Yang Youming calmly heard her out, his expression unchanging. His voice was relatively gentle as he asked, “Who told you I was perfect?”
Ling Jiayue stubbornly said, “You were perfect to begin with.”
Yang Youming burst out laughing. It carried a hint of ridicule. “We’ve known each other for quite a while, but I’ve realized that you don’t know me at all. Since we’ve come across a rare opportunity, I’ll tell you everything you want to know about me. How’s that?”
Ling Jiayue looked at him in a daze. She then glanced at Xia Xingcheng, and asked, “You don’t actually like him, do you?”
“Who?” Yang Youming had a relaxed and casual bearing. “Xingcheng? I like him. No, I love him.”
In a flash, Ling Jiayue’s face flushed crimson. She said, “It’s because of that movie! You’re too deep in the act!”
Yang Youming unhurriedly said, “I’ve been acting for almost twenty years. I’ve worked with countless actresses. I’ve acted out so many romantic storylines. And yet this is the first time I’ve fallen so deeply for someone.”
Ling Jiayue looked at him with incredulous eyes.
Yang Youming continued, “I’m gay. I like men. It’s not just ‘like’—we live together, and we sleep on the same bed. You’re almost eighteen, do you know how men make love to other men?”
Ling Jiayue’s eyes were completely red as she stared at him.
Chen Hailan could no longer keep his mouth shut, calling out, “Youming.” He felt that some of his words were a little out of line.
But Yang Youming evidently thought otherwise. He didn’t look at Chen Hailan, but continued staring at Ling Jiayue. “Well? You wanted to know everything about me. I’ll tell you everything, right here, right now.”
Yet Ling Jiayue couldn’t voice out her next question.
Yang Youming appeared to ponder over something for a while. He glanced at Xia Xingcheng before continuing, “Didn’t you say that Xingcheng seduced me? He likes me, he likes seducing me, and I also like it when he seduces me. Being with him makes me happy. Do you look down on gay people, or do you look down on him? In that case, I don’t meet a single one of your expectations. I’m a gay man, and I love him.”
Xia Xingcheng’s hands were resting on the table. His right hand subconsciously squeezed the thumb of his left hand.
Ling Jiayue sniffed, on the verge of tears. She asked Yang Youming, “So those of us who like you don’t matter to you at all?”
Yang Youming answered her, “I’m thankful to those who like my works, but we shouldn’t be the one who matters most to each other, and we shouldn’t be hurting those by our side who truly matter to us for the sake of the other.”
Ling Jiayue shook her head fiercely.
Yang Youming sat upright, his tone growing strict. “Do you really know what it is you like about me? Is it me you like, or the me you’ve imagined me as? See, you don’t know me at all, so what makes you claim that you like me?”
Ling Jiayue’s tears fell. “I like you, I’ve liked you since a long time ago.”
Yang Youming’s tone turned frosty. “But I don’t like you. You shouldn’t be hurting the person I love in the name of loving me. I can’t stand that, I’d rather you hurt me directly. You shouldn’t be putting words in the mouths of everyone else who likes me, either. What they like are my works, my roles, they won’t dictate what I should be doing with my personal life!”
Ren Jingyuan had never heard Yang Youming speak to anyone in such a cold and harsh tone. Growing nervous, he pulled at Ling Jiayue’s hand, and said to Yang Youming, “Ming ge, I’m really sorry, she just doesn’t understand. She—”
Ren Jingyuan’s words stopped midway in the wake of Yang Youming glancing at him expressionlessly. His heart thumped, and he swallowed down all the things he’d wanted to say.
Yang Youming went on, “I sincerely mean everything I’ve said today. If you’re dissatisfied with me as a person, you can go online and disclose my relationship with Xingcheng to the public. I couldn’t care less.”
Ling Jiayue wiped at her tears with the back of her hand, saying, “I won’t.”
Yang Youming took out his phone and quickly tapped on the screen a few times. Then, he placed the phone on the table and slid it towards Ling Jiayue. It was opened on Yang Youming’s own Weibo page. He said, “You can post it with my Weibo account. Tell every one of my fans that the man with Xia Xingcheng in those photos is me. Every fan may do as they wish, they’re free to stay or leave. Whether the directors and investors want to work with me again is also up to them. I can bear all the consequences.”
Ling Jiayue stared at his phone until the screen gradually dimmed, not moving a single muscle from start to finish.
Yang Youming said, “It’s all right. Your brother said that you’re still young. I won’t blame you, and I won’t make things difficult for you in the future. My only wish is that you stay as far away from my life as possible. I don’t need someone like you to like me.”
Ling Jiayue’s eyes widened, her expression turned panic-stricken. She truly appeared somewhat pitiful.
Xia Xingcheng sensed Yang Youming’s genuine anger. He couldn’t resist reaching over and gently pressing on Yang Youming’s thigh under the table.
As a result, Yang Youming took hold of his hand and firmly grasped it in his palm. He then said to Ling Jiayue, “Have you figured it out? Is there anything else you plan on doing? My parents have long passed, Xia Xingcheng is the most important person in my life. I can’t stand someone bullying him right in front of me, you can’t touch a hair on his head. Today, I’m giving you a chance to immediately expose our relationship to the public. But after today, if you pull this again, I definitely won’t let you off.”
Xia Xingcheng lowered his head, his gaze trained at the tabletop.
Ling Jiayue kept crying. She left the phone untouched, and stubbornly refused to apologize.
Suddenly, Ren Jingyuan’s phone rang. He found that it was his aunt–Ling Jiayue’s mother–calling. He immediately answered the phone, and after listening to a few words, he gestured for Ling Jiayue to take it.
Ling Jiayue stared at Ren Jingyuan’s phone, refusing to answer it.
Ren Jingyuan could only apologize to Yang Youming before excusing himself to answer the phone. Then, he tugged at Ling Jiayue’s hand and dragged her outside.
The private room met with a sudden silence.
Chen Hailan looked at Yang Youming’s direction. He originally wanted to say something, but found that Yang Youming’s expression was still dark. Yang Youming was looking across the table, yet his line of sight seemed to fall on nothing. A hand tightly grasped Xia Xingcheng’s, and his thumb repeatedly rubbed the back of his hand. From where Chen Hailan sat, he could just barely see their small movements under the table, and after a moment’s hesitation, he got up, told them he was going to the bathroom, then left the room.
At that moment, only Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng were left in the room. Xia Xingcheng, who had been keeping his head down all this time, suddenly sniffed. Yang Youming immediately looked at him and said softly, “Xingcheng?”
Xia Xingcheng lifted his head, and Yang Youming saw the falling tears.
“What’s the matter?” Yang Youming seemed to grow flustered. “Feeling wronged?”
Xia Xingcheng shook his head. He didn’t feel any grievances—in fact, after listening to Ling Jiayue’s words today, he didn’t even feel a bit of chill from that boundless malice in his heart. He merely felt that Ling Jiayue’s wishful thinking was quite ridiculous.
He was truly moved because of what Yang Youming had said afterwards. “I love you”—Yang Youming had spoken these three words towards him more than once, but the way he declared his love so unabashedly in front of this many people made Xia Xingcheng emotional. When he saw Yang Youming pushing his phone towards Ling Jiayue, there was even a split second where he’d hoped that she would immediately use Yang Youming’s account to send out a Weibo post and announce their relationship to the whole world.
At present, the aforementioned phone was lying on the table, cast aside.
Xia Xingcheng rose abruptly. He leaned over and grabbed the phone, then lowered his head and looked at Yang Youming. He said, “I’ll post on Weibo.”
Yang Youming looked at his hand. He was silent for a moment before he slowly shook his head. “Give me the phone.”
Upon seeing Yang Youming extending his hand, he took a deep breath, and returned the phone to Yang Youming with utter reluctance and regret.
After Yang Youming put his phone back, he still extended his hand towards Xia Xingcheng.
Dazed, Xia Xingcheng took his hand, and he was pulled till he sat down on Yang Youming’s lap.
Yang Youming hugged him tightly, burying his face in his embrace. After a while, he whispered, “I’m so angry.”
Xia Xingcheng looked down at the top of Yang Youming’s head; he couldn’t help but press a kiss there. He said, “I know.”
Yang Youming’s face was pressed to his chest, and his voice came out all muffled, not sounding like his voice at all. He said, “If she’d done it to me instead, I wouldn’t be this angry.
Xia Xingcheng said, “I know.”
Yang Youming raised his head and looked at Xia Xingcheng. “Don’t worry. I’m here.”
Xia Xingcheng’s eyes were still flushed, yet he couldn’t help but smile. “I wasn’t worried to begin with.” It wasn’t because he had Yang Youming with him, but because he was maturing day after day. He felt that he was no longer so easily hurt. He stared at Yang Youming solemnly for a moment, and said, “My mom and dad are still here, and you’re also the most important person in my life.”
Yang Youming’s long and slender finger pointed to where his heart was located. “More important than your parents?”
Xia Xingcheng laughed. He pretended to consider the question for a moment. “Are you gonna ask who I’d save first if you and my parents fell into the water at the same time?”
Yang Youming laughed with him. He said, “The answer’s easy. It’s definitely me helping you save your parents. Don’t forget about all my swimming trophies at home.”
Xia Xingcheng laughed heartily in his arms and kissed him on the lips.
A while later, in the corridor outside, Ren Jingyuan concluded the call with Ling Jiayue’s mother. After hanging up, he glared daggers at Ling Jiayue. “Has your head cleared up a bit? If you go in there and continue stirring shit up, then you’d better stay outside!”
With red eyes, Ling Jiayue said, “I’m not crazy.”
Ren Jingyuan grabbed at her clothes and tugged, making her entire body sway. Stifling his rage, he said, “You’re not crazy?! Go have a good look at yourself in the mirror! I don’t care what you do on your own, just don’t drag me into it, okay?!”
Ling Jiayue said, “Does he hate me?”
Ren Jingyuan sneered. “Even I hate you!”
Ling Jiayue’s body trembled faintly.
On Ren Jingyuan’s phone call with her mother just then, she’d said that she would visit the set tomorrow to talk to Ling Jiayue, and then personally apologize to Yang Youming and Xia Xingcheng.
Ling Jiayue whispered, “I really like him.”
In that instant, Ren Jingyuan looked at Ling Jiayue and felt fed up. He was also a popular idol himself. He’d come across all sorts of fans, and oft times, to maintain his image, he’d have to restrain himself when encountering the words and deeds of overly fanatic fans. He thought that, if he and Yang Youming were to swap places, he’d definitely find Ling Jiayue disgusting. This disgust almost manifested in his mouth, and it was difficult to keep it down. He said, “Don’t regard Yang Youming with those twisted thoughts. Yang Youming and I are different, he’s not an idol, he’s a nationally renowned actor. You’re genuinely nothing to him. It’s painfully clear that he’s going to protect Xia Xingcheng to the end, it doesn’t seem like a joke to me. Don’t go provoking Xia Xingcheng again. If you do, you won’t even have to wait for Yang Youming to lift a finger, I’ll sort you out myself first!”
Ling Jiayue pursed her lips.
Fed up with the sight of her, Ren Jingyuan turned back to the private room. Just as the door opened a crack, he saw Xia Xingcheng sitting on Yang Youming’s lap. The two of them were kissing. He immediately felt awkward and softly tugged the door shut.
Behind him, Ling Jiayue suddenly realised what was going on. She pushed him away and pulled the door open, right in time to see Xia Xingcheng’s tilted head and closed eyes, his cheeks flushed as Yang Youming kissed along his neck and tense body. His lips were crimson and moist, and it was obvious that he was aroused. Yang Youming was squeezing his waist with one hand, while his other hand was buried under his clothes, caressing the skin of Xia Xingcheng’s waist and back.
Ren Jingyuan dragged Ling Jiayue back and reached out to close the door.
Ling Jiayue crouched on the floor with her face buried in her hands, her shoulders heaving with pain.
