“Whoa!” Gu Anran cried out at suddenly being lifted and turned around her head to bite her assailant. However, her bite missed and she fell into someone’s embrace, their cold scent permeating her nose.

“Anran, it seems you still don’t know how to pay attention to your surroundings!” An amused voice sounded out and Gu Anran felt a sudden pain on her forehead. The owner of this voice had actually flicked her forehead!

“Hey, that hurts!” Gu Anran clutched her forehead and whined like a child as she looked aggrievedly up at the person behind her.

“Mom, she’s bullying me!” Gu Anran yelled and then looked up with watery eyes.

That’s right, the people standing behind her are members of the ten seats that stood on the stage just moments ago. They are: Gu Bing, Gu Anran’s birth mother and current possessor of the second seat. Then the person who flicked her forehead, Chi Wenyan, leader of the Fox clan. Next, Mu Yu, leader of the rabbit clan and finally, Hong Yan, the leader of the leopard clan. Four of the ten seats and their respective family members!

“Hey, hey, how can you say that! I am your mother too!” Chi Wenyan puffed her chest and then pinched her daughter’s soft white ears. Yup, this was her daughter alright, these ears are so soft and furry, just like her lover’s ears!

“Whaaa….go away!” Having her sensitive ears rubbed and pinched felt uncomfortable to Gu Anran. She waved her paws and tried to escape Chi Wenyan’s claws.

“Yan, enough.” Gu Bing gently patted her wife who was still teasing her daughter and embraced Gu Anran into her arms.

“Wuwuwu, Gu Bing, you bastard~ You don’t want me anymore now that we have a daughter~~!” Chi Wenyan cried dramatically while holding her hand that was swatted away.

“Enough, Anran, don’t bully Qingli.” A gentle voice rang out above her and Gu Anran belatedly realized the thighs she was lying on were not her mother’s but Mu Yu, the rabbit clan’s leader!

Gu Anran tried to keep count and estimated they had run at least five kilometers! However, to Gu Bing and the others, it seemed like it was nothing and they didn’t even sweat.

“Once we pass this neck of the woods we’ll be entering the hunting grounds. Since the beastmen and wild beasts live in separated areas, you won’t see many wild creatures in the woods.” Gu Bing explained and at the same time they arrived on the other side of the forest.

Wow! Although it was still an open prairie like where the Beastmen had lived, it was completely different. While the Beastmen’s area was a place for fun and games, this open prairie was a place where various wild creatures struggled for survival.

Antelopes, zebras, giraffes, elephants, lions, tigers, and more dotted the landscape. These were animals Gu Anran had only seen on TV!

“Mengyan, your mother is over there.” Chi Wenyan pointed towards one direction and Gu Anran followed her finger to see a woman leading three men and two women to circle around a zebra herd.

The zebra seemed to have not noticed anything and were grazing leisurely.

“Are they choosing which one to catch?” Gu Anran whispered. On TV, the prey was often picked off one by one but she didn’t know if it was the same for the Beastmen.

“Which one? They’re discussing how to catch a group of them.” Gu Bing glanced down at her daughter in confusion and wondered why she would ask such an obvious question.

Is that so? Aren’t they afraid that by doing this all the wild creatures will go extinct soon? Then they’ll have no meat to eat.

“Anran, don’t worry. Although we do hunt, we don’t eat meat every day. Although we have a lot of Beastmen, if we look at the figures, the total number of wild creatures is three times larger than the Beastmen. So there is no need to worry about extinction or lack of meat.” Mu Yu seemed to have seen through Gu Anran’s thoughts and explained lightly beside her.

And in this manner, no blood was spilled, no injuries ( at least for the hunters) as the six-man team successfully hunted three zebras.

“Little sister, you’re daughter’s the one who asked where you and your husband have gone. They wanted to watch you guys hunt so we took them out for a spin.” Chi Wenyan stretched her mischievous hands and pinched her little sister’s cheeks. She kneaded her sister’s face like dough and that heroic beauty immediately became a puddle.

“Sister, don’t pinch me!” Chi Wenlin grabbed Chi Wenyan’s hand helplessly.

“Gu Bing, are you guys going to stay here or go back with us.” Chi Mengyan’s father is an effeminate looking man that was rare among other Beastmen. He is also from the fox clan. It seems…that everyone in the fox clan is beautiful! Actually, most of the members of the Fox clan were beautiful and extremely seductive! Therefore, the other races’ offspring tended to follow Fox clan members. After all, the chance of landing a Fox clan mate was far higher if they were their childhood friend!

That’s why Chi Mengyan has so many males and females around her. Furthermore, the Fox Clan tended to have a low birth rate. So for a fox to be born from two pure-blooded fox beastmen…..they would definitely be a stunning and rare creature indeed!

“We’ll hunt a few prey and take them back with us later. Don’t worry, with us here, they won’t get hurt.” Hong Yan tied up her black hair and then glanced at the wild creatures roaming the mountains with fiery eyes.

“Understood, then we’ll go back first. Make sure to come back early!” Chi Wenlin nodded and then said a few more words before she and her team ran into the forest.

After her figure disappeared, Gu Anran raised her head to look up at Gu Bing,

“Mom, are we going to hunt?”

“En, we’re going to take an antelope home today.” Gu Bing weighed her options and then replied.

“Why are you hunting antelopes for? If we’re going to hunt, you have to hunt a lion!” Hong Yan stepped forward and yelled. Gu Anran had a feeling that Hong Yan was part of the military faction among the beastmen, she actually wanted to fight lions!

“If you’re going to hunt lions, might as well go fight with Duan Ming (the first seat of the Beastmen and the leader of the lions), because no one wants lion meat.” Gu Bing glanced derisively at Hong Yan.

“In other words, lion’s meat is tough and woody, the taste is terrible.” Chi Wenyan added with a look of disgust.

“You guys can go ahead and hunt without me. Wenlin and the others took down three zebras just now and the regular hunting team already brought back this morning’s quota. There’s no need for me to hunt. I’ll go weave some grass baskets and pick up some wild fruits or vegetables on the side.” Mu Yu pointed to a few big trees not far away.

However, if Gu Anran remembered correctly, leopards may be fast but their endurance is poor. Yet, it seemed that Hong Yan had no problem at all!

“Really, that idiot, still as energetic as ever!” Chi Wenyan lamented.

“Aren’t you used to that already? Let’s go!” Gu Bing and Chi Wenyan also rushed into the grasslands.

“Alright kiddos, follow me! Don’t run around now, the forest is rather big and it’s not fun to get lost in there!” Mu Yu urged the four little beasts to follow her as she lifted the vine.

They followed obediently and watched as Mu Yu pulled some veins in her hands and started weaning baskets.

“Um, sister, is there anything we can do to help?” Mu Qingli asked first.

“Uh…help?” Mu Yu wondered and pulled at the vines while she thought of what to say,

“Ah, that’s it! You guys can help me dig up some sweet potatoes and vegetables!”

“How do we know where to dig?” Gu Anran asked. She had seen sweet potatoes before but she didn’t know how to plant nor harvest them.

“Come with me.” Mu Yu put down the half-finished basket in her hands and waved at them to follow.

They arrived at a little clearing that was covered by the shade of some threes with only a few places basking in the sunlight. The clearing was about the size of a basketball court and many little trees about one or two meters high surrounding it.

“This is where we cut down the trees a few years ago. In addition to planting seeds for new trees, we also planted a few sweet and regular potatoes here.” Mu Yu paused and then dug where she stood. After a few scoops, she quickly dug out a large red sweet potato.

“This is a sweet potato and this is a regular potato.” After digging a bit more, she held up a yellow potato. She patted the soil off her hands and continued,

“After you dig them up, divide it into two piles. While digging, be careful not to scratch their skins. You have to dig out the entire vegetable. There should be plenty in this area but take your time and have fun.”

After confirming that the four little ones were earnestly digging up sweet potatoes and regular potatoes. Mu Yu returned to her vines.

“Heup.” Gu Anran carefully dug up the sweet potatoes. This is the first time she had done something like this and it felt rather refreshing! Not every place she dug had a potato and some places in the ground had more potatoes than others. It was like they were on an adventure where they were digging for treasure!

At this moment, Mu Yu finished weaving two baskets and filled it up with potatoes. The efficiency of the four small beastmen was not bad and now the half-person tall baskets were almost half-filled and Mu Yu was almost done with her third basket.

“Ha, we’re back!” Hong Yan was the first to rush into the clearing. She had four fat rabbits in each hand and several strange birds tied to her waist.

Although, why was it rabbits! Even if they were Beastmen, they shouldn’t eat animals that were like their friends! Is this really okay?

While Gu Anran worried, the reactions of Mu Qingli and Mu Yu left her dumbfounded.

“Hey, you actually caught some rabbits! Rabbit meat is delicious!” Mu Yu completed her basket and set it in front of Hong Yan for her to prey in.

“Hahaha, I was lucky enough to stumble upon a rabbit nest! So I caught a few and brought them back with me!” Hong Yan laughed.

“Sister, is rabbit meat really that delicious?” Mu Qingli tilted her head curiously.

“En, it’s very fresh and tender but because rabbits are very cunning they are very difficult to catch. You can taste them for yourself when you’re older.” Mu Yu nodded sagely.

Wha, a little white rabbit and human girl with rabbit ears are having a serious discussion about whether or not a rabbit tasted good. This scene…was just too weird.

Bang….

Two antelope carcasses were thrown onto the ground and Gu Bing and Chi Wenyan walked over.

“The hunting is done! Did you guys get some good vegetables?” Chi Wenyan asked.

“En, some sweet potatoes, and regular potatoes were dug up. You guys can go pick some fruit as well and then we’ll go home after then.” Mu Yu looked up at the darkening sky and said.

“I got it.” Gu Bing nodded, and the three of them went over to the fruit trees.

Ah, having a human body is so convenient! Gu Anran looked down at her own little claws that were now gray and brown from the dirt. Ah….I have to wait five years to become human! Do we really have to live this kind of life till then!

After a little while, Gu Bing and the others brought back branches of fruits and placed them in the basket. Of course, the branches were thrown to the side after picking the fruits off of them. Then, the four beastmen and four young animals made their way home.

After Gu Bing and the others handed off their harvest to the person in charge of processing them, the little beasts returned to the cubs’ area.

“Ah! Let’s hurry and take a bath!” Chi Menyan, who cared about appearances the most, couldn’t wait to wash her dusty body and ran away.

“Then I’ll be going first! See you tomorrow!” Mu Qingli said energetically.

“Alright, see you tomorrow.” Gu Anran nodded and watched as the figures disappeared from sight.

“Hey, Anran, do we really have to stay in these animal forms for five years! We can’t do anything like this! Other than basking in the sun and playing with other cubs!” Hong Qingyi complained.

“What else can you do? Unless you want to go find the male villain lead and start tormenting him to pass the time.” Gu Anran said helplessly.

“Hey, that’s a good idea!” Hong Qingyi’s eyes lit up instantly.

“Whoa, I was just kidding. Last time when the young masters and misses assembled, the male villain lead did not appear. “Is that so? Go in and wash then, the water is ready already.” Bai Qing pushed Gu Anran into the house, and as expected, several small water basins filled with hot water waited for her. They hung above some kind of wooden platform that seemed to prevent water from landing on the ground.

How should she wash? Was she just going to dunk herself directly in the water?

“What’s the matter?” Bai Qing looked at Gu Anran, who had not moved for a long time, and asked in confusion.

Nothing, nothing.” Forget it, might as well just go with it. Gu Anran walked forward to the first wooden basin.

Suddenly, the basin flipped over and the hot water poured out onto her back. Wooooooo! The temperature was just right! So comfortable! It turns out you can take a bath like this! Just who invented this method!

Today, she felt that Anran was getting farther away from her as if she could no longer recognize her childhood friend (which is true) and Anran’s expression was harder to read now. Just what was going on?

Gu Anran had no idea that her friend was having a sentimental period outside and yawned tiredly. She nestled into her soft cushion and fell asleep.

The next day, Gu Anran woke up in a daze.

Awoooo! .Ah, I want to keep sleeping, but I’m so hungry….Gu Anran jumped off her cushion and swallowed another pill that allowed her to talk and looked down at her fur. She quickly smoothed her fur and it looked much better than yesterday.

She opened the door and found and a few of the wolf clan’s members crawled up lazily from their ground. When they saw the door open, they stood up and a few of their friends also ran over.

The last person to arrive was actually Bai Qing who looked more tired than before.

“Bai Qing, are you ok?” Gu Anran looked at Bai Qing, who looked rather despondent and asked with some worry.

“Ah, no, I’m good. Everything’s fine.” Bai Qing yawned. Yesterday, she stayed up thinking about her and Anran’s relationship and couldn’t sleep all night. She could only count on taking a nap later to make up for it.

“Then you should sleep some more after breakfast.” Gu Anran replied.

“Yeah.”

Today’s breakfast was barbecued mutton Gu Anran and Bai Qing both enjoyed a whole roasted lamb leg and it was incredibly delicious! The meat is fragrant and tender and didn’t have that weird taste mutton usually had. Gu Anran previously couldn’t stand that taste before but the meat was handled extremely well.

After eating breakfast, there was no gathering of little young masters and missed like before. Probably because these kinds of things don’t happen every day. Instead, the cubs just rolled around and played like usual.

“Bai Qing, you should return and rest first. Don’t tire yourself out.” Gu Anran noticed Hong Qingyi, Mu Qingli, and Chi Mengyan not too far away and quickly said a sentence to Bai Qing before running over to her friends.

Bai Qing quietly watched as Gu Anran left her behind, and felt a little disappointed. She didn’t understand it. Has she changed or was it Gu Anran?

“Anran, what’s your relationship with that girl?” Hong Qingyi smirked and playfully hit Gu Anran with her shoulder.

“What relationship! Aren’t they just friends of the same race!” Mu Qingli pouted. Although she said this, her eyes stared intensely at Gu Anran, as if she wanted Gu Anran to verify her words.

This contradiction made Gu Anran’s mouth twitched but she didn’t laugh for the sake of a certain little Tsundere.

“She grew up with me, so she’s kinda like a sister to me.”

“See! See! I told you so!” Mu Qingli stuck her tongue out towards Hong Qingyi.

“Alright, enough. Have you forgotten what today is? Everyone is busy preparing right now!” Chi Mengyan stopped the two from breaking out into a fight.

“What day is it?” Gu Anran asked.

“You actually forgot?” Chi Mengyan’s eyes widened,

“Today is the last day of the year. The cubs today will hold a competition for long-distance running, sprinting, long-jumping, tree climbing, swimming, fighting, for a total of six competitions. Every cub participates in it and as young heirs to the clan, we must participate as well.”

This was simply an elementary school sports festival! Just with some fighting and climbing added.

“But with so many little beasts, how can we compete with so many?” Hong Qingyi scratched her head.

“Nonsense, each clan only chose the top ten including the heir of the clan to come out and compete! Otherwise, the competition would be way too long.” Chi Mengyan bopped Hong Qingyi on the head like she was scolding a fool.

“Let’s do see how they’re going to pick the contestants!” Mu Qingli jumped and ran.

“Slow down. Maintain your strength, the games will start soon.” Hong Qingyi stopped Mu Qingli from wasting her energy and walked slowly towards the building everyone was gathering. All types of races were gathered outside with some having quiet discussions while others having all-out brawls. The scene was chaotic and extremely different from the usual sunbathing they saw the day before. It seems that everyone wanted to be a part of the competition!

“But there are at least 1000 animals participating, how can we finish in a day?” Hong Qingyi asked.

“Why can’t they? They split every fifty contents into a group and we compete within their groups. The top two out of all six categories, so a total of twelve, will enter the next round. Then they keep competing until they finally choose the first place winner for each category out of all 1000 animals. The winner gets to choose what they eat for dinner tonight and earn lifetime glory!” Chi Mengyan’s eyes were full of a fervent longing.

“How are the groups divided? Is it a mix of animals?” Gu Anran asked.

“Don’t you know all this already? Haven’t you watched these competitions every year?” Chi Mengyan asked.

“But it’s not the same now. We’re contestants, not bystanders this time.” Gu Anran coughed dryly and used a random excuse. She couldn’t exactly say that she was a transmigrator and didn’t know anything.

“I guess.” Chi Mengyan nodded, showing that she could still accept this answer.

“The races are not mixed exactly. Each race has ten representatives so there are exactly five different races in each group. However, don’t look down on this competition. As heirs to our clans, if we are removed from the first round, then we’ll lose a lot of face. Even if we become strong later, this will be a stain on our reputations for a lifetime. So it is common practice to support your clan’s young master or miss to the end.”

So out of the twelve winners in a group, five are young masters or misses most of the time. But wouldn’t it be hard for others to get ahead like this? How can others win glory if the heirs of the clan take most of the spots? What if one of the heirs took multiple winning spots in different categories?

“What if someone is in the top two for two different categories?” Gu Anran asked.

“Then they’ll ask them to choose one and replace the other spot with a runner up!” Mu Qingli said.

“Speaking of the evening banquet, what are we doing?”

“Of course we’re going to be celebrating, chatting, singing, dancing, ah…and there is the finale before the end of the year which is the selection for the next ten seats!” Mu Qingli said excitedly.

“The ten seats of the Beastmen clans have to be re-selected?” Gu Anran asked in astonishment.

“Yes, and no. Ten arenas will be set up around the campfire tonight. The ten seats each have their own arena and whoever thinks they have the ability can challenge the seat they want. The lower-ranked Beastmen races can challenge the higher-ranked ones and the rankings will be swapped if the lower-ranked won.” Mu Qingli explained.

“Wouldn’t they choose to tire out their opponent by challenging several times? How is this fair?” Hong Qingyi asked.

“Don’t worry, there is a limit on how many times you can challenge the seat. The seat can only be challenged ten times and they let the holder of the seat take many breaks in between. If the holder of the seat is badly injured, the fight can be delayed till the next day. However, most of the time this doesn’t happen unless you’re one of those battle crazy militants from the military faction.” Chi Mengyan shrugged.

Wuuuuuuu…….

Something resembling a horn resounded throughout the grassland, and all the cubs went to the platform where the young masters gathered yesterday in unison.

“Let’s go, it’s about to start.” Chi Mengyan shook her fur and followed the flow of beasts while Mu Qingli, Gu Anran, and Hong Qingyi followed her.

It was more spectacular than last time with each animal race neatly lined up in their own row with the heir standing in the first spot.

The four little beasts nodded at each other and then quickly ran off to their groups. Behind Gu Anran was Bai Qing and the silver-gray wolf’s compulsion was much better now. She seemed to have reset now but this still might affect her performance later. As the closest friend of the original owner of this body, Gu Anran asked after her friend.

“After resting for a little bit, are you feeling any better?” Gu Anran asked in a low voice.

“En, much better.” Bai Qing nodded.

“Just do you best, don’t hurt yourself.” Gu Anran reminded her. They were still growing after all. It wasn’t worth the gain to hurt your body for temporary bravery!

“I know.”

Gu Anran heard Bai Qing’s reply and then nodded as she sat in front of Bai Qing. The ten seats of the Beastmen were now standing and the one who stepped forward was the first seat, the leader of the clans.

“Everyone, I believe you all know who I am. But for those who don’t know, I am Duan Ming. It’s the end of the year and the race you have all been looking for is about to start! Our competition is divided into six events: long-distance running, sprinting, long-jumping, tree climbing, swimming, and fighting. The first will be long-distance running. This is a test of endurance for you children. From this end of the grassland to the other will be a total of 20 kilometers. Water will be prepared for you so there is no need to worry about dying of dehydration.”

“The long-jump is of course fixed. We’ll see who can jump farther and you can run up before you jump but you can’t use tools.”

Why would we use tools? Do you think we’re doing the pole vault? She looked down at her four limbs. And how was she supposed to hold the pole! You need to have training to use a pole anyways!

“As for swimming, we are setting a time limit of 30 minutes. During this period, you will be given a half-empty basket with a rope attached to it. Then we’ll see which one of you can catch the most fish! The one with the heaviest basket wins!”

Wait a minute! Excuse me?! This is totally different from the swimming races I know! This is not a swimming competition but a fish catching competition, okay? Is this so we can have more fish to eat later? Although, the competitions will be entertaining and food production will go up so this was a good calculator! However….if the swimming contest is like this then the tree climbing….

“When you climb the tree, you must pick fruit in the range in the area we designated. Remember that the ripe fruit is counted, and the rotten or unripe fruit is not counted.”

Ah….as expected!

“Finally, for the fighting competition, there will be a circle drawn used as a boundary. One-on-one and whoever crossed the boundary loses! Are there any questions?”

“Then let me hear you yell! The games have begun!” The loud roar stimulated the young blood and the cubs cheered loudly.
