Han Bohan felt a particular unease. He subconsciously wanted to look at the time, yet no clocks hung on the walls of Sun Yao’s house.
Sun Yao was still standing at the doorway, not having moved a centimetre, the dim lighting of the room obscuring his expression.
Han Bohan opened his mouth, and he heard his own serene voice saying, “I have a classmate who just got back from the US. He’s a neurosurgeon. I asked him if he could examine Xiao Yan when he’s available.”
Sun Yao looked at him without a word.
Han Bohan wasn’t entirely lying. He did have a classmate who worked at a hospital abroad who’d just returned to the country, and he really was a neurosurgeon. When they had met previously, he’d wanted to tell Sun Yao about having his classmate examine Sun Xunyan, but he hadn’t had the chance to bring it up yet.
At this time, Sun Yao’s eyes slowly shifted towards the narrow bed.
Han Bohan asked, “Why is Xiao Yan sitting outside this late?”
Sun Yao’s tone subtly changed. “She’s been lying down the entire day, so I took her to sit out here. It gave me an excuse to change her bedsheets anyway.”
Han Bohan looked towards the small bedroom and saw that there really were new sheets that were half made on the bed. He hesitated slightly before saying, “Since you’re preoccupied, I won’t be a bother.”
Sun Yao asked, “You’re leaving?”
Feeling an unnameable abnormality in his heart, Xia Xingcheng nodded. “I’m going home.”
Sun Yao said, “Then I’ll walk you out.”
Han Bohan shot a quick glimpse around the room once more; there was no Shu Mian, nor a cake box. Sun Yao had already opened the door, and he stood at the doorway waiting for him, like he wanted nothing more than for Han Bohan to leave right that second.
As he walked towards the door and arrived at Sun Yao’s side, Sun Yao raised a hand and pressed it to his lower back, slightly forceful, and Han Bohan walked out with the force of Sun Yao’s hand.
The scene ended here. He Zheng shouted, “Cut!”
Still plastered to Xia Xingcheng’s back, Yang Youming lifted his hand and embraced Xia Xingcheng’s shoulders, lightly patted him, then swiftly let go.
Xia Xingcheng took a deep breath and wiped at the sweat on his forehead. He wasn’t just sweating because of the stuffy studio, but also because of the pressure from this scene.
Hua Hua padded over with a bottle of coke and handed it to Xia Xingcheng, along with a clean towel for Xia Xingcheng to wipe his still-damp cheeks with.
Xia Xingcheng unscrewed the bottle cap, yet just as he downed a mouthful of coke, he noticed Yang Youming looking his way. He wordlessly screwed the cap back on, then passed the coke back to Hua Hua, saying, “Give me warm water instead.”
Hua Hua took the bottle back, baffled. She asked, “Didn’t you say that it was too hot and you wanted to drink coke yesterday?”
Xia Xingcheng whispered, “The elderly say that drinking too much soda will cause osteoporosis.”
Hua Hua didn’t understand. “Which elder?” After she asked this, she instantly reacted, asking, “Is it Ming ge?”
Xia Xingcheng glared at her. “How is Ming ge old? There’s no way that Ming ge’s old.”
Hua Hua was even more at a loss. “Then who are you talking about?”
Xia Xingcheng kneaded the space between his eyebrows. “Why do you care so much about who I’m referring to, I was just blurting stuff out, why are you questioning this so seriously? Also, you’re not allowed to call Ming ge old!”
Hua Hua pouted unhappily.
–
That night, Xua Xingcheng had a strange dream.
He dreamt that he and Yang Youming were in a small room. The surroundings were very familiar. He was lying in bed, getting ready to sleep, and Yang Youming was sitting on a chair at his side.
When he closed his eyes, he was haunted by the familiarity of the room, and yet he couldn’t remember where he was. His thoughts were in disarray, and his body was addled by drowsiness. He tried to keep himself awake, yet he quickly sunk into a slumber. In the midst of a deep sleep, he suddenly recalled that this was the small rental apartment Sun Yao and his daughter lived in.
With that in mind, in a split second, Xia Xingcheng woke with a start, only to find that he was still inside that room, yet he discovered that he wasn’t Xia Xingcheng at all, but Han Bohan. Sun Yao was sitting at a murky corner watching him, his appearance obscure.
Afterwards, Xia Xingcheng was once again awakened; this time, he was truly awake. He opened his eyes and realised that he was in a hotel room, and lying next to him was a sound asleep Yang Youming, breaths deep.
Xia Xingcheng lay still for a couple of minutes until his nerves and apprehension gradually scattered. He realised, to his genuine joy, that he was Xia Xingcheng, not Han Bohan.
The window curtains were drawn tight, keeping out almost all the outside light. Except for the green emergency light by the door, it was pitch-black inside the room.
Xia Xingcheng could hear Yang Youming’s breathing, yet he couldn’t see his face clearly. His heart was somewhat restless as he shifted a little closer to him, and after a while, he shifted closer again until he touched Yang Youming’s warm body.
Yang Youming was a light sleeper. In an instant, his slow, deep breathing vanished.
Figuring that he was probably awake, Xia Xingcheng turned so that his body faced Yang Youming’s, then threw a hand across his waist.
Two seconds later, Yang Youming reached out and held Xia Xingcheng. His voice was muffled—not entirely conscious—as he said, “What’s wrong? Can’t sleep?”
Xia Xingcheng was already wide awake by then. He rubbed his face against Yang Youming’s neck, somewhat scared, and said, “I had a nightmare.”
Yang Youming didn’t respond right away. Xia Xingcheng almost suspected that he’d fallen asleep again, until Yang Youming kissed his forehead in the dark. He asked, “What did you dream about?”
Xia Xingcheng wasn’t in a hurry to tell Yang Youming about his dream, he only asked, “My nightmare scared me awake, and then the noise woke you up, if I tell you about it, would you find me annoying?”
Yang Youming laughed softly. His voice was slurred as he said, “I won’t. But you better hurry, or else I might fall asleep before I hear the whole thing.”
As if truly worried that he’ll fall asleep, Xia Xingcheng propped himself up and climbed on top of Yang Youming’s body, pressing his whole body against him and hugging him tightly with his head resting next to Yang Youming’s.
Yang Youming had no choice but to lay flat, letting out a muffled grunt as Xia Xingcheng pressed him down. In a low voice, he said, “Young man, how much do you weigh?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “I’ve lost a bit of weight from shooting these days, it should be around 62 kilos.”
*or 136ish pounds
Yang Youming was hugging his waist. He gently pat his back as if he was appeasing a child, and said, “Mm, not heavy at all.”
Xia Xingcheng’s voice was gravelly as he said, “Ming ge, you can’t leave me.”
Yang Youming’s hand stilled from where it’d been patting his back. He turned his face sideways, like he wanted to look at him, but nothing was visible in the dark. He then reached out to turn on the lamp on the bedside table and slightly sat up on his elbows. He asked, “What’s wrong? What did you dream about?”
Xia Xingcheng shut his eyes at the sudden burst of light. He nestled his face into Yang Youming’s neck, and told him, “I dreamt that I was Han Bohan.”
Yang Youming’s palm gently stroked his back. “Were you affected by the role?”
Xia Xingcheng was silent for a while before he said, “I was wondering if I shouldn’t have taken on this movie.”
Yang Youming softly said, “Didn’t you say that you wanted to shoot a few more movies with me? So we can sit down and watch them together in the future?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “Then we should also make a movie where we fall in love and have our happy ending.”
Yang Youming laughed, his chest vibrating slightly. “First of all, I don’t think we’d ever run into that kind of plot again. And even if we do, you wouldn’t take it, would you?”
Xia Xingcheng said, “Yes.”
Yang Youming planted a kiss on his face.
Xia Xingcheng sounded somewhat dejected. “When I made movies before, I wouldn’t be so obviously affected by my characters. Even if my girlfriend died, I wouldn’t feel that miserable.”
Yang Youming couldn’t resist letting out a quiet laugh. “Filming is filming, you can draw a clear line between acting and reality.”
Xia Xingcheng pondered over this for a long time. “Maybe I can’t do that when it comes to you. If it’s you, I can’t tell the difference.”
Yang Youming’s voice was a low rumble as he asked, “Then what do we do? Sun Yao doesn’t love Han Bohan, and He Zheng won’t change the plot for you.”
Xia Xingcheng said, “I don’t want to change the plot—I just want you to touch me and hug me more so that I can break away from Han Bohan’s emotions quicker.”
Yang Youming hugged him, coaxing him. “It’s almost over. When filming ends, how about we have a vacation?”
Xia Xingcheng asked, “Where are we going?”
“We’ll go to a country where no one knows us,” Yang Youming said to him, “an island or mountain is fine too. We’ll find a hotel to stay at so you can quickly forget about Han Bohan and continue being Xia Xingcheng happily.”
Xia Xingcheng nodded mutey. His face was still closely pressed against Yang Youming’s neck, and his every inhale was filled with Yang Youming’s scent. He abruptly couldn’t help opening his mouth, wanting to bite him.
Yet just as his teeth latched onto Yang Youming’s skin, Yang Youming immediately said, “Don’t bite. If you leave a mark, it’ll affect filming.”
Xia Xingcheng withdrew his teeth and switched to gentle licking. He said, “I want to bite you and eat you up, so that I’d never have to worry about you leaving me ever again.”
Yang Youming kissed his forehead. “You can bite me when filming’s over, okay?”
Something crossed Xia Xingcheng’s mind–he giggled, and asked, “Bite where?”
With a throaty voice, Yang Youming said, “You can bite anywhere you want.”
Xia Xingcheng started feeling sleepy again. He yawned, shut his eyes, and said, “Can I just sleep like this?”
Yang Youming was probably tired too. He turned off the light, then slightly lay flat, saying, “Lie on your side, I’ll spoon you.”
Xia Xingcheng said, “No, I wanna hug you.”
Yang Youming then said, “Then I’ll hug you from the front.”
Xia Xingcheng dawdled and slid off Yang Youming’s body, lay on his side, and faced him. They hugged each other. He was already very sleepy, yet he wanted to hear Yang Youming talk to him, so he closed his eyes and, thoughts addled, prattled, “Would you ever sleep holding someone else like this?”
Yang Youming should also be sleepy. His speech slowed, asking, “Who?”
Xia Xingcheng couldn’t think of anyone else. He said, “Yuan Qian?”
Yang Youming didn’t answer.
Xia Xingcheng hugged Yang Youming tightly, opening his eyes in the darkness.
Yang Youming said, “We’re already divorced. Don’t bring her up, I hardly ever think of her.”
Only then did Xia Xingcheng shut his eyes. He was muddled, half asleep and half awake. He said, “Let’s get married.”
This time, Yang Youming readily answered him, “All right. When we wrap up, I’ll go buy a ring.”
Xia Xingcheng was perfectly content with his words, and his thoughts seemed to stagnate. Eventually, he mustered up, “I’ll bear a child for you.”
This time, Yang Youming opened his eyes in the darkness. He couldn’t make out Xia Xingcheng’s face, but upon hearing how his breathing had gone slow and even, he smiled faintly and kissed his forehead once more.
From the next day onwards, Yang Youming would feed Xia Xingcheng a candy before every scene they shared.
He didn’t even hide it. In front of the entire crew, before they began filming, he would first peel the candy, then bring it to Xia Xingcheng’s mouth. Xia Xingcheng didn’t dare look at him the whole time, fearing that too many glances would give away his feelings. Every time, he’d take the candy into his mouth, then walk away silently and sit down at the side.
One time, Song Yanyan said to Yang Youming, “Ming ge, I wanna have candy too.”
Yang Youming laughed and said, “There’s only one. I’ll get one for you next time.”
Having heard this, Song Yanyan said, “No need!~ By feeding Xing ge candy, you’re basically feeding me candy too!” With that, she happily bounded off.
“What’s she on about?” Yang Youming asked Li Yun.
Li Yun shook her head expressionlessly. “I have no idea either.”
