The door to 1-002 is knocked gently. The door swings open.
Jiang Yiyi is sitting on the sofa, quietly wiping down a scalpel still fresh off the wall. He looks over.
Lin Yi closes the door with breakfast in hand.
Jiang Yiyi looks at him, then down at the breakfast before back at Lin Yi again as he realises what he just saw.
Lin Yi turns to look at Jiang Yiyi after putting the breakfast onto the table.
The cell is silent.
“Speak.” Jiang Yiyi resumes wiping his scalpel slowly and methodically.
“I met someone yesterday.” Lin Yi is frank and to the point, “someone… very important to me.”
Jiang Yiyi waves at Lin Yi, stopping what he’s doing.
Lin Yi gulps. He may be familiar with Jiang Yiyi already, but that does not alleviate the dominant aura and fear emanating from his movements.
It is like an instinctual, biological reaction.
Slowly, he walks and stands in front of Jiang Yiyi.
Jiang Yiyi looks up at him, with that scalpel flying about his hand. It feels much more dangerous than a simple blade.
Leaning forward, Jiang Yiyi asks calmly, “did you betray me?”
The angle of looking down at Jiang Yiyi makes Lin Yi a little uncomfortable. It not only fails to diminish the aura from Jiang Yiyi any, but merely stresses out the one overlooking him.
Almost subconsciously, Lin Yi drops to the ground, crouching on one knee by Jiang Yiyi’s legs. He is looking up now.
Jiang Yiyi’s head follows, now looking down at Lin Yi.
This has shortened the distance between Lin Yi and the scalpel. Yet being close to the sharpness has instead relaxed Lin Yi quite a lot. He answers quietly, “I haven’t.”
Jiang Yiyi observes Lin Yi quietly——A disadvantage of being a known double agent is that their loyalty always remains questionable.
That is, however, not an issue for Jiang Yiyi.
As he does not doubt his own judgements.
After finishing his observation and conclusion, his scalpel has stopped spinning. The blade of it reflects Lin Yi’s expression – calm and unfazed.
“What are you feeling ashamed about?”
“Because it is difficult for me to refuse him.” Lin Yi lowers his voice a little, “which is why I have to ask for your advice. Am I to answer a few questions of his?”
“A few questions…” Jiang Yiyi puts the scalpel away to the side, then drags Lin Yi back up to standing by his arm.
“From someone you have difficulty refusing.” Jiang Yiyi lets go, and gestures to the sofa to the side, “the leader of that Knights of the Dark?”
Knights of the Dark? How did he just come up with that name in a split second?
Lin Yi’s face visibly twitches, but he is certainly not going to risk his life correcting Jiang Yiyi’s thoughts. Speaking as if the name is correct, he says, “yes, my Mentor.” After a brief pause, and considering the circumstances, he adds, “ex-Mentor”
Jiang Yiyi is not interested in their personal relationship, but instead, notes, “so it turns out, the Shadows of Justice doesn’t just necessarily stand for justice.”
Wait, what? How did he just come up with another name in a split second?
Lin Yi finds his minds filled with confusion and disses, but decides to pretend he heard nothing.
“Either the Knights Justiciar has reached a deal with Stargaol in record time after you rebelled, or they already had dealings before you did…” Jiang Yiyi then glances at Lin Yi, “based on what I know of you, there is also a third possibility.”
“Your secret Organisation has always been a part of Stargaol’s influence.”
“Impossible.” Lin Yi denies it without a second thought, “Stargaol is entirely independent of…”
“Didn’t someone also tell me that Starfleet never intervene inside the Federation?” Jiang Yiyi points out succinctly, “now Lunatic is already on the fifth floor.”
Lin Yi is no longer as eloquent, “but, there is a difference between Stargaol and Starfleet…”
“No truly independent faction exists in politics.” Jiang Yiyi stands to walk to the dinner table, “any that were, have long since disappeared into the rivers of history.”
Lin Yi stands up and follows, “you mean to imply, Stargaol has always been working from the shadows to protect the Federation?”
Jiang Yiyi has sat down and got his chopsticks. He chuckles.
“That is the most humorous thing I’ve heard all day.”
Then he looks at Lin Yi once more, and can’t help commenting, “I really don’t think it is a good idea for you to meet with that so-called Mentor alone.”
The topic is all over the place. Lin Yi only reacts in full after a few seconds, “you would like me not to?”
Jiang Yiyi starts eating his breakfast gracefully.
“And what would you do, if I tell you not to?”
That sounds like a trick question.
Lin Yi is very quick to answer though, “it is difficult for me to refuse, but if that is your desire, then I believe I can do it.”
“Since he appears interested in me, you should ask him to come meet me directly.” Jiang Yiyi adds, “I will be glad to assist him with any questions he has.”
“That I will convey fully.” Lin Yi then asks, after a few seconds, “but I am also curious.”
Jiang Yiyi put his chopsticks down, and looks at Lin Yi once again.
“What is Stargaol trying to do?”
“To change the entire world, I suppose.” Jiang Yiyi’s tone is monotonous, bordering on dismissive, “you may have heard of this saying…”
“When you gaze into the abyss, so too does the abyss gaze right back at you.”
Lin Yi is quite surprised by the sentence which is right there on Jiang Yiyi’s file being uttered by the person himself.
“Most organisations are founded with the noblest of intentions and grandest of visions.” Jiang Yiyi claps his hands together, as he takes his time explaining, “yet when centuries pass, they have either been lost to time, or have decayed into a wholly different form. It is possible to count those that have remained true to their cause on just one hand.”
“You are saying that Stargaol…”
Jiang Yiyi pauses him with an index finger.
“Who knows if it is one of the exceptions?”
Lin Yi is silent for a few seconds, pondering the implications of what they just discussed, “can I ask another question?”
Jiang Yiyi looks at him.
“Doctor, why are you here?”
“Because I broke the law.”
How very glib.
“Doctor, you know exactly what I meant.”
“Then, you should also know exactly what I mean from my answer.”
However, what Jiang Yiyi means, is that, ‘you should know that I am saying ‘I do not know the answer myself.’’
To Lin Yi, however, the answer is totally different.
So Doctor is saying, he is not keen on him being privy to the answer?
Today is yet another day Lin Yi has delusionally misinterpreted Jiang Yiyi’s thoughts.
Author’s notes:
“I really don’t think it is a good idea for you to meet with that so-called Mentor alone.” ––Meaning, ‘because you are too dumb.’
