"Xiao Jia, I heard some of the elders have been criticizing you for knowingly buying fake goods recently..." The tall and robust Old Dong said to Jia Hongjian with a half-smile.

"Really? What did they say?" Jia Hongjian asked with a smile, showing great composure.

"They think you're just trying to draw attention to yourself, being overly shrewd, and acting as if you're deliberately seeking attention..." After Old Dong finished speaking, he began to observe Jia Hongjian's reaction.

Jia Hongjian smiled after hearing this. "I'm not a banknote; it's impossible for everyone to like me." His self-deprecating remark, often seen on the internet in later times, immediately caught the attention of the elders. "Besides, according to **'s theory, who are the enemies of the people, and who are the friends of the people? I think even if my intentions aren't 100% for the people, and I have some self-serving motives, I can still be considered a part of the united front, right? Objectively, it's beneficial for purifying the market, isn't it?"

Wow! His argument made the elders feel even more that he was unique. If Jia Hongjian's previous analysis of the future tax-sharing system could be done by a great economist, then his mature and clear-headed attitude about his position in society and his social status was something not everyone would have!

"Have you analyzed your position in the social camp?" The usually quiet Old Zhang suddenly asked.

"When I was young, I really enjoyed reading **'s complete works," Jia Hongjian lied without a hint of embarrassment. "After reading a lot, some things stayed in my mind. For example, the analysis of primary and secondary contradictions, the analysis of friends and enemies, and the art of struggle—uniting the majority, isolating the minority, and resolutely striking the fewest..."

"Hongjian, why hasn't the food come yet? Could you go and check for us?" Old Luo suddenly used a clear excuse to send Jia Hongjian away. Jia Hongjian, of course, understood, but he just smiled and left without a word.

Watching Jia Hongjian leave, Old Luo asked, "What do you think? Isn't this kid different from the average person?" The three elders nodded, and Old Zhu, who had been smiling and smoothing things over, also stopped smiling and said, "This child... is hard to fathom, hard to see through. But I think, he will either become a great sage or a great villain in the future..."

"Not a great villain, I don't think so. If he were really a great villain, he wouldn't show his differences in front of us; he would just win our favor. I think his openness and honesty in showing everything, rather than hiding it, is a form of sincerity," the usually quiet Old Zhang said.

"Yes, I agree," Old Luo nodded. "This little Hongjian is very different from others. He always makes me feel that a teenager has the insight of a middle-aged person. By the time he's in his thirties or forties, who knows what he'll be capable of? But I trust his character..."

At the same time, a new issue of the *Internal Reference Draft* was placed on the desks of all provincial and higher-level leaders across the country. This issue, also known as the *Domestic Dynamics Draft*, featured an article from the *People's Daily* titled "A Correct View of Wang Hongcheng's Invention."

At the beginning of the article, drafted by Wu Peizhen, a *People's Daily* correspondent in Heilongjiang, and Feng Zijie, a *Heilongjiang Daily* reporter, there was a rare "Editor's Note." In internal reference publications, which emphasize objective and factual reporting and minimize subjective commentary, such a clear statement of the author's subjective stance was very noticeable.

The Editor's Note read: "There is now considerable controversy over this matter. The two authors of this article, after working in the area for several years, believe that the matter is genuine and, if promoted, could have immeasurable benefits for the country's economic construction. They wish to report this to the central government in their personal names. We are publishing it for the reference of leaders."

In the subsequent part of the article, the two reporters described numerous scientific verification scenarios: "On March 19, 1993, the Shenyang Smelting Plant successfully applied Hongcheng's heavy oil emulsified fuel in a 3t/n steam boiler. This fuel, composed of 59% heavy oil and 41% water, was monitored by instruments, and the steam production per ton was found to be almost the same as that of heavy oil, with good combustion efficiency and no reduction in calorific value. This fuel is different from other heavy oil emulsification technologies; it not only ensures full atomization of heavy oil during combustion but also increases the heat value."

"Earlier this year, a railway bureau in Heilongjiang conducted two experiments with Hongcheng's emulsified fuel at the Sancha Tree Locomotive Depot. On February 6, a mixture of 67.7% water and 32.3% No. 20 diesel was used, and the experiment was monitored using national standards. Whether in no-load or load tests, the diesel locomotive's start-up characteristics, deceleration characteristics, and operational sounds were normal, with minimal exhaust. On March 7, the experiment was repeated with a mixture of 73.5% water and 26.5% No. -20 light diesel. The locomotive ran for 125 minutes, smoothly and normally. Compared to No. -20 light diesel, the fuel consumption decreased by 6.5% (the actual fuel savings rate was approximately 73.5% + 6.55 = 80%), and the average exhaust temperature of each cylinder decreased by 7.6°C, with the nominal speed increasing by 43.6% per minute. After the test, four injectors and two high-pressure oil pump plungers were inspected, and all were found to be in good technical condition. The conclusion was that 'Hongcheng's new energy can fully meet the needs of diesel locomotives and is superior to light diesel in important technical parameters such as power, fuel consumption, exhaust, and temperature.'"

At the end of the article, the two reporters wrote: "Some people still doubt Wang Hongcheng's research results because they have not been evaluated by national scientific research departments and hope that national scientific institutions will assess Wang Hongcheng's invention. This request is not excessive, but the question is who will conduct the evaluation, and this is not a matter for one or two people to decide."

"Attention should not only be paid to scientific experimental verification but also to practical production verification..."

Dinner with the elders was not late, it was only around 8 PM. After returning home and packing his things, Jia Hongjian took the bus back to school. As soon as he returned to the dormitory, Jia Jingxing and Zhao Ziyuan, surprised, surrounded him. "Uncle, the one who signed the Ma Junren secret formula is my great-uncle, right?" Jia Jingxing asked with a smug look.

Jia Hongjian nodded, and immediately Jia Jingxing proudly said to Zhao Ziyuan, "What do you think, Ziyuan? I told you it was my family who signed it, right?" Zhao Ziyuan, now as excited as if he had seen a big star, his eyes shining, exclaimed, "Brother Hongjian, your family is too awesome! You actually signed the secret formula. Are you going to make it into a health supplement and sell it? Can you give each of us classmates a box?"

Seeing Jia Hongjian nod in agreement, Zhao Ziyuan was even more delighted: "Damn! I can drink the special soup used by world champions! And the son of the company that makes the soup is my roommate! Hahaha, Brother Hongjian, can I show off to my neighbors?"

"No problem," Jia Hongjian smiled and nodded. He had chosen the strategy of scarcity marketing, expecting such consequences, and this scene was exactly what he wanted.

But at that moment, Yezi calmly entered the room with a basin. "Room leader, there's a call for you. It seems to be a long-distance call. The person wants you to answer quickly."

"Long-distance?" Jia Hongjian was taken aback. He didn't know many people who would urgently call him at his dormitory. Confused, he walked to the stairwell on the first floor and picked up the public phone. As soon as he did, he heard a familiar female voice.

"Jia Hongjian! Guess who I am?" A mischievous voice called out.

"Xiaofang?" Jia Hongjian deliberately called the wrong name, indulging in his mischief.

"Xiaofang? No! Guess again!" The mischievous female voice seemed a bit angry.

"Is it Xiaohong? Xiaohong, is that you? Oh, sorry, I guessed wrong..." Jia Hongjian deliberately continued his mischief.

"Another Xiaohong? Jia Hongjian, you! You! You, guess again!" The mischievous female voice was clearly getting angry, but she finally controlled her temper.

"Alright, Ye Jing, I can't come up with any more names. What with all the Xiaofangs and Xiaohongs, I've used up all my brain cells, and you still didn't fall for it..." Jia Hongjian, seeing that he had pushed the girl to her limit, stopped teasing her.

"Hmph, you finally guessed it? It's not because you used up all your brain cells, but because you finally remembered who I am. You must be busy playing with all the Xiaofangs and Xiaohongs, right? Hmph!" Ye Jing, the mischievous one, started to act up.

Jia Hongjian laughed and waited a moment before asking, "I was just teasing you. So, are you in China or in America now?"

Ye Jing looked out the window at the sunrise in Massachusetts and asked Jia Hongjian in a coquettish tone she didn't even realize she was using, "Guess?"

"I guess... America?"

"How did you guess?"

"I sent someone to follow you."

The two of them chatted randomly across the ocean, their voices traveling halfway around the world...

Note: The *Internal Reference Draft* is also known as the *Domestic Dynamics Draft*. It is generally published 1-2 times a day, reporting on major domestic events and high-level party instructions. It is classified as top secret but has a wider distribution than the *Internal Reference Supplement*. It was only made available to provincial leaders after 1987.

The article promoting the water-to-oil technology in this chapter originally appeared in the *Internal Reference Draft* on June 17, 1993.
