Bai Weijin sat up, scrawled some words and restlessly laid the pen aside.
She was in no mood for work during the afternoon. Out of the glass window, her colleagues were well-behaved, uttering no gossip.
The way she had fixed those two girls for gossiping about her must have impressed them.
When it came to the two girls, both were mediocre employees with poor backgrounds. What was more, Bai Weijin had ordered them to leave.
Heads of other divisions dared not approve their transfer application. The two had no alternative but to resign. Also, they had no nerve to continue working at Gu’s Group.
Finally, it was time to knock off.
Bai Weijin went out of her office. Gu Yeze wasn’t waiting for her at the door as usual.
Zhang Lanxin walked fast to keep up with her, “Sister Bai!”
Her earnest expression amused Bai Weijin. After last afternoon, Zhang Lanxin changed the way of addressing her in private, though the former still called her Director Bai in public.
They walked to the elevator.
One couldn’t avoid his enemy no matter how he wanted to, as the old saying went.
With an exclusive elevator, why was Gu Yeze coming to take the staff one?
There was nobody inside but him. Well, no one dared to take one lift with him.
Zhang Lanxin felt a little scared and backed away, “Sister Bai, it occurs to me that I’ve left something in the office…”
Before she finished saying, Bai Weijin pulled her into the elevator. She gave Zhang Lanxin a wink and soothed her, “I’m here. Don’t worry.”
Zhang Lanxin felt like weeping but had no tears. She was afraid of facing President and didn’t want to play gooseberry…
Gu Yeze couldn’t figure out why he had taken the staff elevator. Seeing Bai Weijin come in, he did not bother to glance at her.
Bai Weijin also had no intention of talking to him. The three people went out of elevator in an intense atmosphere.
Gu Yeze felt rather out of sorts.
Zhang Lanxin sensed the hostile atmosphere in the elevator and took a deep breath as soon as she walked out.
Standing between the two stern-faced big shots, she was very likely to become a ‘cannon fodder’.
Bai Weijin patted Zhang Lanxin on the back and left.
Gu Yeze’s car was parked on the other side, yet she went in the opposite direction.
Fuming about what she did, Gu Yeze started the car and sped by her, which scared the hell out of Bai Weijin. Before she could react, Gu Yeze had disappeared from view.
“Nut!” Bai Weijin shouted in his direction.
Gu Yeze wasn’t at home, for there weren’t his shoes in the hall.
Bai Weijin didn’t care where he had gone. Unexpectedly, she received a call from his grandma.
“Hello, may I speak to Weijin?”
Bai Weijin couldn’t make things difficult for the old lady. She answered, “Yes, speaking.”
“Have you finished work? It’s a long time since we met. Why don’t you come and have dinner with us?” Granny Gu said smilingly.
Bai Weijin found it hard to refuse such kindness. Thinking that she had been too busy to visit the old lady, Bai Weijin said yes.
Gu’s house was imposing as usual. Bai Weijin noticed that Gu Yeze parked his car outside when she entered the house. It was this car that almost hit her just now.
Bai Weijin’s face fell.
The moment she entered, Bai Weijin was aware of a weird atmosphere.
Besides Gu Yeze, Gu Yelin and Shi Qian were both there.
Everyone sat at the table and waited for her.
Bai Weijin smiled shyly, “Grandma, sorry I’m late.”
Granny Gu didn’t in the least blame her for this but told her to sit down. Seeing she looked highly enthusiastic, Bai Weijin understood that she had no idea of their quarrel.
She heaved a sigh of relief and sat next to Gu Yeze.
Shi Qian had just got a scolding, yet she still couldn’t keep her mouth shut, “Weijin, no matter how busy you are, it’s necessary to visit Grandma and keep her company. We have never for a single week stopped holding family gatherings.”
Granny Gu’s face darkened, “Nonsense, business is the top priority. What’s more, don’t you know why Yeze and Weijin kept busy these days? Who on earth made the blunder?”
Shi Qian’s hand shook when she held the chopsticks. Gu Yelin also looked awkward.
He turned her head and told Shi Qian off, “You and your big mouth.”
Maid Wu’s coming lightened the atmosphere, “Dinner is ready.” Then she said to Bai Weijin:
“Granny Gu has prepared a lot of food you like. Try it.”
Bai Weijin nodded and thanked her.
Granny Gu looked at Bai Weijin when an idea flashed through her mind, “I wonder when Yeyu would come back. She has lived abroad for years with Rufeng and Jiaqing. I really miss her.”
Gu Rufeng and Luo Jiaqing? Bai Weijin knew they were Gu Yeze’s parents. Because Gu’s Group intended to expand into the foreign market, both of them had been staying abroad year in year out.
They returned home once in a while.
But who on earth was Yeyu?
Seeing her feel perplexed, Granny Gu asked, “Hasn’t Yeze told you about her? She is his sister, now living abroad with Rufeng and Jiaqing.”
Bai Weijin finally got this clear. She had thought Granny Gu had only two grandchildren, Gu Yeze and Gu Yelin, to find that Gu Yeze actually had a sister.
‘Is his sister as arrogant as him?’ Bai Weijin cast a sidelong glance at Gu Yeze.
Yet he pretended not to feel her glance.
Granny Gu didn’t sense what was going on between them, but Shi Qian couldn’t help interrupting her, “Grandma, Yeyu naturally misses you, too. She’s a sensible child and will definitely be home for the New Year holiday to see you.”
This time, her words finally cheered Granny Gu up. The old lady nodded and gave her a meaningful glance, “If only you could save me a lot of worry like Yeyu and Weijin.”
“I will.” Shi Qian forced a smile.
The conversation came to an end. They started to enjoy the meal when Granny Gu asked Gu Yeze about how the company was recently.
Gu Yeze slowly swallowed down the rice, while Gu Yelin clenched his fists.
Gu Yeze replied, “The two lots acquired from Wu’s Group are soon open for sale. Everything is going smoothly.”
Granny Gu was gratified, “I have every confidence that you can do it well.”
Bai Weijin took a mouthful of the food and carefully darted a look at Gu Yelin.
His hands kept trembling.
Bai Weijin wanted to laugh when Granny Gu asked, “Why did you ask for a leave in such busy days?”
Gu Yelin didn’t want to get a scolding and lose face before Gu Yeze, imploring, “Grandma…”
Granny Gu’s people were now right-hand men of Gu Yeze, so it was not difficult for her to be perfectly clear about what happened in the company.
“Go to work as soon as possible and help Yeze run the company well. Forget about those useless thoughts.”
Gu Yelin had no choice but to agree while he struggled to contain his resentment.
