Chapter 05 - The Incident At The School Gate

4 min read981 words

We are in the spring season, which is when flowers begin to bloom.

It’s been two months since my father advised me to take the exam to get into school.

This is the real capital, 《Mizgard》 .

It is the biggest city in this country, which exists next to the Dark City.

I left my rented house in the slums of the city where I usually stay and traveled to the suburbs of Mizgard, the royal capital.

[Oh… So this is the Royal Academy of Magic…]

The school building will be made of stone, decorated entirely with dragon sculptures, it looked more like a work of art than a building.

There were two reasons why I decided to join the “Royal Academy of Magic” , among the many other schools of magic.

First, the tuition is cheap.

For some reason, the tuition in this school is less than a tenth of that of other schools.

It is ironic that, although it is a school for the rich, the school’s facilities are paid for by taxes.

And secondly, the location of the school is good.

The school is located a short walk from the Capital Real, and is also a good distance from my apartment in the favelas.

Of course, the fact that the conditions are so favorable, it should become very popular among students.

[Wow~. I’m so nervous~!]

[It’s okay! If I demonstrate my usual skill level, I’ll definitely pass!]

Well, of course this will happen.

The road to school was already filled with children my age.

[Hey, look. Isn’t that Louis the son of the Buster family?]

[Really!? As expected from the incredible Royal Academy of Magic…! It seems that all the stars of high society are gathered here.]

Except for me, all the other students seem to be the sons of nobles.

Well, plebs who can use magic are a rare existence, so there’s nothing strange about it.

By the way, it’s easy to distinguish between the nobles and the commoners.

The person who has a medal on his collar is a nobleman.

Those who do not have it are considered commoners.

There are some people who disguise themselves as commoners without wearing the medal, but most of these people are like me, living in the world of shadows.

[Don’t be silly! You’re just a nobleman of a star, and you still want to talk to me!]

Hmm…? It seems there’s a big crowd in front of the school gate.

It looks like there’s some kind of problem, and I better not get involved in it.

[These are the sacred grounds of the Royal Academy of Magic! This is not the place where a garbage like you should come to!]

[What is this! I don’t believe, that a 1 star nobleman is not allowed to take the exam! I don’t see it written anywhere.]

It seems there is a discussion among the nobles.

In front of the school gates, a blond man and a redheaded woman are arguing with each other.

[This is certainly not written, but look around you! They are all 2-star or 3-star noblemen! The written rules are not all that matters, but understanding the other side of them is a nobleman’s obligation!]

The position of a nobleman, can be measured approximately by the number of medals he has on his collar.

1 star, is a weak nobleman in a position that has no territory.

2 stars, is a nobleman of the upper-middle class with his own territory.

3 stars, indicates a great nobleman with a vast territory, and a great number of commercial rights.

[That’s right! It’s bold of you to go against Deluc-sama, only with your position!]

[Why don’t you read the weather and get out of the exam!]

The companions of the noble blond (whose name was called Deluc) all attack the woman with red hair.

[Listen well, woman. In noblemen’s society, the number of stars is everything! Those with low stars are absolutely overwhelmed by those with high stars! If you don’t know such a simple rule, you must be in the wrong place, isn’t it?]

[~~~~!]

Hmm.

The redheaded woman who had been terrorized by the group of high-level nobles seemed to be completely helpless.

[Hey, what’s going on?]

I approached a blue-haired woman who was nearby, to collect some information.

[Oh, like this. The girl there is my childhood friend… As soon as I got into school, they kicked me out… So…]

I see.

It seems I have been subjected to the selfish and difficult habits of the noble blonde.

It’s a common bad habit for high-level nobles not to be satisfied unless everything goes as they wish.

[Hey, woman. I’m a three-star nobleman, you’ll have to pay for offending me, won’t you? But if you become my wife, I can reconsider my decision, okay?]

The blond man who grabbed the woman’s hair, had a disgusting smile on his face.

My goodness.

It’s a shame that you were mistreated on the grounds of the Royal Magic Academy.

I’m sure your pride in being a noble flight away.

[Excuse me, can you let me through?]

I’m sorry, but I don’t have enough free time to watch a fight between noblemen.

I walked among the crowd of spectators, and decided to go directly to the school building.

[ [ […!?] ] ]

I think I’m imagining things.

As soon as they saw me, I felt a strange tension occurring among the nobles around me.

[Hey, look at that. That guy’s collar…!]

Someone inside the crowd of nobles screamed.

[Zero stars… he would be…!]

[Ah, it can’t be…? Why are the ordinary people here…?]

What can be so rare? The ordinary people.

From my point of view, a bunch of noblemen with their heads held high lined up like this is much more unusual.
