Another day of filming: an in-studio scene of Han Bohan in Sun Yao’s rented apartment.
Unlike when Han Bohan had come to visit the crime scene last time, this time was after Sun Yao had been released. The reason why Han Bohan came by Sun Yao’s place again after the case was concluded was on account of a chance encounter in the streets.
It was the weekend. Han Bohan was driving in town, alone. The sun shone brightly one moment, but the skies abruptly darkened when he made a turn down the next street.
Han Bohan saw bean-sized raindrops falling onto the windscreen of his car, making a pattering sound. The car’s automatic windscreen wipers began to move from side to side, wiping away the drops of water on the glass that subsequently flowed down along the edges of the glass.
This rain came out of nowhere. The pedestrians on the streets hastily rushed to both sides of the street to take shelter, expressions anxious as they stared heavensward, wondering when the rain would stop.
It was then that Han Bohan saw Sun Yao.
Sun Yao was wearing a navy blue long-sleeved shirt paired with a pair of black jeans. At first, he was also among the crowd that took shelter from the rain at the side of the road. But then, without rhyme or reason, he suddenly ran out from the cover of the awnings and ran through the street despite the heavy rain. The downpour drenched his whole body in an instant.
Han Bohan’s car was going the same direction. As he neared Sun Yao, he slowed down and pulled over, lowered his car window, and sounded the horn, calling out, “Sun Yao!”
Sun Yao stopped in his tracks and looked over. Due to the rain water pelting his face, he slightly squinted; his expression was somewhat cold and detached. It was only after making out Han Bohan’s face did his expression soften a little, and he gave a nod and said, “Prosecutor.”
After the window was lowered, the rain unceasingly fell into the car, even assailing Han Bohan’s face. He had no choice but to raise his voice, “Where are you going? Get in.”
Sun Yao didn’t act immediately. He said, “I’m all wet.”
Han Bohan said, “If you don’t get in, my car will also get wet. Hurry up.”
Sun Yao got to moving then. He passed the plastic bag in his right hand to his left, opened the door of the passenger seat, got in, and immediately closed the door again.
Han Bohan asked, “Where are you headed?”
Sun Yao said, “Home.” The rain water continuously streamed down his head; a puddle of water soon accumulated on the leather seat and foot mat beneath him.
Han Bohan merely glimpsed at it, then resumed driving without a word. He didn’t ask Sun Yao where he lived. Sun Yao’s wet face was wooden—he didn’t speak up again.
Han Bohan then sent Sun Yao home and followed him upstairs.
The content that was filmed was the scene after they entered the apartment.
The actress who played Sun Xunyan, Song Yanyan, was a young girl in her freshman year at film school. She wasn’t yet eighteen, and she had a youthful and lovely appearance.
She had a very lively personality, and she particularly liked Xia Xingcheng. She said that became a diehard fan of Xia Xingcheng after watching ‘Gradual Distance’. At the same time, she also liked Yang Youming, and she once let slip that she was Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng’s CP fan.
Xia Xingcheng feigned ignorance. “What fan?”
Song Yanyan immediately covered her mouth and tried her best to change the subject.
The stylist was still arranging Yang Youming’s hair to one side, so Xia Xingcheng and Song Yanyan sat down and chatted.
Song Yanyan said, “Ge, I’m so tired.”
Xia Xingcheng looked at her. “All you do is lie down in bed. You don’t have any lines, and you don’t have to move at all, what’s exhausting about that?”
Song Yanyan whispered, “Ge. Yang Youming carries me everywhere, but I’m not supposed to react even the slightest bit. Has it never occurred to you how exhausting this is!”
Xia Xingcheng frowned. He seriously considered it for a moment before finally nodding, deep in thought. “That’s true.”
Song Yanyan sighed as she looked Yang Youming’s way. “Who knows when I’ll have a chance to do a sex scene with Yang Youming?”
Xia Xingcheng looked at her in astonishment. It took a good while before he could string together a sentence. “Aren’t you my fan?”
Son Yanyan laughed as she elbowed him. “Not like that. I’m your mom fan. But Yang Youming is so sexy, which normal actress wouldn’t want to act in emotional scenes with him?”
For the first time in his life, Xia Xingcheng felt that he was slowly getting older, unable to keep up with little miss Song Yanyan’s thought processes. He said, “You don’t look like a normal actress to me.”
After Yang Youming’s hair and costume were ready, the set went through final adjustments and they officially began shooting.
The door opened. Sun Yao and Han Bohan entered the room one after another.
Sun Yao was drenched from head to toe, still steadily dripping water. He placed the plastic bag in his hands on the shoe cabinet at the entrance and said to Han Bohan, “Prosecutor, please make yourself comfortable.” He made his way inside while unbuttoning his shirt.
Han Bohan followed Sun Yao into the apartment. He closed the anti-theft door and subconsciously surveyed the entire room, thinking that it was the exact same as the last time he came by.
Sun Yao undid his buttons one by one, took off his navy blue shirt, nonchalantly wiped his arms and chest with the wet shirt, then threw the shirt over the back of a wooden chair.
He wore a black singlet under his shirt. The damp singlet clung to his body; his firm pecs and flat abs were visibly defined, the valley along his lower back was a feast for the eyes, and further down were tight jeans.
Instead of turning to his room to change his clothes, he walked in the direction of the balcony.
Han Bohan wore loose, dark gray knitwear, and his shoulders were wet. He followed behind Sun Yao and watched him walk all the way to the balcony, only to discover that there was someone sitting there.
He took two steps closer and saw a person’s back before abruptly realising that it was Sun Xunyan.
Sun Xunyan was sitting on a wheelchair, facing outwards. There was a small pillow stuffed behind her neck to support her head.
Sun Yao walked over, and instead of pushing the wheelchair, he wrapped one hand around Sun Xunyan’s neck and another under her bent knees, then picked her up and carried her. The small pillow dropped to the floor.
“Excuse me,” Sun Yao said to Han Bohan, carrying Sun Xunyan inside.
Han Bohan stepped aside.
Sun Yao carried Sun Xunyan into her small room, and settled her down on the bed.
Han Bohan quietly made his way over to the balcony, picked up the fallen pillow, and patted it before placing it back on the wheelchair.
Sun Yao came out of the bedroom, and stood at the doorway that led to the balcony. “Thank you, prosecutor.”
“My name is Han Bohan,” he said. “She didn’t get wet, did she?”
Sun Yao shook his head. “The sun was still out when I went out this afternoon. I thought I’d be able to get home early.”
Han Bohan looked at his face and found that he was gazing at the sky. The corners of his mouth were taut. There was no way to tell whether he was complaining to God or blaming himself.
He was still clad in his drenched singlet and jeans.
Han Bohan said, “Why don’t you change your clothes first.”
Sun Yao fingers clutched his singlet and pulled it away from his body. “Have a seat. I’ll be with you in a minute.”
Han Bohan walked to the living room sofa and sat down. From this angle, he could see into both bedrooms at the same time.
The bedroom doors hadn’t been shut. Sun Xunyan was lying on the bed, her eyes shut, and in the other bedroom, Sun Yao stood by his bed, changing his clothes.
He peeled the singlet off his body, then lowered his head to unbuckle the belt around his waist. As he took off his wet jeans along with his briefs, Han Bohan averted his gaze and looked in the direction of the other bedroom—Sun Xunyan seemed very peaceful.
Sun Yao came out after changing into some dry clothes. Together with the shirt he’d thrown over the back of a chair just a moment ago, he took the garments he had changed out of to the small balcony behind the kitchen.
After that, he returned to the living room, one hand dragging a chair as he walked up to Han Bohan. Straddling the chair, he faced Han Bohan and said, “Thank you.”
Han Bohan tone was level as he replied, “Don’t mention it.”
The room fell silent. Outside, the rain fell endlessly with no signs of stopping. The lighting in the room was dim, and even though the distance between them was small, their faces seemed as if they were shrouded in shadows.
Sun Yao had no intention of turning on the lights. In this gloom, his gaze was trained directly at Han Bohan’s face, sharper than the one in the detention centre. He sized Han Bohan up inch by inch, eyes tinged with scrutiny.
Right then, He Zheng suddenly yelled “cut”, pulling the two men in the movie back to reality.
He Zheng didn’t sound particularly patient as he said, “Restrain your eyes a little.”
Yang Youming sat on his chair, motionless. It was obvious that he didn’t agree with He Zheng’s complaints, calmly questioning, “You said you wanted a scrutinizing look. Didn’t I pass?”
He Zheng lowered his head and took a drag of his cigarette. When he lifted his head, he said, “Not you, Xia Xingcheng.”
Xia Xingcheng was puzzled. “Aren’t you taking a close-up shot of Ming ge?”
He Zheng didn’t reply. He was staring at the monitor watching the playback. After a while, he crooked a finger at Hua Hua and called her over, then muttered a couple of words by her ear. With a pat on her shoulder, he told her to convey it to Xia Xingcheng.
Hua Hua jogged to Xia Xingcheng’s side, lowered her voice, and said, “Director He said that you were making bedroom eyes at Sun Yao.”
Xia Xingcheng didn’t say a word. Though he didn’t want to admit it, just now, his heart itched at the sight of Yang Youming’s slightly ruffian air and fierce gaze.
After Hua Hua finished speaking, she remained at Xia Xingcheng’s side with a look of hesitance across her face.
Xia Xingcheng asked her, “Anything else?”
Hua Hua awkwardly said, “Director He told you to stop being coquettish.”
Just as she trailed off, Xia Xingcheng saw Yang Youming smile. His face instantly reddened as he turned to look at He Zheng.
Yet He Zheng’s head was always lowered as he smoked. He didn’t meet his eyes at all.
Yang Youming beckoned to Hua Hua and gestured for her to come over. He shifted closer to her ear and whispered, “Go and tell He Zheng that it’s what I wanted. The more coquettish Xingcheng is, the better I act out my emotions.”
His voice wasn’t loud—it was just enough for Xia Xingcheng to hear. Xia Xingcheng could really no longer stand it, and he lifted his leg to kick Yang Youming.
Hua Hua’s face was wholly lifeless. She asked Yang Youming, “Is that appropriate, Ming ge?”
Yang Youming said, “Just go.”
Hua Hua jogged to He Zheng’s side and whispered a few words to him. He Zheng sneered, and glanced at them with disdain. He then seized the megaphone from the assistant director’s hands and yelled, “Get ready for a retake!”
Yang Youming smiled at Xia Xingcheng. “Prosecutor, shall we begin?” With that, his smile gradually faded as he resumed Sun Yao’s facial expression from a moment ago.
Sun Yao looked at Han Bohan.
After a period of silence, Han Bohan opened his mouth to ask, “Was your daughter all right when you picked her up at the hospital?”
Sun Yao’s face sank a little. “She had bedsores and some edema.”
Han Bohan asked, “Is she better now?”
“She is,” Sun Yao replied.
Han Bohan raised his head to look out the window. The heavy rain was as incessant as before. He felt that he had nothing more to say and slightly wanted to leave.
At that moment, Sun Yao asked, “You went to see Xiao Yan at the hospital?”
Startled, Han Bohan said, “Ah. I visited the hospital after I met you at the detention center.”
Sun Yao was sitting with his legs apart. With his hands on his knees, he said, “Thank you.”
Han Bohan let out a faint laugh. “You’ve thanked me a lot today.”
Sun Yao said, “Just doing what I ought to.”
