Bai Weijin was worried about Gu Yeyu when her phone rang, which gave her a scare.

The ringtone was specially set for calls Dr. Xing would make, just in case there occurred any emergency.

“Miss Bai, I’m afraid you need to hurry here.”

“Your father… is fatally ill…”

‘What do you mean by ‘fatally ill’? Make it clear!’ Bai Weijin thought to herself, yet she had no courage to ask the doctor.

Suddenly there was a bang. Bai Weijin’s hands felt weak, and her mobile phone fell on the ground.

“Miss Bai? Miss Bai?”

The doctor on the other end of the phone anxiously called her yet received no response from Bai Weijin.

Dr. Xing looked at the screen with a frown. ‘It must be a severe blow to her.’

‘I shall tell Gu Yeze right away!’

“Weijin, what’s wrong with you?”

Bai Weijin was in a trance the moment she hung up. Gu Yeyu sensed something strange about her and immediately asked.

“I… Nothing…”

On hearing what Gu Yeyu said, Bai Weijin subconsciously managed a smile, in case Gu Yeyu would worry about her.

Yet she failed.

A great pain came over Bai Weijin. She could hardly speak for the ache in her heart, yet tears came dropping down from her eyes.

Bai Weijin didn’t sense that until she felt a coldness on her cheek.

‘Hmm? Am I crying?’

‘How come? He means nothing to me. Yes, exactly.’

Her tearful eyes greeted Gu Yeyu. She anxiously asked, “What’s wrong with you? Why are you crying?”

“Has anyone bullied you? Tell me if there is, for I’ll beat him up!”

Her sudden solicitude almost made Bai Weijin’s tears stream down.

‘No, I cannot let anyone see me crying.’

She managed to choke back her tears. Covering her mouth with one hand, Bai Weijin ran away.

Chu Jiran felt so sorry about what had happened to her that his intinctive reaction was to go after her immediately.

Just when he made a step forward, something occurred to Chu Jiran. He shot a look at Gu Yeyu.

What if something happened to the girl who just had been attacked?

Having weighed up the circumstances, Chu Jiran chose to stay here and guard Gu Yeyu, though his mind was all on Bai Weijin.

Bai Weijin met Dr. Xing as soon as she rushed to the hospital.

“Miss Bai, your father is in a critical condition and there’s no cure for his disease. I’m afraid it’s time to say goodbye.”

Dr. Xing didn’t have the heart to tell Bai Weijin the news, for her eyes were swollen from crying. But as the saying went, better a finger off than always aching. He finally decided to inform her.

As to the remaining matters, it would be Gu Yeze’s business. His task was completed already.

Her lips quivering, Bai Weijin uttered no words at all but slightly nodded.

In case her father saw any difference in her, Bai Weijin went to the bathroom to have a wash and fix her makeup before entering the ward.

She pushed the door open. Gu Yeze had been waiting for her there for a long time.

“Weijin, why are you both here today?” Bai Hongbo narrowed his eyes into a smile, kindly speaking to Gu Yeze and Bai Weijin.

“We… we…”

Bai Weijin had no idea whether to tell her father the news, so she told a lie, “We’ve finished work early and come to see you together.”

“Well, is there any place you’re dying to go to? I’ll take you there when you recover.”

A benign smile tugged at the corner of Bai Hongbo’s mouth, as if he had been disillusioned with this mortal world. He slowly opened his mouth.

“You don’t have to lie to me. I know about my condition.”

“Dr. Xing has given me less and less medicine these days. I can tell from that.”

On hearing what he said, Bai Weijin broke down in tears.

“Dad…”

At this time, Bai Weijin was just like a four or five-year-old girl, tearfully running to his father to feel his last warmth.

‘Gods decide whether you live or die. Seems that I’m meeting my death.’

Bai Hongbo had no idea how to bring comfort to Bai Weijin but gently caressed his daughter’s head with one hand.

‘With my own daughter weeping for me, I can finally die a worthy death.’

The long-term chemotherapy reduced Bai Hongbo to such a skeleton that Bai Weijin could even feel an ache when she pressed her face to his body.

It was quite uncomfortable.

Yet Bai Weijin didn’t mind it in the slightest. She kept breathing in the smell around Bai Hongbo, for she knew there would be fewer chances for her to do so.

Gu Yeze made no utterance but stood silently watching them.

He just hoped Bai Weijin could be all right.

An afternoon soon passed. Reluctant to see her off, Bai Hongbo still opened his mouth.

“You should be back. The Bais will come to pick me up.”

Bai Weijin remained silent for a while before she gave a nod.

Seeing Bai Weijin and Bai Hongbo both calmed down, Gu Yeze heaved a sigh of relief and walked outwards.

“Wait a minute, Gu Yeze. We need to talk.”

Bai Weijin’s husky voice came behind, which astonished Gu Yeze. ‘What’s up? Is she gonna sob out to me?’

He could hardly imagine what it was like when the strong woman acted like a spoilt girl in front of him.

Gu Yeze couldn’t help looking at her with expectation.

They stepped out of the ward without a word. Bai Weijin opened her mouth with a sullen look, “How’s your investigation going?”

Her sudden questioning left Gu Yeze stupefied. ‘What’s she talking about?’

After all, they hadn’t been on speaking terms for a long time.
