Prologue
Journalist Park received an instruction from the editor-in-chief to investigate a big spender in Gangnam.
He was at a loss.
It seemed unlikely that a big spender in Gangnam would meet a mere journalist like him.
Moreover, he had no idea where this big spender lived or how to contact him.
After exhausting all his connections, he finally found someone.
It was a man named Koo Geon-ho, who had recently acquired a star building in Gangnam. He had moved from an apartment in T Complex in Dogok-dong, Gangnam-gu, to a 300-pyeong (about 99,000 square feet) standalone mansion in Bangbae-dong.
Koo Geon-ho was described as a reclusive figure who avoided meeting people.
Journalist Park thought that the big spender in Gangnam, Koo Geon-ho, was an elderly person. This was because the big spenders of the past, such as Grandma Baek, Bear, and the eel from Apgujeong-dong, were all old.
After all, wouldn't one need to be of a certain age to accumulate such vast wealth?
However, when the journalist met the reclusive big spender in Gangnam, known as the cash king, he was surprised. Koo Geon-ho looked to be in his 30s, about 10 years younger than the journalist.
The journalist suspected that perhaps he had inherited a massive fortune from a wealthy father, but that was not the case. His parents lived in a modest villa in Jooan, Incheon. His father was unemployed, and his mother was a caregiver.
He had dropped out of a local university and graduated from a cyber university. He came to Noryangjin to find a stable job and escape poverty. He struggled with 9th-grade civil service exams, buying cup noodles to survive, but kept failing. To make a living, he worked at a plastic factory in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi-do, and later moved around to work in factories in Pocheon and Yangju.
Koo Geon-ho did not become a big spender in Gangnam by waking up one day to find himself reincarnated into a wealthy family or by some magical power. It was purely the result of his own efforts and a strong stroke of luck.
The journalist asked him one final question.
"Excuse me, but since you're known as the cash king, may I ask how much cash you have available right now?"
The journalist thought this person's cash would probably exceed several hundred billion won, but he received an unexpected answer.
"Well... I'm not sure exactly how much, but it should be over 1 trillion won."
"Wow! 1 trillion won!"
The journalist was so surprised that he couldn't close his mouth.
