Chapter 13 – Rejection

Yu Xi was a little unhappy after seeing Jiang Jingbai and Tao Yitong at the company. After they returned to the apartment, Zhong Chen ordered some lunch for her but it was pushed away by Yu Xi. After kicking off her high heels, she nestled down into the couch with the script in her hands, expression gloomy.

Zhong Chen had followed Yu Xi ever since she debuted, so she still knows a thing or two about her. Whenever Yu Xi’s unhappy, her expression would only be agitated at most, so Zhong Chen had never seen her with this type of expression before.

This type of expression really makes people feel distressed for her.

Zhong Chen was very worried, her eyebrows scrunched together as she asked in a small voice, “Xixi, don’t think too much of it. How about we ask Bai-jie to switch a place to live?”

Yu Xi looked up at her, blinking, “There’s no need.”

“We don’t need to bother Bai-jie.”

Zhong Chen bit her lip, “Then let me go cut up some fruits for you. If you don’t eat anything, your stomach will hurt.”

Yu Xi paused for a few seconds, “Go help me clean up the room.”

“I want to go rest.”

Zhong Chen was at her wit’s end, “Okay.”

When she finished tidying up the room, Yu Xi has already changed into her pajamas.

Zhong Chen wanted to give a few more reassuring words but could only watch as Yu Xi walked into the room and closed the door without even glancing back once. She shrugged and walked over to the couch alone and sat down.

Yu Xi was lying in bed, thinking of the scene when the elevator opened. Jiang Jingbai and Tao Yitong stood shoulder to shoulder, looking like a good match.

But anyone pretty standing next to her would look like a good match with her, when she’s that pretty.

She’s truly a versatile women.

Yu Xi inclined her head back, her gaze scattered. Through the tightly sealed curtains, she seemed to recall a scene from back in high school.

It was midsummer and Jiang Jingbai was called into the teacher’s office after the morning reading. When she came back, she said she needed leave for two days to compete in the city essay competition. At the time, Yu Xi was completely unhappy but didn’t dare show any of it.

Because Jiang Jingbai had not accepted her yet.

Although she had already confessed to her many times before, Jiang Jingbai persisted in rejecting her.

Due to her family’s connections, the amount of pretty girls Yu Xi’s seen before are too many to count, and those with good grades aren’t only a few either. However, none of them were like Jiang Jingbai, because everything she did was pleasing to the eye.

Even if she didn’t do anything and just sat there.

Yu Xi thought about it for a long time, her face showing hesitation. Jiang Jingbai spoke, “Is it hard to answer?”

“Hard.”

“Because I like everything about you so I really can’t pinpoint out anything specific.”

Amused, Jiang Jingbai let out a smile. It was one of those gentle smiles, one that Yu Xi’s never seen her smile like before. Her heart was about to melt, her line of sight tightly on her, unwilling to look away.

After she chuckled lightly, she opened her mouth again, “Yu Xi, do you think we should be together?”

Yu Xi immediately nodded on the spot, she’s already lost count of how many times she’s asked her out before, so even if she added this one time, it wouldn’t matter. Making use of every opportunity, she said, “We should, we definitely should because we are a match made in heaven! We should be together!”

Like usual, Jiang Jingbai gave her a shallow smile. Shaking the ballpoint pen in her hands, her expression was serious when she raised her head, She said, “Yu Xi, if I get first place this time, let’s be together.”

All the blood in Yu Xi’s body immediately rushed to her forehead with a rumble!

The meaning in Jiang Jingbai’s words didn’t mean anything but one: let’s be together.

When Yu Xi woke up, it was already the next day morning. She woke up by someone knocking on the door. Her eyes felt sore and strained so ignoring the knocking, she ran over to the mirror first to check on her eyes. As she expected, her eyes were a little bit swollen but fortunately, it wasn’t too obvious and should go back down after applying ice.

Thinking about the heartbreak-filled trip she had down her memory lane yesterday, she really wanted to rip her head off and see if it’s filled with paste.

After this many years, she unexpectedly cried over her ex-girlfriend again, over such a scum of an ex-girlfriend on top of that. She really resented herself for not being able to meet up to her own expectations.

Yu Xi glared at the person in the mirror fiercely. Standing outside of the door, Zhong Chen’s voice was filled with concern, “Xixi, are you okay?”

Rushing straight to the bathroom after being woken up, even if Zhong Chen was thoughtless, she would realize something was wrong. Yesterday when Yu Xi said she was going to take a nap, she let her off to sleep and kept watch outside her door on the sofa but fell asleep too. When she woke up, it was already two at night. Worried, she went and knocked on Yu Xi’s door but no sounds came from inside. She quietly peeked in and saw Yu Xi still sleeping, so she put aside her worries and returned to the living room, staying awake until dawn.

She even thought that after Yu Xi slept for half a day and night, she would be filled with energy and feel refreshed, but who would’ve known that after waking up, the situation would become like this.

Thinking about how they met the new boss and Tao Yitong together, and then thinking about the trashed bag, Zhong Chen leaned against the door and shouted, “Xixi, don’t do anything stupid!”

“Don’t you dare leave the door shut!”

“Xixi, if you don’t come out, I’ll kick the door down!”

Zhong Chen had a fearless expression on her face, as if she was ready to do something righteous. As she closed her eyes and plucked up the courage to kick open the door, the bathroom door opened. Zhong Chen promptly pulled back and almost sprained her waist while doing so. She scanned Yu Xi from top to bottom and said in a small voice, “Xixi, are you okay?”

Yu Xi nodded, “Pretty good.”

Zhong Chen exhaled, “Then what were you doing inside for that long?”

Yu Xi glanced up at her, “Looking at the mirror.”

Zhong Chen, “……”

Yu Xi walked out two steps before saying, “Oh, right. Go grab me two ice packs.”

Zhong Chen was nervous again, “What is it, where did you get hurt?”

Yu Xi’s voice was clear, “It’s not that. I forgot to remove my makeup yesterday, so my eyes are slightly swollen.”

Zhong Chen, “……”

Knowing fully that she was speaking nonsense, Zhong Chen still very obediently prepared her an ice bag and waited for her to finish washing up so the ice could be applied on her eye. Yu Xi laid on the couch while Zhong Chen helped her grab a new bag. After putting in her phone and keys, she didn’t forget to place the script in the bag as well.

Squinting her eyes, Yu Xi asked, “Is it almost time yet?”

Zhong Chen looked down at her watch, “There’s still another hour. There’s no time to eat breakfast right now so I’ll buy you a little when we’re on the road.”

“Bai-jie said that Director Zhao dislikes people who are late the most, so she wanted us to leave ten minutes early.”

Yu Xi nodded, “Okay.”

She watched Zhong Chen’s bustling figure and pursed her lips together, “Did you sleep on the couch yesterday?”

She only moved in a short while ago and because there wouldn’t be anyone staying over, the guest room was never set up and was typically used as her closet instead. Zhong Chen honestly nodded in response to her question, “Yeah.”

Yu Xi was touched but she only raised her head like always, the ice wrapped inside a dry towel applied on her eye, and spoke softly, “Thanks.”

Hearing Yu Xi thank her so seriously, Zhong Chen was momentarily stupefied but immediately scratched her head and smiled very bashfully.

By the time Yu Xi was prepared to leave, she had already finished tidying everything for twenty minutes. She wore a sleeveless blue dress, the slim waist design squeezing her waist tightly. Under the skirt hem was a pair of long legs, the skin white and exquisite. Wearing high heels, her legs seemed even longer. Her calves in particular didn’t even have any excess fat, the lines perfect as if a fine carving.

Zhong Chen stood next to her side, urging her, “Xixi, we should leave now.”

After talking, she opened the door and stepped out first. There was someone standing outside the door. Zhong Chen froze for a few seconds and called out, “President Jiang.”

Yu Xi walked out in her high heels. When she saw Jiang Jingbai standing next to Zhong Chen, she pursed her lips together, “Good morning, President Jiang.”

Her expression was calm and gaze undisturbed. The moment Jiang Jingbai saw her, she was reminded of how she threw away the bag yesterday. She deliberately took half a step to the side and nodded, indicating for Yu Xi to enter the elevator first.

After Yu Xi entered, Zhong Chen didn’t dare move either. No matter how much of a jerk Jiang Jingbai is, she is still her boss. How could she enter first and make the boss wait? She stood outside the elevator, their two eyes staring at each other. The two fell in silence for a few seconds before Jiang Jingbai opened her mouth, “Go on in.”

After the command, Zhong Chen immediately entered the elevator without stopping.

In the elevator, Zhong Chen stood to the left of Yu Xi. Jiang Jingbai stood to the right, quiet and deep in thought.

Zhong Chen sneakily glanced over at the new boss out of the corner of her eyes. Jiang Jingbai was wearing a light-colored formal suit, her hair not styled, naturally black, long, and straight, flowing behind her back with a few strands resting atop of her chest. She swept her hair back and looked up, her expression indifferent like usual, only now her gaze occasionally flickered over to the person next to her.

Zhong Chen followed her gaze and looked over.

It was right on Yu Xi’s exquisite side profile.

Tch.

The new boss was watching Xixi?

Definitely a scum. They broke up because she was cheating in the relationship, but now that they’ve met up again, she’s still staring at Xixi. Zhong Chen felt apprehensive at heart before quietly nudging over a couple steps to Yu Xi’s right side. She looked up and straightened her back in attempt to block Jiang Jingbai’s line of sight.

Yu Xi watched Zhong Chen put up a protective stance before looking down again.

The elevator progressively lowered a floor one by one and before long, it reached the first floor. When they were about to leave the elevator, Zhong Chen received a phone call from the company saying that the car broke down on the road to the apartment, so it was on its way to get fixed now. Zhong Chen frowned. The car was the one the company assigned to them. If it was unable to pick them up, they could only call for a car to get to the company now.

Jiang Jingbai stood behind her, her voice shallow, “What is it?”

Zhong Chen glanced over at Yu Xi and then said honestly, “The driver said the car broke down so they can’t come anymore.”

Hearing her words, Yu Xi also slightly frowned, but before she said anything, Jiang Jingbai spoke first, “Get in my car, are you going to the company?”

Zhong Chen nodded and shook her head at the same time, “We are going to the company, but thank you President Jiang for your concern, we’ll call another car.”

Jiang Jingbai pursed her lips together.

Yu Xi very consciously put on her mask, sunglasses, and hat. Following behind Zhong Chen, she walked out of the lobby. Their distance with Jiang Jingbai was not that far, so she could hear their conversation.

“Why aren’t we getting in President Jiang’s car?”

It was Yu Xi who asked.

Zhong Chen coughed lightly and said very carefully, “I’m scared that after I get in, you’ll cut off my butt.”

Standing behind the two, Jiang Jingbai, “……”
