Chapter 7 of 17
Chapter 7
16 min read3,947 words
With the engagement dissolved and a sense of relief, let's review the plot of the original work, "Emeralda and the Witch Legend," and organize the current situation.
The story begins in a small village deep in the mountains. Emeralda is a bright, innocent, and kind-hearted beauty who lives with an old woman who is not her blood relative. However, she has a secret she cannot tell anyone. She was born with the ability to foresee the future. Fearful of her power, Emeralda lived by the old woman's advice, trying not to believe in her premonitions.
One day, a witch claiming to be a disciple of the savior Aronia Carnelian arrives, and the villagers hold a welcoming feast. However, Emeralda foresees the witch massacring the villagers and, after much deliberation, decides to warn them.
Naturally, no one believes her, and the witch discovers her power and tries to kill her. She is saved by two passing young men and learns that she is the witch's hated child.
The moment she takes the hand of one of the handsome young men, Emeralda receives a vision of the destruction of Mistria. In the language of the previous life, this would be called a "heroine awakening event."
After that, the old woman with whom she lived reveals that Aronia is the evil witch before dying, and she discovers that one of the young men is actually a prince. There are also episodes where she befriends a knight who hates witches.
To uncover the secret of her birth and protect the people of Mistria, Emeralda sets out on a journey with Prince Rain and Vil.
As they pursue strange incidents, they gradually gather companions, and while developing a romantic relationship with Prince Rain, they eventually uncover the mastermind behind all the incidents—
...which leads to the commotion at yesterday's wedding ceremony.
If the story follows the original, from here Emeralda will strive to break the curse on the prince. She will gather information and weapons, learn Sonia's purpose, and face internal conflicts, leading to a messy final battle. In "original anime," this is a common scenario. In the end, Vil will die to defeat Sonia, and Emeralda will marry the prince, living happily ever after.
However, reality has deviated completely from the original storyline. This is because I stepped down from the role of the villain and did not curse the prince.
I swear to all humanity that I am not the mastermind behind the strange incidents. After my mother's death, I lived a peaceful life in Cucuruj. It was very peaceful. Occasionally, bandits would come, and I would give them the appropriate hospitality—either by seducing and recruiting them, planting trauma and driving them away, or letting them sleep under cold earth. It was self-defense. What else could I do?
In any case, unlike in the original, I am not a pure evil witch. I have not committed any crimes that would warrant being denounced by a prince of a country.
However, until yesterday, things seemed to be progressing almost exactly as in the original. The real people seemed to have the same personalities as in the original.
What concerns me is that someone seems to have taken my place in causing the strange incidents and trying to pin the blame on me. I had heard rumors of strange incidents in Cucuruj but did not get involved. I stopped investigating because it might have caused more trouble.
It's strange. Even though I lacked the motivation, the events of the "anime" could have failed to unfold, but someone made the story progress as in the original.
...But honestly, it's a trivial issue.
Because I cannot lose.
I know the flow of the original "anime" that created this world. I also know some truths that were not revealed in the original. I am strong enough to protect myself and those I care about, and I am not foolish enough to be easily outsmarted.
I don't think anyone can pin false accusations on me in my current state and give me the same death as in the original.
Am I being too arrogant?
But because I am aware of this, I never let my guard down. I am never lazy. I understand what I can and cannot do, and I always strive to do my best to survive.
...But still.
I don't intend to give up entertainment, which might be my only weakness.
Acquiring Vil is a double-edged sword; it's not yet clear whether it will turn out to be a blessing or a curse. He is the strongest knight, and having him as an ally is reassuring, but his hatred of witches makes him a double-edged sword. Strategically, he is a difficult piece to use.
But that's okay. I find him adorable. I want to play with him.
While I can't say that the influence of the previous life and the "anime" is completely absent, I personally really like Vil.
Born in exchange for the lives of his parents, raised in a world that shunned him, watching his best friend and first love fall in love, enduring and sacrificing himself for his companions—
What would happen if I gave him something other than death in the future?
If I pampered him to the point of being overly sweet, perhaps—
