After settling things with Brian, Tang En went straight back to the lord's mansion.
"Lord, are these horse tails enough for you?"
The maid, trembling, held out a plate with a bundle of horse tails that had been cleaned.
"Enough, thanks."
Tang En casually grabbed the horse tails and prepared to go upstairs. After walking up the stairs, he suddenly turned back and said, "By the way, don't let anyone disturb me before dinner."
"Y-Yes, understood."
After giving the instructions, Tang En didn't go to find Fiona; he went straight back to his room.
He didn't have his own alchemy lab yet, so he could only make do with his bedroom for some tinkering.
"Now, let me see just how much potential magic has."
Tang En rubbed his hands together, a grin of excitement on his face. He had already set up an isolation magic array in the room, so small-scale magic experiments wouldn't be detected from the outside, allowing him to experiment with peace of mind.
To realize a press machine, the main issues were the power source and a programmable control center. Not only did it need to have on and off functions, but it also needed to control the frequency and force of the hammer. The only solution Tang En could think of was to use various magic arrays.
Fortunately, with his current magical strength, he could completely decompose and recombine various magic arrays to achieve his goal.
On Earth, power sources could be roughly divided into electricity and internal combustion engines. Tang En didn't need to think about electricity for now, even though there were magic arrays that could generate electricity, and the energy source was simpler and cleaner. He also knew the basic physical principles of electromagnetic conversion, which could be used to drive machinery. However, the biggest problem was... he couldn't find any magnets at all!
So, he could only consider mechanical work.
The principle of internal combustion engines was simple, as previously mentioned, the fundamental principle was that high temperatures caused air to expand and do work. However, it was easy to say but hard to do. First, it was difficult to find suitable, low-cost materials for the combustion chamber in Plandar. Ordinary metal materials were not durable, and magical metals were too expensive...
Secondly, the manufacturing technology here was not up to par, and the lifespan of the pistons would be very short, with a high accident rate.
So, fire magic arrays were also not considered.
Earth and water magic were hard to apply in this area. While water magic could be used as a power source for hydroelectric power, Tang En was considering a small-scale device.
"The only power source that can be considered is wind magic, right..."
Tang En stroked his chin, a whirlwind swirling in his palm.
Actually, wind magic arrays could indeed be used as a power source. Unlike Earth, the law of conservation and Newton's three laws were not entirely valid here, at least not on a microscopic level—Tang En found this the most bizarre point.
No matter which type of magic, when cast, Tang En could clearly feel that nothing in the surroundings decreased—only his mana pool decreased. Conversely, what increased was the magic that appeared: earth, water, fire, wind, and arcane magic.
To give an example, a very common arcane spell, Mage Hand.
A mage could use Mage Hand to lift themselves into the air—lifting themselves up, which was actually possible in Plandar!
However, using wind magic as the power source for the press machine also had the same problem: the bellows and piston manufacturing issues...
"If only I had studied mechanical engineering in college..."
Tang En couldn't help but sigh. As an ordinary person, his level was about the same as a typical college graduate, only able to remember the general idea, but not the details. Now, he could only slowly figure things out.
"Wait! Is there something wrong here..."
Tang En suddenly had a flash of inspiration and crushed the whirlwind in his hand: "Damn! How could I be so stupid, why do I have to research a power source..."
Tang En had made a mistake of empiricism. On Earth, various machines needed to convert the power source—electricity and internal combustion engines—into mechanical energy. But this wasn't Earth!
This was Plandar!
Why go the long way around when magic could solve the problem directly!?
"I just want the press machine to work, why bother with a complicated power source? I just need the hammer to rise and fall properly!"
In an instant, Tang En's thoughts became clear. To describe it in one sentence, it was like eating a ginseng fruit, making every pore in his body feel unblocked.
Besides using wind magic as an indirect power source, various arcane spells could also be considered for direct work, such as using Mage Hand, but the efficiency was too low.
"Transmutation or gravity spells!"
After filtering through the arcane spells, Tang En finally decided to choose one of these two.
Some might be puzzled: gravity spells could make the hammer float and fall freely when turned off, which was understandable, but what about transmutation?
Actually, the principle was simple. Transmutation alone was useless, but when combined with the lever principle, it made sense.
Suddenly, a small piece of metal ingot appeared in Tang En's hand. If Brian saw it, he would probably go crazy.
It was a piece of dragon steel!
An extremely rare magical metal!
Just adding one ten-thousandth of dragon steel to weapons and armor could significantly enhance their performance!
The small piece of dragon steel in Tang En's hand could be exchanged for a large territory, several times larger than Ellington!
Tang En thought for a moment and cast a transmutation spell on the dragon steel ingot, reducing its volume by ten times and setting a condition: it would take effect at a frequency of 0.1 seconds.
Then... then Tang En was stunned.
The small piece of dragon steel ingot in his hand was flashing back and forth like it was having a seizure.
"Damn! Transmutation is too bizarre, I'll use gravity spells instead!"
Tang En immediately canceled the constant spell effect, and the unfortunate dragon steel ingot was finally released.
However, this was just the beginning.
In the following time, Tang En started to experiment with gravity spells. The room was occasionally filled with exclamations and the sounds of things being knocked around.
Soon it was lunchtime. Fiona, looking exhausted, arrived at Tang En's door and saw the maid standing guard.
"Where is the lord?"
The maid, a bit nervous, said, "Miss Fiona, the lord said that if he doesn't come out before dinner, no one should disturb him."
"Hmm?"
Fiona raised an eyebrow, remembering what Tang En had said in the morning. She nodded, "I see, then we'll leave him alone. Let's have lunch first."
"You go ahead, I'll stay here."
So, Fiona left directly.
Time quickly passed to the evening.
Tang En, looking disheveled, caught the dragon steel ingot flying around in the air, and after canceling the constant gravity spell, he was a bit annoyed: "This won't work. After casting the floating spell, it must be used with a restraint device."
However, Tang En soon thought of another issue: how to determine the impact point?
"Hmm... wait! I can solve it this way!"
Tang En had a flash of inspiration and came up with a solution. He would carve a gravity amplification magic array on the mold base and add a condition: the magic power output would stop immediately upon impact. After the floating spell on the hammer took effect and it rose, the gravity amplification magic would take effect again, causing the hammer to accelerate downward, forming a perfect cycle.
"As long as I cast a constant floating spell on the hammer and carve a gravity amplification magic array with a judgment function on the base, it can cancel the floating effect of the hammer. To increase the impact force, I just need to adjust the gravity amplification magic array on the base. Hahaha, I'm a genius!"
Tang En laughed maniacally.
This day had been tough for him. From initially trying to solve the power source problem to later using magic to address the core issue, it was a simple step but a difficult one to make, as he had to overcome the thinking habits formed on Earth.
This was Plandar, a world where deities existed and magic, an incomprehensible power, was present!
He had to get used to using the power of this world to solve problems.
After solving the key issue, the rest was simple. The hammer, which had been a headache for Brian and the others, could be shaped by softening the metal ingot and then re-hardening it. However, using the magical metals in his collection would be too wasteful, so after searching through his collection, he finally found a set of mithril ingots that he had almost forgotten.
"No adamantine or mithril ingots... well, mithril will do. At least it won't be as eye-catching as dragon steel or starlight gold."
Tang En muttered as he shaped the mithril ingot and then used some scraps to make the other parts, finally completing the task.
"Once they finish the other parts, the first press machine in Plandar will be born!"
Tang En put away the parts and his gaze fell on the horse tails on the table. He clapped his hands, "Almost forgot the main thing! Toothbrush! Toothbrush!"
If Brian and Edgar were present, they would probably cry. What they considered an epic event that would change the entire forging industry was not even the main thing for Tang En!
A toothbrush was more important than a press machine!?
What the hell!?
But Tang En didn't care. After coming to Plandar, many things were inconvenient, from diet and daily life to even using the toilet.
"I'll change things bit by bit over time. For now, I can only do it gradually."
Tang En muttered, casually pulling out a bundle of twigs from his bag, took one out, and put the rest back. Under the control of his magic, the twig was gradually shaped into a toothbrush.
If a knowledgeable mage or elf were present, they would probably fight to the death.
The bundle of twigs was from the World Tree.
