The Lunar New Year was fast approaching. Xia Xingcheng received a call from his mom asking when he would be coming home. After working for so many years, he wasn’t able to make it back every year for the Spring Festival but as long as he had time, he would still go back to his hometown to spend the New Year with his parents and big brother.
This year was somewhat special. He not only wanted to go back home, but he also wanted to spend New Year’s with Yang Youming.
After the phone call with his mother, Xia Xingcheng found Yang Youming who was in the middle of watching a movie in his home theatre. He sat down beside him and asked, “Ming ge, what are your plans for the Lunar New Year?”
A foreign movie was playing on the projector screen. Yang Youming took the remote and pressed pause before facing Xia Xingcheng and saying, “I don’t have anything planned.”
Both of Yang Youming’s parents had already passed away. His father fell ill and passed when he was in elementary school, and his mother also died of illness the year he started working. He still had an old house in his hometown and relatives there who he would visit now and then, but he doesn’t go back every year.
In the past two years, Yang Youming still had Yuan Qian by his side. If Xia Xingcheng left, then he’d be all alone this year.
The room was not too large, the four walls were soundproofed, and it was always particularly quiet. None of the lights were on at this moment, and the only source of light was the screen, illuminating Yang Youming’s face.
Yang Youming said, “Are you going home?”
Xia Xingcheng answered, “Mm.”
Yang Youming bent one leg over the wide sofa, his body slumped against the back of the chair, and said, “It’s only right to go back and spend time with your loved ones during the New Year.”
Xia Xingcheng raised his hand and clutched at his hair, leaving it in a mess. His head then thumped on Yang Youming’s chest, knocking his forehead so hard that it ached, and his face pressed against the man’s chest as he looked at him from below. “You…” He got this one word out but the rest was vaguely stuck in his throat and ended up sounding like whimpering gibberish.
Yang Youming raised his hand and gently caressed the hair on the back of Xia Xingcheng’s head. He gazed down at him and said, “If you have something to say, say it clearly.”
Xia Xingcheng plucked up his courage and said, “Will you come home with me for the Lunar New Year?”
Yang Youming’s hand suddenly came to a halt, and he stared at Xia Xingcheng for a moment before asking, “What am I going home with you as?”
Originally, Xia Xingcheng was ready for a rejection, but when hearing that Yang Youming didn’t readily turn him down, he immediately got up off Yang Youming’s chest and sat up straight, facing the man and quickly saying, “A friend! I brought my university classmates home during summer vacation before. You don’t need to worry, my parents are very welcoming.”
Yang Youming asked, “Is now an appropriate time? It’s not summer vacation, it’s the New Year.”
Without batting an eyelid, Xia Xincheng replied, “How is it not appropriate? If my mom knew that Yang Youming is coming home with me for the New Year, she might go crazy!”
Yang Youming laughed at that, “What? Your mom likes me a lot, huh?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “Of course! By then my mom would probably be dying to take a picture with you to frame and hang in the living room.”
Chuckling, Yang Youming said, “Then it’d be my honour.”
Xia Xingcheng had listened to him for a long time yet still hadn’t heard a positive answer, so he carefully asked once again, “Are you going?”
Yang Youming answered, “I’ll think about it.”
Xia Xingcheng constantly wondered where Yang Youming’s thoughts would lead.
That day, he slept until the middle of the night when he suddenly turned over and abruptly remembered this matter, and his head cleared up in an instant. He then leaned closer to look at Yang Youming in the dark.
Yang Youming’s eyes were closed and he was breathing quietly. Xia Xingcheng didn’t know if he was asleep. He approached his ear and whispered, “Ming ge.”
Then, he saw Yang Youming open his eyes.
Yang Youming was lying flat on his back, motionless, his eyes opened as he stared at Xia Xingcheng. His brows slightly furrowed as he asked, “What time is it?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “I don’t know.”
Yang Youming then turned over and reached for his phone.
Xia Xingcheng glanced at the bright phone as Yang Youming pressed on it and found that it wasn’t even six a.m. yet.
Yang Youming didn’t seem to be quite awake. A deep and slightly husky voice came out of his throat. “Can’t sleep?”
Xia Xingcheng had been awake, and hearing Yang Youming speak like this was like being seduced, and he said “Don’t sleep, shall we do it?”
Yang Youming’s face was hazy with sleep. Halfway through a yawn, he heard Xia Xingcheng say this and suddenly burst out laughing.
Xia Xingcheng lifted the quilt and got under it, and soon buried his head between the man’s legs.
Yang Youming couldn’t help but raise his head and close his eyes. He hadn’t yet completely gotten rid of his drowsiness, but he felt so good that his breathing became more erratic and his prominent Adam’s apple rolled up and down.
Later, he held Xia Xingcheng in his arms. He lay on his side as he entered him from behind and asked in his ear, “You want me to come home with you so much?”
Xia Xingcheng closed his eyes and moaned softly, and said in an unstable voice, “I want—want to be with you on the last day of the year, and with you… on the first day of the new year.”
Yang Youming raised his hand to turn Xia Xincheng’s face and kiss his lips heavily, then said in a rough voice, “I’ll go home with you.”
After, Xia Xingcheng slept until it was almost noon before he got up and called Huang Jixin, asking him to book two flight tickets for him as Yang Youming wanted to go home with him for the New Year.
Huang Jixin didn’t object and booked the tickets for the two of them with great efficiency.
Yet once Xia Xingcheng received the flight information, he realized that Huang Jixin had booked tickets for both of them for the same day and time, but on different flights.
This was Huang Jixin expressing his silent protest.
Xia Xingcheng called home again to say that he was bringing a friend home for the New Year.
Mama Xia’s first thought was that he was bringing his girlfriend back.
Xia Xingcheng said over the phone, “Not a girlfriend, but a very important friend. You should tell the family to prepare to receive a guest.”
When Mama Xia heard it wasn’t a girlfriend, her tone immediately dropped half a pitch, “What kind of friend is so amazing? And prepare to receive a guest?”
Xia Xingcheng stressed, “Just—really amazing! You’ll know when you see him.”
When they departed, they each went to the airport without an assistant and took the plane separately.
Xia Xingcheng’s plane arrived first. He wore a mask and hat to cover himself completely, pushing his suitcase out of the arrival gate alone. He would meet people who stared at him from time to time along the way, but no one came up to him.
When he came out of the arrival gate, Xia Xingcheng saw a familiar tall figure standing in a distant corner. He was afraid of attracting people’s attention and suppressed his excitement until he reached that person, then he shouted in a low voice, “Ge!”
The tall man looked him over and raised his hand to hug him, patting his back with vigor.
Xia Xingcheng’s big brother was ten years older than him, and his name was Xia Ye. His name was obtained in a very simple way; their father’s surname was Xia, and their mother’s surname was Ye. When they had their second son, they couldn’t afford to be so lazy and come up with a similar name, therefore, Xia Xingcheng was born.
Xia Ye wore a black sweater under a wrinkled down jacket, and his hair was cut so short that he appeared a little rough, like he didn’t really care about how he was dressed. But his face was seven to eight points similar to Xia Xingcheng’s. His features were a little more robust than Xia Xingcheng’s, and his whole person was upright and handsome.
It had been a year since the two brothers last saw each other. Xia Ye carefully took in the sight of his younger brother, then asked him, “Where’s your friend?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “He hasn’t arrived yet, he should be half an hour late.”
Xia Ye looked towards the arrival gate, but Xia Xingcheng pulled him away and said, “He’ll go through the VIP gate later, we’ll drive the car to the VIP parking lot and he’ll get in right as he comes out.”
“What kind of person did you invite home ah?” Xia Ye frowned, “A big star? More popular than you?” He’s never paid attention to the entertainment industry. Every star could only be classified into two categories in his eyes: those who were more popular than his brother, and those who were less popular than his brother.
Xia Xingcheng pulled at him as he headed outside and said, “He’s much much more popular than me. You should be polite to him, no rudeness allowed.”
Xia Ye was a little unhappy.
He couldn’t study, so his family sent him to join the army before he even finished high school, and he’s been doing business ever since his discharge. Xia Xingcheng would sometimes ask him to not be too crude, and Xia Ye has never been too happy about this. However, his younger brother was his precious younger brother, and his anger was nothing but a silent seething that would vanish into thin air in the span of two minutes.
Exiting the arrival hall and reaching the parking lot, Xia Ye put Xia Xingcheng’s suitcase into the trunk of his BMW then told him not to hurry and that he wanted to smoke first.
Xia Xingcheng urged him, “Hurry up, Ming ge has arrived.”
Xia Ye deliberately slowed down. He said, “What big star is so great, it’s not like he’ll die waiting.”
Xia Xingcheng glared at him.
