In all these ancient Chinese novels where a man can have many wives/concubines, the ruffian ‘father’ often seems to forget that the MC is also his flesh and blood. Sure, he/she may have come from an unfavored wife, but the baby still carries half of his bloodline. It’s like the children are extensions of their mothers. With so many children, the father acts as if he is entitled to ‘pick’ the ones he likes – the ones borne of favored wives – and unreservedly ignore children he dislikes by association with their mothers.

Like, hello? They are also YOUR offspring. It is rare to see a father recognize them as his children and come to see them as individuals of their own character – because all he sees is their status as xxxx’s son/daughter, not HIS child. Only when it is convenient, will the despicable father claim parenthood. It’s disgusting.

It’s terribly immoral and irresponsible, and I hope this is only exaggerated in novels (I would like to claim it a cliche background for MC’s to suffer in order for the face-slapping to happen), although I wouldn’t be surprised if it were true. Considering the large percentage of female babies in orphanages during the One Child policy in China, I’m pretty sure many families were willing to discard the less ‘useful’ child. Other than some families who were literally forced to choose, there were probably families who chose to try again for a male when their first child turned out female. Considering this voluntary abandonment of their own child, who knows how far this disconnect between parent and child can extend?

Thank you for the chapters. I’m loving our high IQ-low EQ protagonist already!
