Lin Yi does not know about Jian Si’s internal struggles, and leaves the highly distressing building behind to go look for Magician.
Magician looks quite free——Or rather, he is actually quite free.
As his current task only consists of – making contact with, evaluating, analysing and reporting on Jiang Yiyi. As he is not going to interact with Jiang Yiyi now, he has nothing to do.
Holding a cup of tea, Magician shows quite the brilliant smile at Lin Yi running along, “you got Doctor’s permission?”
“Doctor said that if Mentor has any questions for him, then he will be glad to assist.” Lin Yi relays what Jiang Yiyi said quite faithfully.
Magician is not surprised——He’s expected an answer along those lines when Lin Yi said he has to ask Doctor first.
Doctor will never allow Lin Yi to reveal his own information unilaterally to Mentor——Which is the same as giving up initiative.
“I will arrange the time to meet with Doctor in cooperation with Mentor.” Magician has scrutinised and found no information to be obtained from Lin Yi’s expression or tone, thus asks, “I’m more curious, though, what was Doctor’s reaction?”
Lin Yi knows what he means——His reaction to Lin Yi meeting with his ex-Mentor.
He answers dryly, “if you thought Doctor was going to react at all, you’re truly underestimating him.”
“While you are quite blindly confident in him.” Magician comments, “hopefully, you are able to maintain such a positive attitude even after Doctor meets with Mentor.”
Lin Yi knows what he is saying, because he knows Mentor very well——Exceptional charisma, learned, wise, eloquent, accepting, noble. Truly, a visionary who commands respect.
If he is talking to Doctor, it is hard to say who will end up convincing whom, or if they will even reach a consensus.
No matter what, though, Lin Yi’s identity means he will be stuck between a rock and a hard place.
And Lin Yi knows that, and remains steadfast in his ways. Death is the ultimate end of people like him——And when someone has come to accept that, very few things can shake their conviction anymore.
“I will tell you the same,” Lin Yi replies calmly, “that you can still watch the spectacle with glee from afar after Doctor has met him.”
Magician pulls a long face and sighs, “hey, that’s not fair. Glee? I’m clearly, deeply troubled here right now.”
“Doctor is truly——” Magician drags out the syllable for his melodramatic speech, “impregnable.”
Lin Yi is uninterested in dramatic performances, and, judging this topic to be over, moves on, “who lives in 1-007?”
Magician’s face turns serious, “why?” And he immediately reaches an answer, “Doctor is interested in him?”
Lin Yi corrects his answer, “Doctor is very interested in him.”
“Or in them, I suppose.” Magician mumbles, before putting his flashy smile back on, “it is certainly rare to hear Doctor being interested in anything, but I’m afraid…”
He stops when noticing the person entering behind Lin Yi, “why are you here?”
Lin Yi tilts his head, and then moves aside for him, “Mentor?”
“I’m here to see my student.” The bespectacled man stops next to Lin Yi, and speaks with an almost melodic tone that silences the surroundings, “what were you discussing?”
Magician pushes down his non-existent cap, “Mentor, we need not your opinion on Stargaol affairs.”
“I see, do go on, then.” He is truly quite mild-mannered, not having been offended in the slightest by a remark straight to his face. He takes a courteous step away, which makes Lin Yi furrow his brow.
“That look of yours…” Magician muffles a snigger, “truly befits a good student of Mentor’s.”
He pauses, then adds, “even so, you still refused the suggestion because of Doctor…”
Magician turns to the amicable man, “Mentor, as you should know your student well, would you like to offer some insights?”
“He would not be happy to hear that from me.” Mentor helps lighten the mood with a soft tone, “Lin Yi is headstrong, so don’t tease him, now.”
“Sure, since it is Mentor asking…” Magician changes the topic back with a smile, “what were we talking about again?” He feigns recalling, “Doctor is interested in other people?”
“I do have to make sure I submit an application for what interests even the Doctor.” Magician is quite impassioned, “Doctor is a psychologist as well, is he not? He may be able to treat the frenzied quite effectively.”
Wasn’t he quite firmly against this suggestion in the beginning?
A somewhat confounded Lin Yi looks at Mentor in reflex.
Mentor ruffles his hair with a gentle smile, “I think what he means is that, Stargaol is not on hostile grounds with Doctor. So if possible, they are more inclined to work together.”
He even makes a light-hearted joke, “see? They even had me come just to understand Doctor better.”
“Believe me.” Magician’s tone is serious once again, “even considering only the strength and danger Doctor has demonstrated thus far, there is no possible justification to anger him.”
“For a new human who is quite likely to have the most complete evolution thus far, we only want to work together.” Magician sighs, “since we have walked on the path of studying evolution for so long, that we do not even know where we have strayed to end up in this predicament.”
“Magician hasn’t much in the way of words.” Mentor shakes his head, “Lin Yi, you need to make your own judgements rather than let yourself be led by the nose by him.”
Lin Yi’s senses has picked up an oddity——From what Magician just said. Yet he thought about the conversation thus far, and fails to pinpoint the source of that feeling of oddity.
Mentor is right. He needs to make his own judgements, rather than allowing himself to be taken for a ride on the garden path.
Lin Yi takes a deep breath, and eliminates all the unnecessary qualities from what Magician said, leaving behind the core message here – a display of goodwill towards Doctor.
Which, no matter the perspective, is a good thing to Stargaol if they can work together with Doctor.
“Then do inform me once again when you have these two things sorted.”
Lin Yi carefully takes a step back, before turning to leave.
After which, a few seconds of silence follows.
Mentor puts his hand on his nose, gripping slightly, before expressing a disappointment at the only other person left.
“You have not grown in the slightest these years.”
Author’s notes:
【Then he slowly lies down, until his body can feel the soft touches of the tufts——Right under his heart】
——Last night, something was going straight for his heart, only stopped by the bed boards.
I buried lots of little nuggets in the latter half of the chapter——I thought everyone would be enjoying the process of looking for and verifying your guesses, but that doesn’t seem to be the case.
Immediately spoiling my own plot points pains my heart as an author, though!
So, believe me, the plot to come will definitely, surely begin to unravel the mystery.
“Magician hasn’t much in the way of words.” Is not an inconsequential remark of Mentor, but an accurate description.
Carefully examine the context, and you will notice that Magician said something he should not have, needlessly exposing information.
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year to everyone!
A new year, a new me and you! Let’s leave the unpleasant to the past, and work towards what’s beautiful tomorrow.
May all your wishes come true!
(Super quietly) No extra chapters though.
(Super loudly) Because I ain’t got none left!
