Tokyo, October 1980.
There was no sign of autumn; the oppressive heat of the Indian summer continued to rage, and the sun at 9 a.m. was just as intense as at noon.
The nurse, beads of sweat on her forehead, quickly walked to the ward and, through the small window on the door, saw the emaciated young man inside packing his belongings.
She pushed open the door: "Mr. Naoki, you're already packing? Have you completed the discharge procedures?"
"Hi, the procedures are done, thanks to your care!" he replied in fluent Japanese, turning around. Pale-faced Naoki Eiyama, carrying a small bag, gave a slight bow to the nurse.
"There are just a few things left to take back, all packed up."
The entire process seemed like a program etched into his body, naturally completed.
"Take care of yourself, don't give up, Mr. Naoki!" the nurse reminded him.
"Hi, sorry for the trouble I've caused..."
...
Naoki Eiyama, stepping out of the hospital, stood for a moment, looking at the bright sunlight illuminating the streets. The streets were filled with Japanese signs, direction markers, and traditional Japanese architecture, creating a unique atmosphere...
He had been in the hospital for three days and still couldn't adapt to the fact that he was now living in Tokyo during the Showa era.
In his previous life, he was a 90s kid, an orphan, who managed to complete his undergraduate degree with the help of a kind-hearted person. After graduation, he became a programmer at a factory, starting a 007 work life, aiming to earn enough money to last a lifetime before being laid off at 35!
Then he planned to settle by the Erhai Lake in Dali and live a life of poetry and distant dreams.
Unfortunately, just as he was about to achieve his goal, he woke up one morning after a heart palpitation and found himself as Naoki Eiyama in the Showa era.
...
Walking along the street to the station, after a few stops, Naoki Eiyama returned to Nakano. Following the familiar route, he turned several corners and arrived at a narrow alley in an old neighborhood. At the end of the alley was an old two-story Western-style building where Naoki Eiyama lived.
The Makino family.
The two-story building had the landlord's residence and kitchen on the first floor. The landlord was a widowed old lady whose children were studying abroad. To ease her loneliness, she rented out the four rooms on the second floor. For an additional fee, tenants could use the kitchen on the first floor.
When Naoki Eiyama entered, the landlord was busy in the kitchen. She looked up:
"Oh, Mr. Eiyama, you're back!"
"Hi, Mrs. Makino, I'm back!" The conversation between the reserved Naoki Eiyama and Mrs. Makino in his memory always ended quickly, but this time, Mrs. Makino didn't seem to want to stop:
"Mr. Eiyama, are you feeling better?"
"Hi, the doctor said I'm fine, just need to eat lightly. Thank you for your concern."
"Mr. Eiyama, take care of yourself. Don't give up just because an idol got married. I'm sure Ms. Yamaguchi would not want her fans to give up on life!" Mrs. Makino's tone was unusually serious.
I didn't try to commit suicide because of an idol's marriage, Naoki Eiyama thought to himself.
"Hi, I'll definitely take better care of myself. Sorry for the trouble I've caused!" He replied earnestly, bowing slightly. Everything was still smooth, it seemed bowing had become a muscle memory.
After apologizing, he walked up to the second floor, took out his key, and opened the door. A sour smell of beer greeted him.
The room was small, with a tiny entrance. To the right of the door was a kitchenette with a simple sink and a kettle on the gas stove. To the left was a small bathroom.
After changing his shoes, he entered the main living area, which was a combined dining, living, and sleeping space. The bed was stored in a wall cabinet, making the room less crowded. In the corner was an old TV and a fan, with a few beer cans scattered around the coffee table and some remnants of vomit... Ah, the source of the smell...
Naoki Eiyama immediately opened the windows to ventilate the room. Sunlight streamed in, stirring up a faint dust. He tidied up a bit, packed the garbage, swept, and mopped the floor. His still-recovering body broke out in a cold sweat.
Thinking about it, he suddenly remembered he hadn't showered in three days and felt itchy all over. He grabbed some clean clothes and went into the bathroom.
...
After the shower, Naoki Eiyama looked at the young man in the mirror, no, the youth.
Under the fluffy hair was a pale, youthful face. His forehead was full and broad, his brow ridge prominent but not excessive. His arched eyebrows framed a pair of almond-shaped eyes, a straight nose, and a well-defined jawline... Hmm, quite handsome, except for the slightly weak eyes.
He was about 175 cm tall, with a slender, undernourished build. Wearing a loose shirt, he looked like a clothes hanger, clearly malnourished and lacking exercise...
However, feeling the vitality in his young body, Naoki Eiyama couldn't help but smile: the back pain, sciatica, nearsightedness, potbelly, and cervical spondylosis of his 30s... Thank you all for taking care of me, everyone. Goodbye~
Don't waste your days, for youth will not come again.
I guess I'm back to my youth! Hahaha~
After washing his clothes, he filled a kettle with water and turned on the gas stove to boil it.
Then he sat down, not knowing what to do.
Looking around, the walls were adorned with posters of Yamaguchi Momoe, her records were by the TV, and the coffee table had a report about her retirement. This was one of the reasons why his original self had drunk beer and taken sleeping pills on October 5th, when Yamaguchi Momoe announced her marriage and retirement at a concert in the Nippon Budokan.
His original self was a die-hard fan of Yamaguchi Momoe...
However, the current Naoki Eiyama didn't have much feeling for Yamaguchi Momoe. The memories of his original self were like a movie he had watched; familiar scenes would trigger associations, but a sense of detachment always separated his inner self from reality.
The Showa era, China should be in the 1980s, the early stages of reform and opening up, Journey to the West, Hong Kong, Leslie Cheung, Anita Mui, Teresa Teng...
What else? There's a generation gap, please forgive the 90s kid for not knowing much...
Can I go back?
His original self was a genuine Japanese person, seemingly with some connection to the yakuza. A high school graduate, a low-level worker, a poor guy, it would be hard to leave the country...
What does the Showa era in Japan have?
The upcoming bubble era? The Yamaguchi-gumi, the yakuza group rampant in Japan? And the "Shouwa beauty" faces that flood Bilibili? Seiko Matsuda, Akina Nakamori, Shizuka Kudoh...
No matter how you summarize it, this era seems full of "opportunities," as if a little effort could lead to great wealth!
Thinking about his previous life, working diligently in a 007 schedule, he might not even be able to afford a house in a big city, and after being laid off, he would have to go to Dali.
...
Living again, he decided, first to get rich, then to live a life of poetry and distant dreams!
