"Selena, can you please sit down nicely?"
Ignoring John's anger and questioning, Miss Philipp walked calmly to her daughter's side, tucking the little foot that had just been exposed back into her clothes. Only then did she turn to look at her former student, her face calm.
Staring with wide eyes, John saw the calm but sorrowful gaze in Miss Philipp's eyes, and the anger in his heart suddenly cooled as if doused with a bucket of cold water.
The sudden burst of anger had made him lose his composure. He simply could not accept what he had seen, subconsciously believing that Miss Philipp had been under immense pressure due to her difficult life, which had led her to take it out on her child. But seeing the lady's calm expression and composed reaction, John quickly realized that what he had seen and thought might not be the truth!
"Miss Philipp."
Taking a deep breath to calm himself, John stepped forward and asked softly, "Can you tell me what happened? This child..."
"Why do you want to know?"
Before John could finish, Miss Philipp rudely interrupted him, her voice cold. When John first appeared, she had been slightly surprised and flustered, but now her expression and tone were absolutely cold. It was as if John were a complete stranger, and the lady only wanted him to leave her room as quickly as possible!
"This..."
This question left John speechless.
Considering their relationship, Anna Philipp was only his former governess, not exactly close but not distant either. If it were simply out of sympathy, there were plenty of women and children begging on the streets, and John had never given them any significant help.
Sometimes John himself couldn't understand why he was so fixated on this matter!
After a long silence, John sighed heavily and nodded, "Miss Philipp, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have come to pry into your privacy... but I really have no ill intentions!"
At this point, John couldn't help but glance at the little girl sitting quietly on the bed, sighing again. He took out the envelope he had prepared and gently placed it on the table beside him.
"What is this?"
Miss Philipp immediately asked upon seeing the envelope.
"Some money."
John's mood had calmed, and he said frankly, "Miss Philipp, I just want to give my friend a little help, a small, insignificant help."
"No, no, I can't accept your money anymore!"
After hearing John's words, Miss Philipp's reaction was intense, and she immediately waved her hand, "The hundred dollars from last time haven't been paid back yet, and I don't have a job, so I can't..."
"Miss Philipp!"
This time it was John's turn to interrupt. He stepped forward and looked into Miss Philipp's eyes, speaking sincerely, "You were my governess, and even though I don't know why my grandfather suddenly dismissed you, in my heart, you are still my friend, the one who taught me so much. So please don't refuse... even for Selena, okay?"
"This, John..."
Seeing John's still youthful face, Miss Philipp was finally moved!
Turning to look at her innocent daughter, the proud lady's cold expression gradually faded, and her eyes, which had been lifeless, slowly came alive, quickly turning red.
"I'm sorry for disturbing you."
Seeing that Miss Philipp was no longer firmly refusing, John felt a weight lift from his heart. He bowed slightly and said, "I have no intention of interfering in your family and life... I won't come again."
Just then, John had decided not to meddle in Miss Philipp's affairs anymore. Although he truly considered her a friend and wanted to help her, it had to be on a voluntary basis. Now, he felt he was intruding on this proud lady.
With that, John turned and walked towards the door.
Behind him, Miss Philipp's gaze flickered. She looked at the envelope on the table and then at John's back, her expression becoming very complex, a mix of gratitude, hesitation, and a hint of sadness.
"Creak!"
Just as John opened the door and saw the coachman Fiet standing outside, Miss Philipp's hoarse voice suddenly called out, "John, you... do you want to hear my story..."
...
"Bang!"
The wooden door closed again.
Perhaps because it was too old, the door couldn't be closed normally, so it had to be slammed shut. The sharp sound startled the coachman outside!
Seeing John return to the house, Fiet couldn't help but scratch his head, puzzled.
In his simple mind, he couldn't understand the thoughts of the young master of the Hunteral family. Why would a wealthy young master, and the only heir to the family, come to such a dirty place to see a woman who was neither beautiful nor young?
"Just because she was his governess?"
Recalling the occasional conversations he had overheard between his master and John, Fiet couldn't help but scoff.
Fiet had worked for the Stone family for nearly twenty years, from being an apprentice to becoming the family's coachman. He was very satisfied with his current life because the Stone family was very kind and paid him well, enough to feed his entire family. But Fiet had never thought that his master would treat a dismissed governess like John did, at least not to the point of coming to such a place!
"This isn't the behavior of a proper gentleman."
Shaking his head with a serious expression, Fiet silently criticized the young master of the Hunteral family.
Of course, he only dared to criticize in his mind because he knew that Joshua and the young master were very close, and he didn't want to get into trouble. So, no matter what he thought, he could only wait obediently at the door for John to come out.
As the coachman Fiet stood there, lost in thought about matters that weren't his to judge, a muffled sound came from inside the house, followed by John's surprised cry, "What did you say?"
...
Ha ha, this chapter was a sudden inspiration, an experiment in writing style, so it's a bit short. There will be another update later.
Hmm, it doesn't feel quite right.
