Chapter 19

He leaned over the child, his mouth against the child’s mouth, his eyes fixed on the child’s eyes, and his hands gripping the child’s hands...
This is a description from the Old Testament of the Bible about Elisha saving a child.
"Resuscitation from hanging... if there is still a slight warmth in the heart, it can be treated within a day: slowly untie, do not cut the rope, and lay the person down with a blanket above and below... one person should press on the chest and move it several times, another should massage the arms and legs and bend and stretch them. If the body is already stiff, gradually force the bending and stretching, and press the abdomen. Do this for about the time it takes to cook a meal, until the breath comes out of the mouth."
This is a record from the *Jingui Yaolue* (Essential Prescriptions of the Golden Chamber) by Zhang Zhongjing about the resuscitation of a person who has hanged themselves.
Thanks to his rebirth, the words he had seen out of curiosity in his previous life were now imprinted in John’s mind word for word, giving him a basis to respond to Old Hunter’s questioning. Of course, John could not directly recite these two passages; he only gave a general account, explaining that he had a reason for letting the middle-aged woman do what she did.
However, he did not know that several decades earlier, there had already been reports of successful resuscitation using mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, though it had not attracted much attention.
"Fortunately, the situation was urgent, and I didn’t let that woman follow the standard procedure strictly, otherwise it would have been really troublesome."
Thinking back to how he had chosen to direct the middle-aged woman to save his daughter to avoid suspicion, John was secretly relieved but also felt a bit nervous. The procedures were only roughly followed.
Because in his previous life, there was a renowned expert in emergency medicine at the hospital, and every time a new version of the *CPR Guidelines* was released, the hospital would organize training for doctors and nurses in basic life support. John remembered clearly that the guidelines had strict regulations for artificial respiration and chest compressions, such as the sequence, ratio, and frequency. If he had to follow the standards, it would have been difficult for the woman to perform them, and explaining them would have been even more challenging.
After listening to John’s explanation, Old Hunter’s furrowed brows gradually relaxed.
Old Hunter had definitely never heard of the *Jingui Yaolue*, but how could he not know the Bible?
And upon reflection, it seemed there were indeed a few lines like that in it!
However, looking at his smiling grandson, Old Hunter had no intention of praising him right away. He still maintained a stern face and scolded him in a low voice, "Even so, your actions were too reckless just now! What if the methods in those books didn’t work? What if you didn’t save that girl? Do you know what kind of blame you would face?"
"Um..."
John opened his mouth, intending to argue, but after hesitating for a moment, he sighed lightly and nodded, saying, "Yes, sir, I was just too eager to save the child and didn’t think much about it. I will be more cautious in the future."
After hearing John’s explanation, Old Hunter’s expression darkened again.
It wasn’t because he detected the敷衍 in John’s tone, but because the boy had changed his address from “Grandpa” to “sir,” which displeased the old man.
The carriage arrived at the hotel where Joshua and the others were staying without further conversation.
Out of courtesy, the two should have come to check on them, and since Old Hunter and Mr. Stone were quite close, they naturally had to confirm that Joshua was fine.
"Is the girl alive?"
As soon as the door was knocked, Emma’s eyes lit up when she saw John and the others, and she immediately asked anxiously.
"She’s alive."
John was slightly taken aback, then nodded and smiled.
He was ultimately very happy to have saved a cute little one, and seeing the girl so lively now, he was even more relieved that Joshua was fine, which made him feel even more cheerful.
Upon entering, they indeed saw that Joshua’s complexion had largely returned to normal. He was sitting on the bed, wrapped in a thick blanket, holding a steaming cup of coffee.
Everyone greeted each other warmly.
Emma eagerly told the others about the girl being saved, and everyone showed great curiosity about John’s miraculous performance today. He had to explain it again with the same reason, which elicited a series of exclamations.
"I think John would be very suitable to become a doctor."
After taking a sip of hot coffee, Joshua said with a warm smile, "He has a sense of justice and compassion, and he seems very sensitive to this kind of knowledge. If you studied medicine, you would definitely become an excellent doctor!"
"Hmm? I think that’s a good idea!"
Hearing her brother’s words, Emma’s eyes lit up, and she immediately clapped her hands and laughed. After today’s incident, the little girl’s dislike for John had largely dissipated, and she even felt a bit of admiration and fondness, which naturally changed her attitude.
The two young people felt that their suggestion was quite good, but apart from a flash of complexity in John’s eyes, Old Hunter, Mr. Stone, and Mrs. Stone all showed a dismissive attitude.
Seeing that their children seemed very interested in the topic, Mr. Stone had to clap his hands and say, "Alright, let’s leave this decision to Mr. Hunter. Besides, John is still young; who knows what the future will bring?"
As a long-time friend and close business partner of Old Hunter, Mr. Stone was well aware of the considerable wealth of the seemingly stern old man, so he could not imagine that Old Hunter would allow his only legitimate heir to become a doctor!
After all, this was 1880s America!
In this era, being a doctor was not the prestigious and high-status profession it would become in the future. Medical schools were not the exclusive domain of the top university graduates; as long as you could afford the tuition, you could attend, and there was no residency training or medical licensing exams upon graduation.
Moreover...
Even in New York City, how much could a well-known doctor earn in a year?
Just by looking at Old Hunter’s smiling face, it was clear that he was not taking Joshua’s words seriously.
After chatting for a while, Old Hunter stood up and smiled, "Although Joshua seems to be in good spirits, I still suggest he rest here for the night. We won’t disturb him any further."
"Thank you for your concern."
Joshua quickly stood up and expressed his gratitude respectfully.
After a brief conversation at the door, Old Hunter and Mr. Stone left with John. He had originally planned to introduce John to Mr. Stone to lay a good foundation for the future, but he did not expect such an incident to completely ruin their plans for a picnic.
However, in terms of the outcome, Old Hunter was quite satisfied.
On one hand, John had performed exceptionally well, though somewhat rashly, which was normal for his age. His sense of justice, compassion, and decisive actions had been noticed by Mr. Stone, making it easy for the upright gentleman to like him. On the other hand, Joshua’s performance had also earned Old Hunter’s high regard, at least in terms of character.
In short, the next generation of the Hunter and Stone families were both excellent, and it seemed they got along well, which was very beneficial for maintaining the relationship between the two families.
"The key is to cultivate this child well!"
Sitting in the swaying carriage, Old Hunter’s gaze returned to John, and he thought to himself.
Perhaps sensing his grandfather’s intense gaze, John felt a chill and swallowed, then smiled and said, "It’s almost 12 o’clock. How should we solve our lunch problem?"
Without answering John’s question, Old Hunter pondered for a moment and then suddenly asked, "John, have you ever thought about what you want to do in the future?"
"Ah?"
Old Hunter’s question made John pause.
He had certainly thought about this question, and in fact, he had thought about it almost every day for the past eleven years since his rebirth, but he still had no answer.
Doctor?
Scientist?
Entrepreneur?
Investor?
With the memories of his previous life, John could excel in many fields, and with the foundation laid by Old Hunter, he had enough capital from the start, without having to start from scratch. The path ahead was smooth.
But...
Having too many choices was not necessarily a good thing. At least for John, hearing his grandfather’s question, he fell into deep thought once again, just as he often did: "What should I do in the future..."
