Having survived that, he let out a sigh of relief as if a heavy load had been lifted. He closed the door properly and walked toward the wardrobe, picking up the coat hanger that had been thrown to the ground.
As he bent down, the wardrobe door beside him unexpectedly swung open. Before he could grasp the situation, a hand reached out, pulling him into the wardrobe.
Xue Lan let out an exclamation as he collided with the darkness of the wardrobe. In a fluster, he clumsily seized the hand of the individual, exhibiting a mix of embarrassment and disarray, before barely managing to steady himself. Meanwhile, the perpetrator of this mischievous act regarded him with an air of calmness amidst all the chaos.
Xue Lan withdrew his hand, upset. “All right, he’s left. You should also leave!”
“Shh.” Duan Wenzheng observed the child’s expression painted with distress in the dim illumination within the closet’s darkness. He muttered, “You’re ushering me away as soon as we finish? It’s the first time I’ve seen someone conduct an affair so openly and shamelessly.”
“W-Who’s having an affair?!”
Xue Lan’s face instantly flushed red. Frightened, he hastily attempted to exit the wardrobe.
Duan Wenzheng restrained him. “Ey, don’t be so upset. I came here to apologize. I even stayed here in the wardrobe to reflect…”
“Who’s upset?” Xue Lan pried open the hand with a hint of irritation. “Hurry and go back. Wind will be quite anxious if he can’t find you later.”
“Let him be anxious then.” Duan Wenzheng seemed unwilling to leave. He trailed after Xue Lan out of the wardrobe and settled on the bed. “We haven’t settled our business, have we?”
“Wha-what business?”
When Duan Wenzheng mentioned “business,” Xue Lan felt it wasn’t decent. Yet, as Duan Wenzheng caught his evasive glance this time, his gaze softened, coaxing him to settle beside him with a gentle allure.
“Isn’t there an upset child here? How could I dare to leave if I don’t comfort you properly?”
While Duan Wenzheng may have wielded a playful tone before, this moment revealed a countenance adorned solely with a tender gentleness.
Xue Lan silently gazed at the unexpected sincerity etched across Duan Wenzheng’s face, a slight bewilderment lingering in his own expression. “I’m really not upset.”
Duan Wenzheng still did not believe him. He retrieved his phone. “I’ve seen it all.”
As Duan Wenzheng scrolled through Weibo, Xue Lan’s heart skipped a beat, but upon closer inspection, he realized that the content Duan Wenzheng wanted to show him wasn’t from his covert sockpuppet account but rather from his public Weibo main account.
He looked at it for a long time, perplexed. Still, he couldn’t discern what was wrong.
“You changed your name to ‘Vegetable Lan-zi,’ and you’re still saying you’re not upset?”
“…”
“The earlier shot was truly unintentional. In that scenario, I solely aimed to eliminate the medic,” Duan Wenzheng continued to explain. “Of course, it was also a mistake for me to be your opponent, but it’s not up to me to decide. Don’t you think so?”
“I’m not upset, really,” Xue Lan conveyed. “Besides, your rapid shot earlier was incredible.”
Observing Xue Lan’s glance at the Weibo page and his uttering those words, Duan Wenzheng grew increasingly convinced of his distress. He reiterated, “It’s just that receiving such a thoughtful gift, the keyboard from you, filled me with such joy that I, quite thoughtlessly… let slip. I’ve never received such a gesture, especially from you. Fortunately, I realized my mistake promptly and stopped…”
As the person beside him began an unstoppable torrent of words, Xue Lan felt an abrupt throbbing in his head.
He couldn’t tell Duan Wenzheng that…Vegetable Lan-zi had no connection to him – that it was simply due to the netizens’ low standards for a CP, right?
Xue Lan was rendered speechless, utterly at a loss for words. Duan Wenzheng eventually ceased, his gaze lingering on Xue Lan’s still-flushed cheeks. He gently rested the back of his hand against Xue Lan’s forehead.
“Why is it still warm?”
The unexpected gesture from Duan Wenzheng caught Xue Lan off guard. Yet, the touch of the cool hand against his forehead intensified the warmth in his cheeks. Xue Lan hastily pushed his hand away. “I-It’s not that. I don’t have a fever.”
After Duan Wenzheng confirmed that he was telling the truth, he sighed in relief.
Before Xue Lan could respond, the hand he had just pushed away returned, covering his forehead once more — this time, exerting a firm, kneading pressure!
Xue Lan hadn’t anticipated the sudden action. Taken off guard by the vigorous kneading, his forehead bore the mark of a reddened friction when he finally reacted. Swiftly pulling away Duan Wenzheng’s hand once more, he shielded his now-rubbed-raw forehead.
But Duan Wenzheng maintained an unwaveringly stubborn expression, poised to recommence despite Xue Lan’s resistance. “It’s dirty. I’ll help you wipe it.”
Xue Lan protected his forehead. “Wind didn’t even touch it!”
His remark caused a subtle curl at the corner of Duan Wenzheng’s lips. Nodding in contentment, he advised, “That’s wise. You should keep your distance from such an eccentric individual in the future.”
Xue Lan suddenly sensed himself ensnared by Duan Wenzheng’s presence, an unforeseen tension knotting in his head. A headache, born from Duan Wenzheng’s enigmatic nature that set one on edge, began to take hold.
Wen Yan did not touch his head. If he did… Duan Wenzheng wouldn’t hesitate to burst his head, would he?!!
“Of course —” Duan Wenzheng’s eyes curved, their depths seemingly tranquil, akin to a serene sea of stars “— I’m an exception.”
“…”
“Victory or defeat in a match is normal. Even if you’re my opponent, I would hope that we could have a square fight.”
To protect his tough situation, Xue Lan looked up at the clock. “So I’m not upset. It’s late, shouldn’t you go back?”
Unexpectedly, Duan Wenzheng not only refrained from rising to depart, but he also leaned against the bed.
“I’ve hidden, and now I’m out of favor, so you’re kicking me out? I even went as far as hiding in the wardrobe to avoid him. Wasn’t it to avoid going back?” Standing by the bed, he arched an eyebrow, observing the enraged child. He went on to say, “I’m not going anywhere today. I’m sleeping here.”
The author has something to say:
Lanlan: Of course, you’re exceptionally pleasant. You’re an exception!!!!
