Though Xia Xingcheng was actually hungry, with Yang Youming by his side, he couldn’t put his mind on the matter of eating, so he only grabbed a serving of stir-fried noodles and a glass of milk before following Yang Youming over to the dining seats.
Yang Youming went straight to Chen Hailan’s table. Xia Xingcheng had no choice but to follow him, but as he got closer, he realized that besides Chen Hailan and the two women, there was another man sitting at the table.
The man’s name was Ding Wenxun, a well-known actor who was also in his thirties. But unlike Yang Youming, whose acting skills had been unanimously recognized by all walks of life, his works weren’t as famous, and were neither warm nor hot.*
*set expression, meaning just plain and moderate
He hadn’t shown his face in show business for several years already, and was said to have gone abroad to study directing for a few years.
Xia Xingcheng hadn’t seen him at Chen Hailan’s wedding yesterday, neither did he know if the man had rushed over late last night or early this morning.
When Xia Xingcheng drew near, before Yang Youming could open his mouth, Cai Meiting introduced Xia Xingcheng, “Xingcheng, this is Wenxun ge. He just got back from the United States.”
Xia Xingcheng placed the plate on the table and bowed slightly, then extended a hand towards Ding Wenxun, “Hello Wenxun ge, I’ve been looking forward to meeting you. I’m Xia Xingcheng, just call me Xingcheng.”
Cai Meiting lightly wiped her mouth with a napkin, her lipstick still intact, saying, “Xingcheng is an artist from our company, a young actor.”
Ding Wenxun stood up and shook Xia Xingcheng’s hand, “I’ve heard, nice to meet you.”
Yang Youming, who was obviously familiar with him, asked, “When did you get here?”
Ding Wenxun replied, “I took an early flight and got here just after three. Unfortunately I couldn’t make it to Old Chen’s wedding.”
Xia Xingcheng sat down beside Yang Youming, feeling that he couldn’t stick himself into this kind of situation, and wordlessly used his chopsticks to eat the stir-fried noodles.
Yang Youming asked Chen Hailan oddly, “Where’s your wife? Why did you leave the bride so early?”
Laughing, Chen Hailan said, “I woke up early and saw Wenxun saying that he had arrived so I got up to have breakfast with him. My wife was still sleeping, so I didn’t disturb her.”
Ding Wenxun and the rest had apparently almost finished eating, not touching much of what was left of the plate, just sitting down and chatting. He said, “His wife is still young, of course she can’t get enough sleep, unlike Old Chen at his big age who doesn’t need to sleep in. Only a lonely man like me can keep him company.”
Hearing this, Chen Hailan didn’t get angry, and laughed as he said, “I’ll take that as a reference to yourself.”
Xia Xingcheng couldn’t help looking up. In the restaurant, other than himself, he didn’t see any other person in their twenties. Sitting here, he really did look out of place.
If it weren’t for Yang Youming, he would’ve probably held back from urinating and not gone to the bathroom, then go right back to bed, Xia Xingcheng thought as he took a sip of milk.
When he put the glass down, Yang Youming shot a glance at him, then drew a tissue from the table to give it to him.
Xia Xingcheng was stunned, and when he reached out to take it, he saw You Shu, who was sitting across him, pointing to his lips. He glimpsed at his reflection on the glass and found that his lips were stained with white milk stains. He promptly wiped them off with the tissue.
Chen Hailan then suddenly asked Xia Xingcheng: “Did Xingcheng sleep well last night?”
Xia Xingcheng echoed, “I did.”
Chen Hailan nodded, “I fear Jingyuan and the others can’t behave with their jokes.”
Xia Xingcheng smiled at Chen Hailan and said, “How can that be? It’s just everyone playing around with each other.”
Cai Meiting asked Xia Xingcheng, “How did you meet Ming ge so early in the morning?”
Xia Xingcheng didn’t dare to answer casually this time, and he looked towards Yang Youming.
The breakfast Yang Youming had taken was a strange combination of youtiao and coffee. His posture was indifferent as he took a sip of coffee and said, “Xingcheng was drunk last night and I picked him up. I saw that he couldn’t even stand up, so I let him sleep at my place.”
Xia Xingcheng didn’t expect him to say it directly and didn’t know how to react for a moment.
Cai Meiting glared at him, “Inconveniencing Ming ge again!”
Xia Xingcheng could only smile, saying, “I’m sorry, Ming ge, I really had too much to drink.”
Ding Wenxun showed a curious look at the words, “How are you guys so familiar with each other?” He and Yang Youming had a good relationship, but he hadn’t heard much about Xia Xingcheng before. When he heard these words, he thought they were just pleasantries.
Yang Youming said, “We worked together for He Zheng’s movie.”
He had only said that when Chen Hailan continued, “You weren’t in China during that time. Just before Xingcheng recorded the show with me and You Shu, he had just finished filming He Zheng’s movie.”
Yang Youming raised a hand and placed it on Xia Xingcheng’s shoulder, “He Zheng handpicked the male lead.”
Ding Wenxun’s eyes on Xia Xingcheng were seemingly different from before, asking with interest, “So Xingcheng is the male lead. Yang Youming, are you the second lead?”
Yang Youming laughed and said, “Sort of.”
Xia Xingcheng didn’t understand why the conversation had turned to him. He was a little uneasy and could only stop his chopsticks and smile.
Yang Youming used his knife and fork to cut the youtiao, his movements graceful as if he was cutting steak. He ate a small portion of the youtiao and took a sip of coffee without hurrying, then asked Ding Wenxun, “Have you chosen the actors for your movie yet?”
Ding Wenxun shook his head, “Still contacting them.” He was currently in the middle of preparing his first ever film as a director, and he had talked to both Yang Youming and Chen Hailan before. He said, “Why don’t you recommend me some young actors with decent acting skills?”
Yang Youming put down his coffee cup and suddenly smiled.
You Shu had been staring at Yang Youming when she heard him bring up this topic, and at this time, she couldn’t help but turn to Cai Meiting, just as Cai Meiting also turned to look at her. Their gazes were somewhat profound.
Before Yang Youming could speak, Chen Hailan had already understood Yang Youming’s intentions and grinned, saying, “There’s such a good actor right in front of you, and you still need a recommendation from Youming?
Xia Xingchen was stunned, yet his heart couldn’t stop beating wildly.
