Chapter 2: He Looks So Good, He Must Be My Father
—The fourth day.
Today’s rations: Bun x1.
Hmph.
When the sky turned dark, I discovered something. Master actually hadn’t eaten or drank anything for the whole day, but he still wasn’t hungry.
When I thought about it carefully, I realized that other than when he snatched half of my bun yesterday, he didn’t seem to have eaten anything.
…Could it be that he wasn’t human?
That wasn’t right. Then, could it be that he was that father of mine? I remember that my father also didn’t eat nor drink. Usually, he wouldn’t do anything but sleep. I’ve always felt that my father would one day starve to death.
But the most important thing was that, I felt like I was going to starve to death. So, I told my father, hungry..
My father said, I was his rations.
I didn’t believe it.
Even after a long time, my father didn’t eat me, as expected.
Hmph, it was just a cheap trick meant to deceive children.
I sat on the chair and propped up my head. Then, I fell into a daze, staring at Master’s nearby expressionless face.
Master had a book spread out in front of him and he was holding a pen. I didn’t know what he was writing about.
To be honest, I didn’t think my master was like a demon. He was a bit like an immortal, the kind that stood high in the clouds, surrounded by clouds and mist. But my father said that there were no immortals in this world, since all the immortals had already died. While my father said this, he waved his hand, killing several people flying in the sky. At that time, there was a group of people on the opposite side that cursed my father, saying that he was sick, his brain was sick, his everywhere was sick, and that he wouldn’t have any children and his whole family line would definitely die out.
I watched from the side, watching my father being sweared at by a bunch of people, and even being mocked and insulted. I think that my father was indeed sick, but I was still a little unhappy. When all was said and done, my father was still my father. Even if he was sick, he was still my father. That bunch of people had come specifically to block his path, not only shouting for his death, but also swearing at him.
Just, it was a pity that I was only unhappy at that moment. Because not long after, all those people disappeared.
Including my father.
Ah.
I sighed again.
Master had probably finished writing, so he set aside his pen. “What’s wrong?”
I said, “Can I not drink the medicine later?”
That medicine was really very bitter. I felt that one meat bun wasn’t enough to suppress that taste. But, Master didn’t seem like he was going to buy anything else for me to eat. Oh right, he had said yesterday that eating too much wasn’t good for cultivation.
I felt that he was a little miserly. I looked at the clothes Master was wearing. They didn’t look cheap at all, so Master must have money.
He had money, but he still didn’t buy me anything to eat. Why did he have to be such a penny pincher?
Because he was miserly.
After I thought up to here, I felt even more depressed.
My great meat bun business was so far away. It seemed like it would take forever to reach it.
Master didn’t know what I was thinking about. When he saw me frowning, he reached out to rub my forehead.
It was no different than usual. Obviously, I had already recovered from my illness.
Since I wasn’t sick anymore, I naturally wouldn’t have to drink medicine.
I became very happy when I realized I didn’t have to drink medicine. I tugged at Master’s sleeve, looking at him with gleaming eyes. “Master, let’s go out to play.”
I tugged at Master’s sleeve, but without a word, he pulled his sleeve back. He replied indifferently with the sentence, “You should practice writing your characters.”
As he said that, he pushed the book that was in front of him towards me. Then, he instructed, “Look over it once.”
I felt a little dumbfounded. I took the book and looked at it. It was densely packed with a mass of characters. I didn’t know what happened, but it was as if they had come alive; one by one, they rose up out of the book and burrowed into my brain.
Then, I passed out.
It hurt.
—The fifth day.
—The sixth day.
—The seventh day.
…
I also didn’t know which day it was.
In any case, when I woke up, I didn’t even know who I was anymore.
I saw that there was a person next to me. He was dressed in white from head to toe, like an immortal. He was extremely good-looking.
I blinked my eyes. Then, I yelled very sincerely.
“Father!”
I felt that a person this good looking was definitely my father.
If not my father… maybe my mother?
In any case, definitely from my family.
Then, Master looked down slightly and glanced at me. He hadn’t even spoken yet when a person squeezed over from the side. He looked at me, full of shock and disbelief. However, he said to Master, “Martial Uncle, when did you have a son? How come he doesn’t look very much like you?”
Then, that person was beaten up.
Only then, did I discover that there were still several other people in the house. The clothes they wore were super similar to the ones my father wore. They were also all very good looking. Of course, my father was the best looking one.
Also among them was an old man. He looked at me while stroking his beard. His tone was rather rueful as he said, “Ah, Junior Brother, you were pretty fast.”
Master didn’t say anything. He only indifferently swept a glance over them.
Then, those people all ran away.
I felt like my father was a bit scary. When he became silent with a cold expression, his whole body would start to emit cold air, appearing a little horrifying.
But then I thought, this is my father. My father absolutely wouldn’t eat me.
And so, after “my father” scared away that group of people, I tugged his sleeve and looked up at him. I asked, “Father, is there anything to eat?”
Master shot me a sidelong glance. “What do you want to eat?”
My eyes lit up. I thought for a long time.
“Meat buns!”
Master: “…Yes.”
“Is there anything else?”
“Nothing else!”
When I saw him turn around, ready to leave, I thought again before calling out once more, “Father.”
Master turned around. He had yet to say anything before a small boy leapt into his arms.
I hugged “my father’s” waist. Then, I rubbed against him, wanting a foot after gaining an inch. My face carried a smile.
“Father, I missed you.”
Master pressed me back down onto the bed. “I am not your father.”
I looked at him, feeling wronged. “You are definitely my father.”
“Call me Master.
“Otherwise, I won’t give you any meat buns.”
“…Master.”
“Yes.”
Master went to get meat buns.
I sprawled on the bed, feeling very wronged.
My father definitely didn’t want me anymore.
I thought for a bit. Hmph, since he didn’t want me, I also didn’t want him!
I sat up and got off the bed, preparing to leave home. Who knew that as soon as I walked to the door, a bone-chilling cold and fluttering snowflakes rushed towards my face.
…I nearly froze to death.
I took a step back and looked at the heavy snow outside. Outside was an expanse of white that stretched as far as the eye could see, catching up to the sky and unifying the ground. It seemed like all the snow from over the years had started swirling around now. Even the forest not far away had completely become a silvery white.
I felt a little worried.
It was a bit difficult to run away from home.
I stood in the doorway. Before I could figure out how I should leave, “my father” appeared again.
Master walked over. Even though there was so much snow falling, his body was still very clean. Hung next to his body was a long sword.
I couldn’t help but take a few more glances.
Master said, I would also have one in the future.
Where the sword was, the man was. If the sword shattered, the man would die.
That was how important the sword was.
I chewed on my meat bun. My heart felt apprehensive. When did my father start to regard swords as important? Wasn’t he sick… huh? My father was sick?
I paused and looked carefully at “my father” in front of me.
It just so happened that “my father” was also looking at me. Not only was he looking at me, he was also touching me with his hand. He pondered for a bit before asking in a low voice.
“Is your brain damaged?”
I blinked.
See, my father had already started to find excuses.
He will even be able to sell me tomorrow.
Heartless!
Hmph!
Feeling sad, as if!
Translator’s Note: Well, this is my last stockpiled chapter (wasn’t much of a stockpile anyway, haha). So don’t expect the next update any time soon… I have SATs coming up. If I owe anything, I’ll get it out within the next few weeks, but my other projects are the priority, I think. October is full of SATs. After that, my tests and sports season will be over, so I’ll have more time freed up, hopefully! And there’s only 4 chapters left until I’m caught up with the raws, anyway.
