EP.32 A Three-Week Vacation - 3

The train began to rattle more violently than when it started.

The vibration seemed to be complaining and grumbling, as if the train itself was heading deep into the countryside.

“...U...n...?”

The grumbling of the stubborn locomotive made Leo’s head and eyelids tremble.

When the vibration grew even stronger, his half-closed eyelids suddenly opened wide.

“Are you awake, Leo?”

“...Y...Yes?”

With a drowsy expression, Leo looked at Aria, appearing a bit flustered.

“Ah... I’m sorry. I must have fallen asleep leaning against the window.”

“Oh, no! It’s fine!! Leo must be very tired...!! You can lean and sleep whenever you want!!”

Though grateful, Leo knew he couldn’t do that.

As a knight, he couldn’t impose on a lady.

“Which station is this? Are we still far?”

“We’re at Dabins Station, so it’s still a while to Doron...”

“Huh? Dabins?”

Upon hearing the name of the station, Leo quickly asked back. Aria, taken aback by his sudden reaction, replied with a puzzled tone.

“Yeah, I said Dabins Station... Is there a problem...”

Once he confirmed, Leo hurriedly started to gather his bag and luggage.

“I need to get off quickly!”

“Eh...? Why...”

“To get to Doron, you have to get off at Dabins Station. There’s no direct train to Doron!”

Doron was one of the most remote villages in the countryside. If there were no poorly built houses or buildings, it might as well be in the middle of a forest.

<Master! Hurry up and come!>

[What? Why? I’m watching an important scene right now.]

Is there even such a thing as an important scene on a train? This reminded Leo of what kind of person the Master was.

<Forget it, hurry up and come. You need to get off.]

[But we haven’t even reached Doron Station yet?]

After a two-second explanation, the Master also got off the train.

Thinking about how they almost missed the stop and had to beg the station attendant to stop the train, Leo still felt a bit guilty.

“Finally... we got off...”

Once they managed to get off the platform, Leo let out a sigh of relief. If they had been late, they would have had to walk back over 3 km along the railway.

[You should have checked better.]

<...I’m sorry.>

This was something that even Aria and the Master couldn’t blame him for. Only Leo knew that there was no direct train to Doron.

<But what did you see on the train that made you so late?>

Could it be that he was looking for something that could lead to a lawsuit over patents and copyrights?

[I just read a melodramatic novel. In another first-class carriage, I saw a pentangle relationship for the first time in over 300 years...]

<...I don’t want to hear it.>

No matter how much mental fortitude Leo had to endure the Master’s quirks, he was always weak when it came to love triangles.

“So... where do we go now?”

Aria, with her eyes sparkling excitedly, had the expression of a girl her age. After all, this remote countryside was a new sight for her, and she must have found it quite interesting.

“We can’t take a carriage; we have to walk.”

Leo explained this while pointing to the mountain connected by green vegetation with his index finger.

“We can’t take a carriage?”

Aria, following Leo, asked while looking around. Although it was a rural area, Dabins Station had dozens of carriages running.

So, her question wasn’t that strange.

“The road is too rough for carriages. Even if the coachmen were paid double, they wouldn’t go.”

The unpaved, bumpy dirt road, with scattered rocks, tree roots, and added potholes and mud, would likely cost more in carriage wheel repairs than the fare.

“Then let’s get going.”

Leo smiled slightly as he headed towards the village. It was his hometown, which he hadn’t visited in a year, so it was only natural.

***

[But you know, you’re going because the village chief is sick.]

<That’s right.>

[Then why are you giggling? Did you want the village chief to be in trouble?]

This guy always talks like this.

I’ve heard of giggling, but this is the first time I’ve heard of giggling.

<Am I some kind of Master?>

[Then what are you?]

<The village chief is healthy. In my previous life, I never returned here.>

[...What?]

The village chief lived a healthy life until Leo became an adult. While he did have some minor illnesses, about half of the letters were about colds or other minor ailments.

[Then why are you going?]

<Well, I need to pay respects and see the people of my hometown after a long time.>

In my previous life, I hardly ever returned to my hometown. After meeting Aria, I even reduced the number of times I paid respects.

[You were a bit of a filial delinquent.]

<You can call me a filial delinquent or a disobedient son; it’s the truth.>

Leo would use any means to win against Aria. If he had to, he would use dark magic or mana.

He reduced the number of times he paid respects to his parents and almost cut off contact with his hometown. When he last visited, the villagers thought he was dead.

So, now that he has returned, he is trying to make up for his past regrets.

[...If you admit it, I become the trash.]

<Oh? Wasn’t it? >

[Yeah, I’m the root of all evil. Just like that.]

<It’s good that you finally realize it. Be good from now on. Oh, you’re already dead.>

The Master, seemingly shocked by the extreme verbal attack, fell silent.

“But how far do we have to go, Leo?”

Aria, not breaking a sweat, asked as they climbed the hill, seemingly out of curiosity rather than fatigue. The repetitive scenery likely made her feel bored.

“At this point, we should be near the village. So...”

Rustle

The sound of rustling bushes.

It was similar to the sound of the wind, but clearly of a different nature.

At the sound, Leo drew his sword. The bracelet-like stone transformed into a sword.

“Leo...!?”

Clang!

A flying dagger was deflected by Leo’s sword.

“An attack...!?”

Before Aria could react in shock, a black figure leaped out from the bushes. With a body like a predator in the forest, covered in black fur, the hunter lunged forward.

Clang!!

Blade and claw clashed.

It wasn’t the dagger that had flown earlier, but the claws, known as the exclusive weapon of beasts, that met the sword head-on.

“...A human...a wolf...?”

The hunter was a human with the form of a wolf.

“Who are you...! You’re the scoundrel who abandoned the village and went to the capital!”

It was a werewolf.

“Can you even call yourself a scoundrel with that face?!”

Leo shouted as he parried the werewolf’s attack.

The white claws and black blade trembled, pushing and pulling each other. If more force were applied, one of them would surely be injured.

Clang!!

“Get your hands off Leo...!”

At that moment, Aria charged forward, displaying her strength. Her kick was enough to send the black beast hunter flying and impale him on a rock.

“Are you okay? Le...!”

“Din! Big brother!”

When Aria looked at him with relief, Leo stared at his companion and brother in shock.

“Big brother...?”

[You’re not dead?!]

Leo rushed to Din.

Din Hounds, the werewolf.

He was the village’s guardian and

at the same time, Leo’s close older brother.

***

“I’m really sorry!! I really am!! I kicked without thinking...!”

“It’s okay... Miss... My jaw seems a bit dislocated, but there doesn’t seem to be any other problem...”

From what Din said, it didn’t seem to be just a bit, but Leo didn’t correct him.

After all, with a werewolf’s vitality, the bone would heal quickly.

“From your reaction... Miss, is this your first time seeing a werewolf?”

Aria, who had been bowing her head, glanced at Din’s body with her eyes. Given his particularly distinctive appearance, it was natural for her to be curious.

“...Ah, yes... I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay. That’s a good reaction. Besides, I started the fight, so you don’t need to be so submissive.”

“That’s true, but in the end, it was my fault for fighting with Big Brother.”

Snap!

“Ouch! Why did you hit me?!”

Din, holding his broken jaw, hit Leo on the head.

“You need to reflect! If you had explained earlier, my face wouldn’t be like this!”

“It doesn’t matter. From a distance, there’s no difference.”

Smack!

The punch landed again. Being hit in the same spot repeatedly, the shock seemed to reach his brain.

“Is that what you call talking!”

Din and Leo always had a few rounds of fist or blade fighting whenever they entered the village.

You can think of it as a kind of greeting ceremony.

[To be honest, Aria is the victim, and you two are the perpetrators. You should have been more careful.]

With a dazed head, Leo had no time to argue. After rubbing his head a few times, he regained his ability to speak.

“Anyway, welcome to Doron. Your name... it’s...”

Aria, maintaining her manners, gave a polite greeting. Her beauty shone even more with the proper etiquette.

“Pleased to meet you. My name is Ariasphil Reinhardt.”

“Oh, right. Nice to meet you. Ariasphil... Reinhardt...?”

Din, about to shake hands, felt his hand become sweaty.

“...Reinhardt?”

The moisture was so intense that his thick fur was damp and drooping.

“...The hero family...?”

“...Ah, yes.”

“So, the family that defeated the Demon King?”

Aria nodded.

“Yes, the first hero, Ruben Reinhardt, defeated the Demon King.”

“...Ah...”

Din momentarily withdrew his hand and stepped back from Aria.

“I’m so sorryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy
