night, and waited outside the emergency department for every opportunity, and then...
He was mocked by a few men with tattoos for lacking skills?
Dr. Wu huffed and decided not to try to assist with the stitching. He got up and headed to the cubicle where Dr. Ling was.
As he walked, he thought to himself: Stitching is just stitching. Can you really make a flower out of it?
Then, he saw Dr. Ling's technique.
Simple and unadorned?
No way.
Even a layman could tell that the needlework was not simple.
For a moment, Dr. Wu wanted to mock it as "showy."
But as he watched the large eagle on the patient's back, which had been split open, slowly restored to its original state, he couldn't bring himself to say it.
Each of Dr. Ling's movements, from the first stitch to the final knot, was not only precise but also carefully considered. Otherwise, the eagle's head on the patient's back, which had been split open, couldn't be stitched back together.
However, ordinary doctors wouldn't consider a tattoo so much.
Doctors are there to treat and save lives, not to be your tattoo artist. They prefer to use their skills on the inside of the skin, not the outside.
Of course, most doctors don't have such delicate skills.
Most doctors have limited energy.
Except for residents.
At this thought, Dr. Wu suddenly felt like crying.
The urge to cry lasted for at least five seconds.
Then, Dr. Wu composed himself, suppressed his emotions, and, with the shameless persistence of a resident, came to Dr. Ling's side and praised him in a beautiful voice, "Dr. Ling, your stitching is amazing. How did you practice this?"
The learning spirit of a resident is so pure.
Dr. Ling, who had already stitched ten people, was looking forward to the experience points after completing the task. When suddenly asked, he blurted out, "It's from the beginner's package."
Dr. Wu was taken aback and laughed, "Dr. Ling, you're so funny. We met in the lounge before. You came with the interns, so I thought you were an intern too. Are you a part-time lecturer at the medical school?"
"Call me Ling Ran. I'm an intern, and I'm not funny." Ling Ran's tone was a bit harsh.
He needed to concentrate to complete the bandaging. Master-level stitching didn't include this part.
Dr. Wu, ignoring Ling Ran's tone, was stunned by the word "intern."
Dr. Wu blinked and slapped his thigh, "I knew it! I knew it..."
Interns are still medical students who haven't graduated. They often call residents "teacher."
But!
But...
This guy really is good at stitching.
Dr. Wu suddenly recalled the season when the peaches were ripe. At 30, he had saved up enough money from being single to order his long-desired Giant ATX online. A freshman, driving his father's BMW 330, delivered it to him, accompanied by his girlfriend, who was helping him earn money through part-time work...
His eyes inexplicably moistened.
