Chapter 8

"Hey, what's that strange creature? Is it a local specialty?" The girl pointed to the bizarre plant that was swaying and trying to attack us with its tentacle-like vines from a distance, and turned to ask me, "It doesn't look very cute, does it?"

"Miss, please have some sense of danger, will you?! That thing isn't just un-cute, it looks extremely dangerous!" I quickly grabbed her hand and was about to run back. The plant was currently dazed; this was the perfect time to leave.

But to my surprise, she slapped my hand away on the spot: "What are you doing!?"

"Of course, I'm taking you away from this place." I was so anxious that I was almost sweating, and I pointed to the mosaic at the alley entrance, shouting, "See that pile of hot翔 (feces)? If we don't leave now, we'll end up like that local specialty of yours!"

The girl's face immediately darkened: "What's going on? I didn't hear that they would start acting now. And, it's a plant? Did Belock and the others change their tactics?"

No matter who this Belock guy was, who had designed to get the girl into the sewer, now wasn't the time to discuss him—of course, I was very grateful to him because thanks to him, I had the chance to see the cute underwear of this beautiful blonde girl. Thanks... No, that's not it at all!

"Don't just stand there, that monster can really kill people!" I couldn't understand what this girl was thinking. Anyone who saw that pile of mosaic would have screamed and run away, but she was still calmly muttering to herself, "If you don't leave, I'll go first. I still have to find my sister."

"No way!" The girl suddenly came to her senses, grabbed my collar, and slammed me against the left wall, "Stay here and wait. I can take care of that small fry in a few moves."

I wanted to say something, but I couldn't. The force from the girl's slender, pale hand was unexpectedly strong. Having dealt with the frail and weak Aoi-senpai for a long time, I never thought a girl could be so strong. In her hands, I felt as helpless as a newborn baby. The air was squeezed out of my lungs from the impact with the wall, and if she didn't let go, I would have fainted and foamed at the mouth in the next second.

Fortunately, the girl soon noticed this, frowning slightly as if dissatisfied with my weakness. But in the end, she said nothing, released me, and skillfully swung her elegant one-handed sword, then confidently walked towards the plant that was gradually recovering.

So, what does this mysterious and crazy girl want to do, fight the monster with a cold weapon!?

I couldn't stand up immediately and could only sit against the wall, gasping for breath, watching the girl's back in silence.

The plant violently thrashed its vines, as if gathering strength. Two seconds later, it indeed took action, and I was utterly shocked.

It turned and ran away!

Regardless of what these plants were, from their previous attacks, we knew that the tentacle monsters were fearless cannon fodder, charging at armored units without hesitation, even if they couldn't hurt them at all.

But now, this monster, facing a girl who was slightly smaller than her peers, ran away without hesitation!?

"Want to run? Come here and die—!"

With a sweet and fierce cry, the girl swung her sword forcefully. A dazzling blue arc of lightning brutally swept through the other side of the alley, cracking the cement and igniting the grass and plastic bags. The plant tentacle monster instantly turned into a smoldering lump of charcoal, looking like the first scrambled eggs Mengyun ever made.

Even though the result was the same as before...

Bored, the girl pouted and raised her left hand. A sword scabbard with golden edges and colorful gems appeared in the air nearby. She calmly grasped it, elegantly drew a brilliant sword arc in the air, and deftly sheathed the weapon.

As if she had practiced it countless times.

The girl turned and walked back to me. Just as she was about to speak, I quickly knelt before her in a standard prostration pose: "Mistress, spare my life!"

Whether she was a demon hunter who had made a contract with a white cat-like creature or a hermit who had trained in the mountains with her father, I had just seen her underwear; plus, her mother seemed to have instilled a lot of strange things in her. I didn't want to die at her hands instead of the monster.

"That's embarrassing, get up quickly!" The girl waited for me to stand up and then tilted her head, asking, "By the way, what's a 'mistress'?"

Her tone was full of confusion, not like she was maliciously pretending to be ignorant.

I decided not to explain this special profession that had made many villains, who tried to flirt with girls but ended up as pandas, shed tears on the spot.

"Right, Mengyun!" After the crisis was over, I immediately remembered my sister and ran back the way I came. Although there were troops on the road, in various post-apocalyptic works, the military was often not as reliable as imagined. If they couldn't even protect themselves, how could they protect ordinary civilians?

As it turned out, I was too shallow.

The girl with the long sword chose to accompany me, but I didn't pay much attention. In my frantic search, I didn't find Mengyun in the alley and was about to check the station when a deafening whistle suddenly echoed in the sky.

Then, the entire sea began to boil.

The giant island on the sea was engulfed in flames, and many plants swimming towards the beach were instantly shredded. Countless rockets had terrifying destructive power, but that wasn't all: a fleet of bombers, flying at a height that made them invisible from the ground, dropped tons of explosives, landing on the island before the rocket attack even finished.

Whatever they were, this level of attack was enough to make them pay a heavy price.

More agile mechs took over the front line on the beach, as the cannon fodder tentacle monsters couldn't hurt these iron giants. The large-caliber specialized guns and indestructible bodies formed a wall that the plants couldn't cross. Even if a few lucky ones broke through, they were instantly mowed down by the infantry providing cover fire from behind.

When a few flamethrower tanks arrived, the mysterious island, now burning and smoking, finally retreated. It quickly submerged into the sea, disappearing under the barrage of firepower.

Leaving behind a field of corpses, both plant and human.

I didn't pay much attention to the battle. In my rush to find my sister, I finally found her in a small convenience store near the station—she was sitting in a chair at the entrance, happily licking an ice cream cone.

"Huh? Big brother, you're still alive?" Mengyun's face lit up with surprise, but her words sounded off somehow.

"Did I risk my life fighting monsters and buying time just so you could sit here eating an ice cream and watching the show!?" I roughly ruffled her hair, intentionally messing up her neatly combed hair, and angrily said, "And what's with that line that sounds like you hope I'd die?"

Mengyun let out an innocent wail, but she immediately stopped when she saw the girl behind me.

"Who is she?" Mengyun pointed at the girl and demanded.

"I don't know." I answered honestly, "She suddenly appeared and quickly took care of the monster. Thank her; if it weren't for her, I'd be a pile of mosaic by now."

Mengyun's face turned to one of exaggerated shock, and she leaned back, examining me up and down, "No way—! You, who no girl except Aoi would ever approach, got a 'fallen from the sky' girl!?"

"Fallen from the sky, my sister! I've told you to stop reading so many light novels, but you never listen!" I angrily tugged at the two small tufts of hair on Mengyun's head, "What's with this tragic fate, and what does Aoi-senpai have to do with it?"

"Why not a 'fallen from the sky' girl?" Mengyun, while freeing her hair, stubbornly straightened her neck, "You can't say she didn't fall from the sky, can you?"

Recalling the awkward situation when I first met the girl, I considered that if I told the truth—that she had jumped out of the sewer and I accidentally saw her underwear—she would definitely kill me. So, I could only tremble and pat Mengyun's shoulder, "Sis, there are some things in this world you're better off not knowing."

The little girl looked back and forth between me and the girl, then said, "Did you two have a legendary '福利' (福利 scene) when you met?"

Suddenly, the sound of a sword being drawn rang out behind me. I swear I saw a beautiful girl with a red scythe smiling at me nearby.
