“This is… incredible.”
“Eh…?”
I could not properly hear her words, but the tone indicated that she was surprised. In response, I looked down at the floor.
“Oh dear, why do you look so gloomy? This is beautiful and it looks amazing.”
Since I had always been treated as an unwanted child, that compliment made me feel incredible.
After I finished handing out the bags, I started mending my clothes during my free time. I used models that I learned in my previous life to make them comfortable and allow for easier movement.
The reason I did this in the workshop and not in my room was that I had a needle and my spider, but no scissors.
In the other house, I used the spider’s thread to indicate the position where the fabric should be cut, but I never actually cut any clothes. I never really understood the reason, but any fabric I occupied was prepared beforehand. They might have been afraid that I would destroy the clothes in that workshop in retaliation. Of course, I would never have done anything like that, but I can’t do much about people’s prejudices… But if I’d had a pair of scissors back then, I could have repaired the clothes that were crudely designed or unbalanced.
It wasn’t until I wanted to make the sachets that I realised I didn’t have my scissors. When I asked permission to use the ones from the workshop, I was told that there was no problem and that I could even take them to another room, but I decided to leave them there and use them during my free time.
“Leaving aside the scented sachets, I never thought I could darn dresses or shirts without a measuring tape.”
“Measuring tape?” muttered my friendly-looking senior, Leine, “You mean this?” She pulled out a leather bag and showed me what was inside. “This red thread here is the length of the shoulders, the blue thread is the length of one arm and this is for the circumference of the arm…”
It’s amazing, I thought when I saw that.
“It’s common to measure the size of customers with threads like this, and then mark the fabric and cut it.”
This was what was used instead of the paper patterns. That seemed too laborious. Also, now that I knew this, it was more than likely that many of the clothes I had to fix were due to some tailor or seamstress having incorrectly measured a piece of fabric.
Using the paper patterns was easier. However, the only paper I had seen in this world was used to make official documents and print books. Moreover, I doubted that it would be possible to make a piece of paper large enough to make a design for a dress.
But, when I made the scented sachets, I realized something. I was able to cut the fabric to the size I wanted. I was able to cut several pieces of cloth without having to measure them even once. It was as if my body knew beforehand what I needed at that moment and, just by imagining the final product, I could create it without any hitches.
This was something that surprised me greatly.
“So, umm, do you think, umm, do you think I’m strange?”
My voice improved a lot thanks to the food and care I had received in this place, now one could hear what I was saying if there wasn’t much noise around. However, at that moment, my voice faltered.
“In fact… I think you are amazing. Your speed in cutting and darning the cloth is amazing and as far as I know, you also practice during your free time, right? It’s amazing that until a few seconds ago you didn’t know about the existence of measuring threads…”
Seeing auntie Leine so distracted, I couldn’t help but feel a little nervous.
“It’s just that, umm, I got your help.”
The pin needles. If Leine had not shown me that pin needles also existed in this world, my work would have been much more difficult.
“Ah, that hardly counts as help. I’ve seen your work firsthand, Ewey. Your dresses were so beautiful that any trace of jealousy I felt at first, disappeared instantly.”
Leine patted me on the head as she said this and I immediately felt my cheeks blushing.
“Umm, I like your work too, auntie. Your clothes are always so comfortable and fluffy…”
“My goodness, you’re so cute!”
She said as she held me tightly. We were both embarrassed now.
Auntie Leine’s hug was warm and gentle, was that what it felt like to be held by a mother? It was something completely different to what I had felt before, I wouldn’t have minded staying like that a little longer.
In the Nylle family, it was the job of the servants to raise the children, unfortunately, all those who worked in that house were soulless lowlifes… and I didn’t like to get close to my mother because she reeked of perfume and make-up products.
I was happy that I was brought into this house and that auntie Leine was my senior.
While we were in that moving moment, Skul-sama entered the workshop. Four invisible, well-dressed spirits were floating around him.
Leine explained to me that he rarely visited the Roden family mansion…besides, he was Urde’s husband, who works as the head butler in this place…while she explained this to me I couldn’t take my eyes off the little spirits that were floating around.
The spirits had delicate features and also had very distinctive features, some had beautiful white feathers, others had ears and tails of cats, rabbits, or dogs. They were beautiful.
Right next to Skul-sama were some small spirits with cat ears that were wrapped in what appeared to be green cotton. It was as if I was watching some kittens playing with balls of green thread, it was quite adorable.
There were other spirits comfortably huddled on Skul-sama’s shoulders and head, some had black, red clothes and there was even one that had a small green shadow that made him look like a cartoon character.
Suddenly, Skul-sama took one of the spirits he had on his shoulder and placed it in front of me. That took me by surprise. Could I play with that cute little being?
When I raised my hands to receive the spirit that Skul-sama had placed in front of me, the people around me gasped in surprise.
“Ewey… can you see the spirit?”
“Yes.”
Now that I thought about it, Skul-sama also seemed to be able to see the spirits.
Moreover, I had focused so much on the beauty of the spirits around me, that I had not realized that I had at that moment divulged the fact that I could see them too.
