Cong Xia felt like he was patted in his sleep and he woke up. When he opened his eyes, he saw the cold face of Cheng Tianbi, which was very close right in front of his eyes. He was patting his face to wake him up. Cong Xia was stunned.
"You, you are okay?"
Cheng Tianbi said.
"Get up."
Despite his voice was still hoarse, Cong Xia could see that his face was no longer pale.
Cong Xia delightedly exclaimed and gave him a hug.
"Brother, you are really okay! You scared me to death."
Since the end of the world happened, this was the first time he felt happy from the bottom of his heart, he was smiling so bright that even his canine teeth were showing. Cheng Tianbi was caught off guard. The temperature of Cong Xia's body made him feel really comfortable, but he was not used to having physical contact with other people. When he woke up and found himself and a man whom he just met a few hours ago hugging each other, he felt really reluctant. Cheng Tianbi pushed him away.
"I told you to get up."
After finished talking, he turned his face away, bowed his head and went on to wear his shoes.
Cong Xia came closer, his head even touched Cheng Tianbi's cheek. He observed him for two seconds and could not help but smile.
"Are you shy?"
Cheng Tianbi tilted his head to glance at him.
"How long do you intend to keep talking nonsense?"
Cong Xia smiled.
"You are really something, for someone as handsome as you, you must have no shortage of friends since childhood. How can you be this autistic?"
Cheng Tianbi stood up and moved his limbs a little bit, even though his face was still somewhat peaky, his spirit didn't seem like of those who had just went through a near death experience. Cong Xia also jumped out of the bed.
"How long have we slept? At that time, you really scared me to death. Your whole body was like an ice cube. The wound must have been infected. Fortunately, you have overcome it, maybe is had something to do with your evolution."
Cheng Tianbi waved his arm a little bit, feeling that there was an inexplicable energy produced within his body, which made his body even lighter and full of spirit. When he formed a fist, he felt even more powerful. Every time he took a step, he could feel the strength of his thigh muscles. Even his vision was enhanced. The image got into his eyes was clean and clear as if it was washed by water. If you had to find an adjective for his current feeling, then it must be reborn.
Cong Xia had already got used to the fact that Cheng Tianbi wouldn't talk to him, but he couldn't stand two people not saying anything. The circumstance was enough to make people feel depressed, he didn't want to make his own mood more down, so even just by himself, he could still talk for quite a while.
"How are you feeling? Sill feel cold? I feel that the room is not that cold anymore, maybe the temperature has risen up. Are you still feeling uncomfortable now?"
"Hungry."
Cheng Tianbi touched the stomach, he felt extremely hungry.
"Hungry? Err... I'm going to see what else we can eat."
Cong Xia firmly went out of the bedroom, he then couldn't help but blurt out the F word.
Cheng Tianbi chased after him to have a look and ran into Cong Xia, who at the same time stepped back. He walked pass Cong Xia's shoulder and saw that the body of the monkey on the living room floor had begun to rot, its whole body was covered with squirming maggots, a smell which could make people vomit was all over the house.
No wonder why Cong Xia would feel disgusted. Cong Xia twisted his neck to not look at the floor.
"We only slept for four hours, only four hours."
Only four hours later and the body had already rotten to such extent that the house could no longer house anyone. Cheng Tianbi went over and picked up their backpacks.
"Put on your clothes, we're going out."
"You... You're not hungry? I'll give you something to eat."
"Eat what?"
Cong Xia gulped down his saliva.
"The things that were vacuum packed in the backpack, maybe there are still some that haven't gone bad."
"Go out and we talk later."
Cheng Tianbi reluctantly put on a coat that was obviously one or two sizes smaller, picked up things and went outside.
"Wait for me."
Cong Xia quickly grabbed the clothes, ran a few steps to be next to him and followed him closely, for he feared of being left behind. The two quickly went downstairs and Cheng Tianbi looked at the thermometer. As expected, the temperature was back to warm. Now the temperature was seventeen degrees. He was afraid that when it was the coldest, it must have dropped below zero. On the ground, the trace of bits and pieces of the hail had not completely evaporated yet, proving that just a few hours ago, during the hottest time of the year, there was a hail storm that had hails with the size of chicken eggs. Cong Xia said.
"Let's find a place to sit down and find something for you to eat. Don't stay hungry. I just ate so much meat, I am not hungry at all, you really get hungry quite fast."
Cheng Tianbi was so hungry that he was on the verge of being unable to endure it. He didn't know why he felt so hungry, but he didn't show it because he could hear some noises around him. He needed to find a safe place to eat once again.
The two walked out of the community and found that the number of pedestrians on the road was much more. It was past four in the afternoon at the moment, it just passed 24 hours since the earthquake in Golmud occurred, and this former civilized society had become a complete mess.
Just a few hours after they slept, the grocery stores, small supermarkets and fruit stalls on both sides of the street were all vandalized. When they passed by, they could see the food already being looted, but most of the food was untouched, because it was already spoiled, the two also wanted to go in and try their luck, and see if there was anything left to eat. As the result, after going around, the only things that were still not spoiled were the incense and water, which could not be consumed. The two took a few bottles of water and continued to move forward in disappointment.
There were two cars, one was in front and the other was behind, rushing here from the other side of the street. The car behind seemed to be chasing the car in front. The two cars were swaying as they moved forward. When they saw that those cars would hit the sidewalk, Cheng Tianbi quickly grabbed Cong Xia and pulled him to the side.
The car in front slammed into the trash can on the side of the road, the engine was off. There were three young and strong men getting out from the car behind. They approached, kicked and slammed at the car door. After the door was opened, they pulled out from the inside of the car a few boxes of sealed cookie jars. The people in the car in front also rushed to get off. There were men and women, and the two groups got into a fight because of a few jars of biscuits.
Cong Xia's eyes widened as he looked at this scene, his heart was filled with sadness.
In just one day, most of the things that had not been vacuumed and frozen had deteriorated. The speed of bacterial evolution was extremely fierce, it did not only accelerate reproduction, but also adapted to low temperature. It was not difficult to imagine that it would not be long til even the last barrier, which was vacuum, would also be infiltrated. Food at the moment was the biggest crisis everyone was facing.
From the shops that were vandalized on the road to the people who were fighting with each other just for a few jars of biscuits, Cong Xia realized that the idea of him wanting to find some food for Cheng Tianbi to eat was so naive.
Now he couldn't call it 'finding food' anymore, most people had already started to fight for it. Cong Xia grabbed Cheng Tianbi.
"Let's go, quickly."
They still had some food in their backpacks, what if after these people finished their fight, they turned their attention on them. Cheng Tianbi looked at the jars of biscuits and his eyes became rather dark. Cong Xia urged him.
"Let's go, let's find a hidden place to eat."
When he said this, he forced his volume to be very low, for he feared that others would know. Cheng Tianbi looked down at the military uniform on his body, he then stopped looking and followed Cong Xia.
The two walked across two streets and found a small supermarket that was vandalized and hid in there. The goods in the supermarket were scattered all over the place, it looked unbearably messy. While walking inside, Cong Xia was also paying attention to the feet, in an unrealistic hope that he could find something that could be eaten.
Although he was not hungry now, he was very worried when he thought about Cheng Tianbi being hungry. In his heart, he had already considered Cheng Tianbi as his companion. Because of his timidity, he even had a sense of dependence on Cheng Tianbi. He knew that if he wanted to go to Beijing to seek shelter from his second uncle, relying on just a weak chicken like him was impossible. Only if he followed Cheng Tianbi that he had a chance to survive.
The two chose a clean corner to sit down. Cong Xia's bottom was not even stably landed on the ground and he already heard a piercing scream. A mouse as big as a human head jumped towards his legs. Cong Xia was terrified. He immediately stood up and subconsciously leaned towards Cheng Tianbi.
Cheng Tianbi quickly took out the military knife and stabbed it towards the mouse. Unfortunately, the mouse was very flexible and fast, just in a short time, there was no trace of it. Cheng Tianbi put away the knife, he looked rather disappointed. Cold sweat appeared on Cong Xia's face.
"We are not that hungry to eat the mouse, aren't we?"
"For now, not yet, but after three days, you wait and see."
Cong Xia shivered. He couldn't imagine that one day, they would have to fight just to eat a mouse. He opened the backpack, took out swollen food bags. He still had not given up and opened the big bag. He wanted to smell to see if they could still be consumed. As a result, he smelled a rancid smell that almost made him faint.
Cheng Tianbi threw all the swollen bags away and picked out a bag of bacon that was still perfectly vacuum packed. After tearing it, he ferociously took a bite, it looked like he was really hungry. Cong Xia found a bottle of water, removed the lid and handed it to him.
"Don't eat too fast, this is very salty."
Cheng Tianbi gulped down his saliva and continued to bite and tear the bacon.
The bacon was really salty and heavy, but at this point he couldn't be picky. His stomach seemed like a bottomless pit. It desperately needed to be replenished with food. He was so hungry that he began to lose his mind. It was not like someone who had just eaten just a few hours ago but more like someone who was already hungry for three days. Cong Xia also realized this abnormal situation.
"Do you think you being this hungry has anything to do with your evolution?"
Cheng Tianbi said.
"Definitely be related."
It was hard to stuff a bag of bacon into the stomach. Cheng Tianbi drank two bottles of water. Although he still felt hungry, he restrained his desire to continue to eat, this meat was too salty, it would affect his next move. Cong Xia had been watching him eating, he handed him water and quietly asked.
"Are you full?"
Cheng Tianbi looked at his watch.
"We have delayed too much time, let's go."
"You only had a bag of food. Is it really enough? Eat some more."
"No, it's too salty."
Cheng Tianbi frowned.
"We can't drag it out any longer, we must hurry to the airport."
Cong Xia sighed.
"I hope when we're in Beijing, there will be fresh food."
Cheng Tianbi did not speak, but he also hoped that he could get on the plane as soon as possible to leave here. The two were looking forward to the fresh food of the capital and once again returned to the road.
