I’ll Listen To My Wife
Wu Miaomiao did not expect to hear such a story and became moved by his recount.
“Since your sister’s soul piece has integrated with your own for over 700 years, you would definitely suffer through extreme pain if you were to forcibly remove her soul piece.” When one’s soul was forcefully torn apart by another, the pain that he would experience was equivalent to or even worse than having one’s body sliced apart over a thousand times. As a ghost being in the form of a soul, Ghost Gentleman could not fall into a comatose state during this process and would be fully conscious while feeling the extreme pain of over thousands cuts on his body.
“Trust me. I have already experienced even more pain 700 years ago.” His sister was willing to split her own soul for him 700 years ago. Why would he not be able to do the same for her? To be exact, he would have forcibly separated his sister’s soul piece within him and returned it to her ages ago if he had the ability to do so.
“You mentioned just now that you made a deal with my witch senior previously—using your powers to exchange for one’s ability to see light again. Was this person that you were helping your sister?” Wu Miaomiao asked.
“Yes.” Ghost Gentleman answered with a melancholic expression. “I knew that my younger sister would be born with a handicapped body in her subsequent reincarnation. Therefore, I went out searching for her after she had reincarnated only to discover that the ability that she had lost was her sight. After that, I found a witch and used a hundred years of my powers to exchange for a cure for her eyes.”
“It’s no wonder that your power level only seemed to be at 600 years.” Wu Miaomiao nodded her head while looking deep in thought. She continued asking, “Since you have found my witch senior long ago and that particular senior already had a near-maturity doll, why didn’t you just request for her to extract the soul piece from your soul? Instead, you waited till now.”
“It was not possible at that time.” Ghost Gentleman explained. “My malice was overpoweringly strong when I turned into a malicious ghost. The only reason why my soul did not disintegrate at that time was because my sister’s soul piece replenished me. So if I attempted to separate the soul piece at that time….”
“Your soul would disintegrate into nothing?” Wu Miaomiao raised her brow.
“I would not be afraid if it was just as you said.” Ghost Gentleman knew that Wu Miaomiao had misunderstood that he was afraid of death. He was not angered by her reaction. Instead, he continued to explain in a calm manner, “After I transformed into a malicious ghost, I immediately went searching for my enemies and exterminated their entire family clan. Even if I was on the verge of disintegration, I had no regrets as I had already successfully taken revenge upon my enemies. However, as my sister’s soul piece had already integrated fully with my soul, if I were to disintegrate there and then while the witch forcibly guarded my sister’s soul piece, the remaining malice after my disintegration would latch onto my sister’s soul piece.”
Wu Miaomiao understood what he meant. One only needed to refer to the case of Dong Yongyuan’s aunt to see the consequences of being possessed by the malice of a malicious ghost. On top of that, Ghost Gentleman’s powers were nearly equivalent to a ghost general’s. Not long after his sister recovered her sight, she would probably turn into a ghost-like being. After her death, she would then inherit Ghost Gentleman’s powers—equivalent to a ghost general’s—while being unable to reincarnate forevermore.
“Can your soul currently handle this affliction?” Wu Miaomiao questioned.
Ghost Gentleman nodded in response and subsequently bowed lowly towards her. He pleaded, “I implore you to assist. After this, Yuan Bai is willing to be bound to a blood pact with you and serve you for life.”
This blood pact that Ghost Gentleman spoke of was similar to the blood sacrifice ritual that the Diao family had used on him. All blood descendents of Wu Miaomiao would be able to exert control over him. Moreover, as Ghost Gentleman was willing to be bound in this pact, the effectiveness of the pact would even be stronger.
“No, when we witches do business, we would only accept 10% of our customers’ assets as payment. I don’t need you to pledge your service for life. I refuse to let you blemish our witch clan’s rules.” Wu Miaomiao responded in disdain.
Ghost Gentleman was shocked by her answer. His eyes reflected his current complex emotions.
Ji Lang glanced at his wife and asked, “Do you really show so much deference to this principle?”
“Of course.” Wu Miaomiao heard her dearest husband ‘praising’ her and could not help but puff out her chest and raise her head up with pride. She said in a very high pitch, “Integrity is of utmost importance when we Witch Clan do business.”
Ji Lang chuckled but did not say anything in response. He just felt that the current Wu Miaomiao was extremely cute.
Ghost Gentleman was an acute person and instantly understood that Wu Miaomiao had agreed to his request. As such, he immediately gave her a very deep bow—nearing reaching the ground—in gratefulness, “I sincerely thank you, Witch.”
“Don’t thank me so quickly. We still need to work out the exact details of the payment.” Just like the proverb saying ‘a fall in the pit, a gain in your wit’, after Wu Miaomiao was hurt by the destitute case of the 500 yuan payment, she had picked up the habit to discuss the payment first before taking any action.
“Please proceed.” Ghost Gentleman replied in a generous manner.
After all, how could he not be feeling generous. He had originally intended to give up his entire lifetime worth of assets and even sell his own self. However, Wu Miaomiao rejected his offer and insisted on discussing payment terms with him. Regardless of the outcome of this discussion, he would ultimately fork out a lot less than what he had initially intended.
“Firstly, I must have that 800,000 reward payment from the Metaphysical Association. If your previous owner alone is not worth that amount, you have to pay me the outstanding figure.” Wu Miaomiao demanded.
“Certainly.” Ghost Gentleman agreed.
“Secondly, my service charging standard is 10% of my customer’s life assets. But you….” She sized up the ghost and continued in a troubled tone, “Your life assets aren’t easy to calculate.”
“You can just name a figure at your will.” Ghost Gentleman responded.
“No way. I refuse to take more payment than required from you. Receiving more payment would go against the rules. If it comes to this, I’d rather not take this business deal” Wu Miaomiao replied.
“Eh?” Ghost Gentleman was stunned. What did she mean by this? Could it be that if he was unable to evaluate how much his life assets were worth, Witch would not take on this business? How could this be?
Ghost Gentleman fixed his gaze at Wu Miaomiao as he waited anxiously. He did not dare to say anything to urge Wu Miaomiao as he was afraid that she would get annoyed by him and change her decision to help him.
Wu Miaomiao racked her brains hard. How should she calculate the life assets of this ghost? She had only done business with humans and never once had she done business with a ghost before.
“Ahh, my head hurts.” She looked towards Ji Lang for help. “My dearest husband, I don’t know how to calculate this.”
“In that case, let’s just reject this business.” Ji Lang replied straightforwardly.
“No-…no, please accept, please do accept this business.” Ghost Gentleman became frantic. “How-… how about this?”
Ghost Gentleman’s brain started churning rapidly, he swiftly said, “I’m a malicious ghost, and thus has no financial assets. If we were to talk about my assets as a ghost, it would most probably refer to my powers. How about I pay you 10% of my powers?”
“Your powers are built on the foundation of your resentment. What are you intending? Trying to pass your resentment to me?” Wu Miaomiao glanced at him.
“Then…then….” Thoughts and ideas flew about in Ghost Gentleman’s mind. Soon, he thought of another idea. “How about this? I won’t pass you my powers, but you can still use them. I will sell myself to you for the period of 10% of your life span.”
Wu Miaomiao’s brows creased.
Ghost Gentleman continued explaining, “Logically, we should gauge the period based on my lifespan. However, as I am a malicious ghost and unable to reincarnate, as long as my soul does not disintegrate, I would be in an immortal state. Therefore, it is not possible to calculate the period based on my lifespan, so let’s use your lifespan as the gauge.”
“But I’m not sure how long I will live.” Wu Miaomiao replied.
“In that case, we can base it on the average lifespan of the Witch Clan members. Or we can consider 100 years as the time limit.” Ghost Gentleman immediately suggested.
This was the most impartial method that he could think of. It should fit the Witch Clan’s rules right?
Wu Miaomiao was still hesitant after hearing his suggestion. She was uncertain whether his plan would work as she had never attempted such a method before.
“If not, we can do it this way.” Ghost Gentleman gritted his teeth before continuing, “I will serve you for 10 years. At the same time, I will sign a contract with you that requires me to self-detonate after 100 years. In this case, 10 years would be considered as 10% of my lifespan.”
“You-….” Wu Miaomiao was touched.
Ghost Gentleman was willing to self-destruct for the sake of returning his younger sister’s sight?
“10 years is too long. Who knows if you would find a way to break the contract 100 years later, or if you would do something to hurt us just to break the contract. Just like what you are doing to your previous owner right now.” Ji Lang suddenly remarked.
Ghost Gentleman’s mind went blank for a moment. After which, determination flashed across his eyes. “In that case, you can set the time limit.”
“One day.” Ji Lang shot out swiftly. “You will help us capture Ghost Divinator in one day. Miaomiao would take the man and exchange him for money with the Metaphysical Association and afterwards, she would help you heal your sister. A 10-day lifespan period should be enough for you, right?”
Ghost Gentleman was startled. In that case, he could only live for 10 more days.
Ji Lang observed the hesitation within Ghost Gentleman’s eyes as a hint of ridicule crossed his own eyes.
Ji Lang had mentioned to Wu Miaomiao in the past that he saw no good in any human being. He told her that he had always used the most negative human traits as a gauge when appraising someone’s character. And just like what he had said, he did it the same way. At the beginning, when Ghost Gentleman explained the reason behind why he did not separate his sister’s soul piece the very first time he encountered a witch was due to the disintegration of his soul and the passing on of the remaining malice to his sister. However, this was only the ghost’s side of the story. After all, no one knew or could verify if it was because of the ghost being afraid of passing the malice over to his younger sister, or he was just simply afraid of disintegrating into nothingness.
Being afraid of death was an inherent characteristic of a human being. Ghosts were originally humans—so this ghost would naturally be the same.
Actually, Ji Lang did not want to interfere in this matter. After all, this was the affairs of the Witch Clan. Whether to accept the business deal or not should be up to Wu Miaomiao to decide. However, from Ghost Gentleman’s suggestions earlier on, Ji Lang knew that if Wu Miaomiao were to accept this business deal, she would definitely need to keep Ghost Gentleman by her side—not because she wanted the ghost’s powers, but because she needed to fulfil the contract.
This Ghost Gentleman was too cunning. From the very beginning when they first met, to the point where the ghost raised his request, every single step was interlinked, as if it was already planned right from the start. With the ghost’s intellect and powers, how could that foolish cat even steal the finger phalanx in the first place? It must be due to the ghost’s plot that allowed the cat to succeed. He had sworn to himself that he would look after Miaomiao more, and thus he would never allow such risk to stay by Miaomiao’s side. Ji Lang did not care about the story which Ghost Gentleman had told them about his background and his younger sister—regardless of the story’s genuineness.
In his heart, he was not bothered by any other person’s emotions, besides Wu Miaomiao’s.
“My dearest husband.” Wu Miaomiao tugged on Ji Lang’s shirt sleeves. She waited for Ji Lang to turn his head around to face her before prompting him. “Your phone rang just now. It sounded like someone sent you a message.”
Ji Lang gazed at Wu Miaomiao while she sent suggestive glances at him. Musing over her actions, he then took out his phone from his pocket and unlocked the screen with a swipe of his finger. As expected, he spotted a WeChat message notification—it was a message from Wu Miaomiao.
Wu Miaomiao: My dearest husband, isn’t 10 days a little too short? This Ghost Gentleman seems quite pitiful. Besides, if we let him stay, he indeed could help Wawa improve.
It was obvious that she was trying to plead for Ghost Gentleman but at the same time, she did not want to question him in front of others.
He did not turn his head around to look at Wu Miaomiao. Instead, he typed out a reply message using his phone.
Ji Lang: Wawa only requires his resentment. Once he’s dead, I can extract it.
Previously, the malice within Dong Yongyuan’s aunt was also extracted out by Ji Lang. If he was able to do it during then, he should be able to do it this time round too.
Wu Miaomiao took a look at her phone before looking at Ghost Gentleman. She then let out a sigh.
Ji Lang glanced at Wu Miaomiao before sending her another message.
Ji Lang: Of course, since the person he is asking for help from is you. If you wish to take on the request, just do it.
He was only acting as her guardian, so it was still up to Wu Miaomiao to make a decision.
When Wu Miaomiao read Ji Lang’s message, she replied immediately without any hesitation.
Wu Miaomiao: No, I’ll listen to my dearest husband. Even though this ghost is very pitiful, there are a lot of pitiful people out there in this world, but I only have one dearest husband.
Ji Lang’s heart started pounding fiercely when he saw the latest reply from her on WeChat.
Ji Lang: If he accepts my proposed condition earlier on, you can accept his second suggestion.
The second suggestion was to use 10% of Wu Miaomiao’s lifespan as the time period in which Ghost Gentleman had to serve her.
Her eyes lit up and she nodded her head resolutely. She then kept her mobile phone and shifted her gaze towards Ghost Gentleman. At this moment, Ghost Gentleman was also looking at her.
To be exact, Ghost Gentleman was already looking at the couple when they were both holding a mobile phone in each of their hands, and sending messages to each other right in front of him. It was just that he noticed they were still discussing amongst themselves and thus he did not wish to interrupt them. He had some ideas as to what they were discussing. However, it was clearly apparent that between the couple, the person called ‘Ji Lang’ had a more significant influence. Therefore, Ghost Gentleman did not harbour any hopes and could only continue to wait silently.
“What’s your decision?” Wu Miaomiao asked straightforwardly.
“I agree.” Ghost Gentleman replied without hesitation. “I’m fine with just 10 days.”
Actually, experiencing soul disintegration was not much worse than becoming someone else’s ghost slave.
“Alright, I will accept this business deal. However… since I had never used such a payment method before, I’m not sure if the transaction will be successful.” Wu Miaomiao intentionally paused at this moment. She then continued, “How about this? We will use your proposals, and try them one by one. We will use whichever payment method that succeeds. For the first solution, let’s base it on my lifespan. My master lived till the age of 120, I believe mine should be about the same as hers.”
Ghost Gentleman blinked his eyes multiple times. He looked at Wu Miaomiao in a daze before shifting to look towards Ji Lang. He then asked hesitantly, “Is-… is it alright?”
“I’ll listen to her.” Ji Lang replied in an aloof tone.
“Did you hear that? My dearest husband listens to me.” A huge beam formed on Wu Miaomiao’s face. She then struck a proud pose—putting her hands on her hips and raising her head high.
“Yep, I’ll listen to you.” Ji Lang echoed after her in an earnest manner with a faint smile on his face. He even nodded his head.
The shrewd Liu Meier was speechless.
The wise Ghost Gentleman was also speechless.
Were they trying to cheat ghosts!
With their extensive life experience, both ghosts had already seen through who was actually listening to whom amongst this couple.
