Title: Satou-san’s Phone call
“I’m sorry.”(S)
On the other end of the phone, Satou-san made a stifled, tense sound. I heard her breath touch the receiver and I naturally straightened up.
“There’s something I really wanted to ask you, Yamaguchi-kun, and I felt I really had to call you. I’m sorry it’s so late at night.”(S)
“No, I’m good.”(Y)
I smiled a little, good thing she couldn’t see me, and continued.
“It’s not too late. I’m always up until about midnight.”(Y)
“Yeah….. Thank you.”(S)
Satou-san seemed to laugh a little too.
Then she fell silent. It was quiet on the other end of the phone. It was as if there was nothing but a hint of Satou-san’s presence. Every now and then, a faint sound of what seemed to be a sigh sounded, and I could tell that she was hesitating about something. It’s like she’s being rushed, and to be honest, it was painful for me too. But I just waited and waited. I didn’t want to do anything to rush her.
How long have I been waiting?
“…um…”(S)
Sato sucked in a breath and finally started to speak.
“You know what, Yamaguchi-kun?”(S)
“Yes.”(Y)
“I need to ask you something.”(S)
“I’m listening.”(Y)
“I mean I… told him how I felt about him.”(S)
Satou-san said.
“I see.”(Y)
I phrased it so that she didn’t realize that I gulped.
“So….”(S)
“So?”(Y)
“He said he liked me, too.”(S)
“Yeah, what?”(Y)
The chair at the study desk creaked. I felt a chill in my neck and I looked up at the ceiling. I couldn’t get the words of congratulations out. It’s the right thing to say in this room.
“I was able to get that him to tell me that he loves me…”(S)
I can hear her voice as she bites down. It was so far away on the other end of the phone. Calmly. I finally open my mouth, repeating the phrase.
“Congratulations.”(Y)
When I told her that, Sato-san smiled a little.
“Thanks……… But, you know.”(S)
“What?”(Y)
“I don’t know what’s going to happen yet,”(S)
A few thin words followed, which made me wonder.
I heard. I heard that he… I asked him if he liked me, even though he didn’t know what I looked like and had never met me before. And then…”(S)
Her breath came in a painful succession.
“Then he told me that he liked me even if he had never met me, but he was confident that he would like me no matter what I looked like… so he said he was going to come and see me, and that he would see me properly.”(S)
“Okay.”(Y)
“He happens to have business over here.”(S)
She spoke slowly, as if she were thinking about it.
“He said something. He said that he didn’t care about my face, that he’d love me no matter what I was like, that he didn’t have time to see me the any other day, but this time I’ll be there for him, and he wants me to wait for him.”(S)
Satou-san said that much and sighed again.
“But I’m afraid. I was afraid that if I met him, he would hate me…”(S)
I remained quiet. I couldn’t say anything.
I had a bad feeling about this. I wasn’t ready to take the sweet words that Satou-san had given me for granted. He just happened to have something to do here – the timing seemed too good to be true. The distance between Hokkaido and this town is to far enough for him to come to see you. Of course, it would be strange to be suspicious of him just because of that, but it’s as if he saw it coming. I’m calmly assessing the situation. But honestly, I’m not so sure. Maybe it’s just jealousy that makes me paranoid. Maybe I just want to believe that she is being tricked.
Satou-san’s voice also had a hint of anxiety
“I’m okay with it. I’m confident that no matter what he looks like I won’t change my mind. But the other hand……..”(S)
“Are you nervous?”(Y)
When I ask her clearly, she replies with an exhale.
“Yeah……..because I’m going to have him come to me, and I don’t want to disappoint him after all the trouble he had to go through.”(S)
“And when is that person coming?”(Y)
“t’s this Saturday. He has to come over to run some errands, but he doesn’t have any more days to see me, so I don’t have time to hesitate.”(S)
“Saturday.”(Y)
“Yeah. It’s not that I don’t want to see him, but I’m ready for it, but I’m still afraid.(S)
After letting this slip out, Satou-san added apologetically,
“That’s why I wanted to talk to Yamaguchi-kun. I thought that Yamaguchi-kun was capable of thinking about things more calmly than I did. I wanted to talk to you about it, but I’m sorry. I’m just trying to get my head around this, I don’t want to bother you about this.”(S)
As she said, this confidentiality was not a consultation.
I guess you already have the answer. She’s not the kind of girl who doesn’t go to see someone she likes when she’s asked to meet them. Satou-san should have been innocent and girlishly single-minded, wanting to see that person at first sight. I still don’t know if Satou-san’s fears are unfounded or not. I’m not as calm as you say. I’m still having feelings that I’m desperately suppressing. I’m tempted to tell her how I feel about her in the most awkward way possible, when I already know how I feel about her. My hands were shaking in my hands as I held the phone, and I felt bad. I hope my fears are unfounded. I don’t think so at all, but I can’t think for a minute that Satou-san’s love life will work out, but if it will make her happy, it’s better that her fears are relieved. She had to think that now.
Just a shaky feeling made me open my mouth.
“Satou-san. What time and where do you plan to meet on Saturday?”(Y)
“What? I’m supposed to be at the airport, after five o’clock…….why?”(S)
She answers with a child like innocence and asks me back.
I felt a sense of danger in her honest nature, which is a fine line between carelessness and honesty. What if I was going to go and interrupt her? In fact, I’m not sure I wouldn’t.
“I’ll leave the day open. Call me if you need anything.”(Y)
I tell her, pretending to be an honest person.
“Nothing happening would be for the best. Of course if anything happens, I’ll head over when you call me.”(Y)
“Yamaguchi-kun…”(S)
I heard a few sipping sounds on the other end of the phone. Afterwards, Satuo-san said.
“Thank you. I’m sorry for making you worried, too, Yamaguchi-kun”(S)
I laughed, and Satou-san seemed to take it as a good sign.
“Thank you so much.”(S)
She has repeated her words of gratitude to me over and over again.
There were really not a lot days until Saturday. I didn’t even get time to cool off. I had to make a decision. Knowing Satuo-san’s single-mindedness, I don’t know what I should do about my own feelings.
