Later on, Xia Xingcheng called Fang Ying again.
Fang Ying told him that in addition to coming over to visit him, they had also wanted to take advantage of the holidays to travel with Ding Ding and Dong Dong, so they wouldn’t be going back for the time being. Moreover, she had also persuaded Xia Ye to stay at Xia Xingcheng’s house for a few days in lieu of returning to the hotel.
Xia Xingcheng said, “Sis-in-law, it’s two days to New Year’s Eve. How about you and my brother bring Ding Ding and Dong Dong over to celebrate the Lunar New Year here with us?”
Fang Ying was taken aback for a moment. She then softened her voice and asked, “At Yang Youming’s house?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “Mm, that’s what Ming ge has in mind too.”
Fang Ying slightly hesitated before saying, “I’ll go ask your brother first and get back to you after.”
Originally, Xia Xingcheng had made a deal with Yang Youming to spend the Lunar New Year abroad, but because of Xia Ye’s unexpected visit that also resulted in Yang Youming’s face getting injured, they ultimately decided on not going out for the time being. Xia Xingcheng would wait for his parents to return home after the New Year before going back himself.
Consequently, Yang Youming had then asked Xia Xingcheng whether he wanted to celebrate the New Year with his big brother’s family.
When Fang Ying called Xia Xingcheng that night, she seemed somewhat peeved. “Your brother’s not coming. I’ll bring Ding Ding and Dong Dong over. He can spend the New Year alone for all I care.”
Xia Xingcheng surmised that Fang Ying and Xia Ye must’ve fought again. There was nothing he could do about his big brother’s bad temper either, so he only said, “Then I’ll pick you guys up in the afternoon. Wait for my call.”
On New Year’s Eve, when Xia Xingcheng drove over to pick up Fang Ying and the kids, Xia Ye really refused to come out, so only Fang Ying, Ding Ding, and Dong Dong got into the car.
Xia Xingcheng asked, “Is my brother mad?”
Fang Ying said, “Don’t mind him. While he’s off being angry, we’ll be celebrating the New Year.”
Ding Ding jumped about in the car, seemingly overjoyed. “We’re going to celebrate the New Year~”
While holding him down, Fang Ying said, “There’s still instant noodles at home. Since he won’t come, then he can take care of tonight’s dinner by himself. So spoiled, that man!”
Xia Xingcheng feebly glanced out at the tall buildings in the neighbourhood, then made a U-turn and drove away.
When they arrived home, as Xia Xingcheng entered the door’s passcode, Fang Ying, Ding Ding, and Dong Dong all appeared somewhat excited. Fang Ying whispered to Xia Xingcheng, “This is my first time visiting such a big star’s house.”
Xia Xingcheng turned his head and smiled at Fang Ying. “The place is pretty simple, there’s not much decor.”
The moment the door opened with a click, Ding Ding tried to scamper around Xia Xingcheng’s legs to enter the house. Fang Ying promptly grabbed the small hood of Ding Ding’s down jacket. “No running! Be good and follow mommy!”
Dong Dong was much more reserved. Clutching at the hem of Fang Ying’s coat, he looked up at the interior of the house and peered around.
Xia Xingcheng invited them in.
Yang Youming came out from the kitchen and greeted the guests when he heard the noise. He was wearing loose, casual home clothes, slippers under his feet, and an apron wrapped around his body. He showed a gentle smile when he spotted Fang Ying and the others.
Fang Ying glanced over and noted that the injury on his face really did look somewhat frightful. In fact, it was no longer that swollen anymore, but the colouring was beginning to purple. The corner of his mouth was a little crooked from it, and one of his eyes was clearly a little narrower than the other. Seeing such a good-looking face hurt like this, Fang Ying felt genuinely apologetic, and she apologized to Yang Youming on behalf of Xia Ye.
Yang Youming shook his head. “No matter, come and have a seat.”
Fang Ying led Ding Ding and Dong Dong into the living room. Dong Dong behaved well, yet Ding Ding kept wanting to run around. She had no other choice but to hold onto him with one hand and sat him down on the sofa first.
Yang Youming chatted with Fang Ying for a few minutes, then went back to the kitchen to fetch the washed fruits. In addition to the plump, bright red cherries and strawberries, there was also a plate of pineapples.
“Wow!” Ding Ding exclaimed. Dong Dong immediately followed suit.
Fang Ying took them to the bathroom to wash their hands before allowing them to eat the fruit.
“Xingcheng will stay here and keep you all company. I’m going to prepare dinner,” Yang Youming said to Fang Ying.
Fang Ying hurriedly said, “Sorry for the trouble.”
When Yang Youming left for the kitchen, Fang Ying whispered to Xia Xingcheng, “Does Yang Youming do all the cooking at home?”
Xia Xingcheng was sitting across Fang Ying. He picked up a strawberry. “I don’t know how to.”
Fang Ying shot a glance towards the kitchen, and said, “It feels like we’ve given you guys a lot of trouble.”
Smiling, Xia Xingcheng said, “It’s no trouble. I think Ming ge’s pretty happy. He’s never had so many guests over for the New Year. He was afraid that the supermarket would close early today, so he went and bought the fruits and vegetables yesterday–he even discussed what dishes he should make today with me last night.”
Fang Ying laughed as she listened. She lowered her voice, then leaned over to Xia Xingcheng and asked, “Is Yang Youming very good to you?”
The strawberry Xia Xingcheng had nabbed earlier was still in his hand. He plucked its leaves off, unable to keep down a smile. “Of course.”
Ding Ding and Dong Dong ate fruits for a while. Soon after, they started horsing around. Fang Ying wanted to stop them, but Xia Xingcheng said it was fine, there was nothing important in the room, so let them play. Thus, Fang Ying let them be.
Dong Dong ran into the kitchen. Upon seeing Yang Youming cutting vegetables, he stood on his tiptoes to peek at the chopping board.
Yang Youming took a slice of braised beef and asked Dong Dong, “Want to have a taste?”
Dong Dong nodded shyly.
Yang Youming bent down and brought the beef to Dong Dong’s mouth.
Dong Dong opened his little mouth and bit into the beef, then swallowed all of it into his mouth.
Yang Youming watched him chew the beef energetically and asked, “Is it tasty?”
Dong Dong bobbed his head bashfully.
Yang Youming wanted to pat his head, but remembered that his hands were still oily, so he smiled at him instead and said, “Go and play with your brother, you can have dinner in a bit.”
Dong Dong scurried away. When he got to the kitchen doorway, he hugged the door frame and craned his neck to stare at Yang Youming for a while before turning around and running off.
Right before dinner, Xia Ye called Fang Ying and said that he was willing to come over for dinner.
As a result, Xia Xingcheng put on his coat and quickly drove off again to pick up Xia Ye.
Xia Ye stood at the entrance of the neighborhood with a cigarette between his lips and his arms in his pockets, waiting for him with a blank face.
Xia Xingcheng stopped the car in front of him, lowered the car window, and unlocked the door, then said, “Get in!”
Xia Ye’s brows narrowed. He took a long drag of his cigarette, then threw the cigarette butt on the ground before opening the door and getting into Xia Xingcheng’s car.
The moment he sat down, Xia Xingcheng said to him, “Don’t litter. Go pick it up.”
Xia Ye glared at him fiercely for two seconds before he stepped out of the vehicle on two long legs to pick up the cigarette butt on the curb. He jogged a small distance to throw it into the rubbish bin before he got into the car again.
Xia Xingcheng didn’t drive right away. He sat there on the driver’s seat and watched Xia Ye put his seatbelt on, and said, “It’s the New Year tonight. Everyone’s going to enjoy a meal, so if you’re only looking for trouble, then don’t bother going.”
Xia Ye sneered. “What trouble am I looking for?”
A bout of anger overcame Xia Xingcheng. “You punched Ming ge’s face! What did you think that was?!”
Xia Ye said, “Who told him to touch my little brother!”
Xia Xingcheng glared at him ferociously.
Xia Ye averted his gaze. After a while, he said, “What kind of man cares so much about their face?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “His face and yours can’t even be mentioned in the same breath.”
Xia Ye started rolling up his sleeves. “Think I won’t beat you up?”
Xia Xingchen didn’t speak a word and only stared at him discontentedly.
Having been stared at by Xia Xingcheng for a while, Xia Ye couldn’t stand it, and he silently pushed his sleeves back down, saying, “Why does it seem like I’m at fault?”
Xia Xingcheng was still staring at him mutely.
Xia Ye shook his head exasperatedly. “I won’t make trouble. Everyone can sit down and enjoy the food today, okay?”
Xia Xingcheng brought Xia Ye back home. This time, before he could enter the passcode, Yang Youming had already gone over and opened the door after having heard the noise.
The instant Xia Ye registered Yang Youming’s face, he froze, then turned his head without a word.
Yang Youming smiled politely. “Please come in and have a seat.”
Seeing that their dad was here, Ding Ding and Dong Dong were delighted. Fang Ying pulled Xia Ye aside and said a few words to him, voice muted. Xia Ye didn’t say anything and trained his gaze at Xia Xingcheng and Yang Youming instead.
At this time, the dining table was already filled with dishes. Yang Youming invited everyone to sit down and eat. Xia Xingcheng reached out to help him untie the apron at his lower back, and when he slipped the apron over Yang Youming’s head, he reached out and gently touched his face.
Yang Youming didn’t avoid it. He held Xia Xingcheng’s hand, and said, “It doesn’t really hurt anymore. Don’t worry.”
Xia Ye eyed them coldly, then recalled that he’d promised Xia Xingcheng that he wouldn’t make trouble, so he had no other choice but to bear with it and sit down to eat without uttering a single word.
That night, despite the presence of an unhappy Xia Ye, Fang Ying kept up a conversation with Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng throughout the New Year’s Eve dinner. Added with Ding Ding and Dong Dong’s incessant ruckus, it was still a very lively meal.
Xia Xingcheng also accompanied Fang Ying to drink a round of alcohol.
After dinner, Xia Xingcheng called his parents who were spending the New Year down south, and the whole family took turns to say their greetings. Even Ding Ding and Dong Dong apprehended the phone to greet their grandparents–yet no one brought up Yang Youming.
Afterwards, Yang Youming took out the projector in the multimedia room, and they watched the Spring Festival gala together in the living room. At around ten o’clock, Ding Ding and Dong Dong got sleepy, so everyone retired to their rooms to rest.
Fang Ying tucked Ding Ding and Dong Dong into bed, then said to Xia Ye, who was sitting on the bed and sending out New Year’s texts, “I think your brother won’t break up with Yang Youming that easily.”
Xia Ye raised his head, brows knitted as he said, “It’s just a spur of the moment hot-headedness. He’s only how old? Wait for a few more years to pass. Will he still be with Yang Youming the older he gets?”
Fang Ying said, “You don’t see how well Yang Youming treats him.”
“How well?” Xia Ye was not convinced. “Who in our family isn’t good to him? He’ll find a wife in the future who can treat him just as well.”
Fang Ying was somewhat upset at his words. Just as she was about to speak, he heard a muted conversation coming from outside the door. Xia Ye immediately got up from the bed and made his way over to the door and opened it slightly, then snuck a look outside.
“Why on earth are you eavesdropping on your little brother?” Fang Ying slapped him from behind.
Xia Ye grabbed Fang Ying’s hand. “Shush, let me listen.”
Outside, the living room lights remained switched off. Xia Xingcheng had had a lot to drink earlier that night, and he was fumbling around to fetch for a cup of water from the kitchen. The instant he turned on the kitchen lights, he was somewhat blinded by it. After narrowing his eyes, he started looking for his cup.
Soon after, Yang Youming came out of the bedroom and followed him into the kitchen. With Xia Xingcheng’s usual cup in his hands, Yang Youming poured him a cup of warm water.
“Let’s drink this back in our room.” Holding the cup, Yang Youming exited the kitchen and turned the lights off in passing.
Xia Xingcheng was slightly worked up from the alcohol. He darted forward and pounced on Yang Youming’s back, arms encircling Yang Youming’s shoulders.
The cup in Yang Youming’s hand shook, and a little water spilled out. He reached behind himself to steady Xia Xingcheng with a hand on Xia Xingcheng’s butt.
Xia Xingcheng dropped a kiss on Yang Youming’s neck, then said, “Happy New Year!”
Yang Youming stood in place, asking, “Do you still want to drink water?”
Xia Xingcheng nodded. “Yes please.”
Yang Youming said, “Then get down first.”
The two of them were standing in the living room, right behind the sofa. The light shining through the wide open door of their room was barely enough for one to make out their silhouettes.
Xia Ye watched them through the narrow opening of the doorway. At this time, Fang Ying no longer hit him, quietly leaning in to have a look herself.
Xia Xingcheng stood against the back of the sofa, while Yang Youming stood in front of him. He raised the cup of water in his hand to Xia Xingcheng’s mouth like he was going to feed it to him.
Yet as the rim of the cup neared Xia Xingcheng’s lips, Yang Youming retracted his hand. Xia Xingcheng saw the smile adorning Yang Youming’s face–it was evident that he was teasing him.
He said, “I wanna drink water.”
Yang Youming raised the cup up high, and said, “Then open your mouth.”
Xia Xingcheng deliberately parted his lips wide and made an “Ah” sound.
Yang Youming tilted the cup in the air, adjusting his wrist so a thin stream of water poured out of the cup and into Xia Xingcheng’s mouth.
Xia Xingcheng’s throat rolled as he tried to swallow the water down, but after swallowing two mouthfuls, he choked as the water entered his windpipe. He then turned away and began coughing like mad.
Yang Youming immediately took the cup away.
At Xia Xingcheng’s coughs, Xia Ye cussed and rolled up his sleeves as he prepared to come out.
Fang Ying quickly stopped him. “What are you doing?”
Xia Ye suppressed his voice and bit out, “What does he think he’s doing, teasing my little brother like that?!”
Fang Ying said, “Those lovebirds are just having fun. You don’t understand a damn thing!”
Immediately after, they saw Yang Youming sucking away the water that had drooled down the side of Xia Xingcheng’s lips. Xia Xingcheng hugged his waist, chased his lips, then said, “How are you so shameless?”
Yang Youming softly asked, “Shameless how?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “You stole my water, give it back.” He pressed his mouth to Yang Youming’s.
Yang Youming was still holding the cup of water in one hand. His free arm encircled Xia Xingcheng’s waist, and after a bit of mutual grinding in the dark, he said to Xia Xingcheng, “Go back to our room first.”
Xia Xingcheng wrapped his arms around him and said, “I wanna drink water.”
Yang Youming picked the cup again, and this time, he was gentle and cautious as he fed it to Xia Xingcheng’s mouth.
Xia Xingcheng tilted his head up slightly, his lips pressed against the rim of the cup. His Adam’s apple bobbed with each gulp as he finished the remaining water in the cup.
Yang Youming set the empty cup down on a nearby cabinet, then returned to Xia Xingcheng’s side, wiping away the leftover traces of water on Xia Xingcheng’s lips with his finger. He said, “You drank so much water, I’m worried you’ll want to go to the toilet as soon as you fall asleep.”
Xia Xingcheng blinked at him, saying, “I won’t get up then. I’ll just wet the bed.”
Yang Youming laughed. “Have you ever heard of a twenty-five year old wetting the bed?”
Xia Xingcheng grabbed Yang Youming’s hand. “Then what should I do?”
Yang Youming whispered in his ear, “I’ll carry you to pee.”
Xia Xingcheng fought for breath as he hugged Yang Youming. After a while, he said, “I wanna go pee now.”
Yang Youming bent down and picked Xia Xingcheng up in a princess carry, said, “Let’s go.” Then walked towards his room.
Xia Ye closed the door silently.
He and Fang Ying stared at each other for a while. Suddenly, Fang Ying started hitting him.
Baffled by the sudden beating, Xia Ye raised his hand to block her blows as he backed away. He didn’t dare speak loudly lest he woke up his sons with the noise, “What are you hitting me for?”
Fang Ying landed a few good hits before stopping, then said, “Apart from that good-looking face of yours, you’re simply a good for nothing guy!”
Xia Ye was still bewildered. Fang Ying turned around and headed towards the bed.
