During the Lesson with the Person Next to Me

“Then, for the next paragraph, please translate, Satou-san.”

Our English teacher pointed to my desk-neighbor Satou.

“Yes.”

Satou-san replied.

But when she stood up, she knocked down her chair and made a loud noise in the classroom.

Satou-san quickly picked the chair back up and lifted her textbook with a bright red face.

She properly opens her English textbook to page thirty-two. Yet, the voice that reads the translation can’t be heard.

While spinning my pen, I glanced at her.

Satou-san only opened her mouth and couldn’t speak, furrowing her eyebrows.

“Satou-san? From the fifth line, please.”

Teachers are merciless at times like these, sharpening their voice and pressuring her.

“Y-yes.”

Satou-san replied with a weak voice.

While waiting, the classroom begins to get noisier. Classmates focus on Satou-san, some with doubtful looks, some laughing, a few looking irritated.

And Satou-san was still standing, but her face wasn’t as red as when she had knocked over the chair.

Satou-san is bad at studying. Not just in English, but in every subject, or so she told me with an embarrassed face.

I won’t do anything about that secret. But I’m reconsidering that decision now as the person sitting next to her.

If she’s called on in class, Satou-san always pauses like this. No matter what subject, if she’s called on Satou-san can’t answer. It’s annoying since she just holds up the class.

I don’t want to seem like I’m too serious, but I’m taking the university entrance exam next year. I can’t have any of my classmates holding me back in my studies.

That’s why I take out a piece of loose-leaf paper.

In the corner, I write a translation starting from the fifth line of page thirty-two of the textbook. While the teacher is turned around to the blackboard, I quietly put it on Satou-san’s desk.

She looked at me, surprised.

Whatever, just answer it and sit down.

“‘If only slightly, Courtney felt close to the young man. The only way to describe Kestner’s mansion is gaudy. As he is known for desiring all things that shine, his taste in the interior and furniture could not be described as good. Even still, Courtney cleaned the room, sometimes sighing.'”

Satou-san read it aloud without any hesitation.

The English teacher who seemed like they had already given up was suddenly surprised when the girl started answering suddenly. They smiled with wide eyes, satisfied.

“Good job, you can sit down now. Then, the next paragraph…”

When the next classmate was picked, Satou-san sat down, quieter than when she stood up.

I’m also relieved, so I return to my textbook.

But then,

“Yamaguchi-kun, Yamaguchi-kun.”

I heard my name from the seat next to me.

While I was thinking “what is it this time” as I looked over, Satou-san was smiling at me.

“Thank you.”

She said so with her hands together.

I mean, it’s not like I did it to be thanked. There’s nothing to be thankful for, either. It was just an act of pity, really.

“Don’t worry about it.”

I answer casually while looking away.

But, this time Satou-san was persistent.

“Yeah, that really saved me…” (S)

“No, like I said-” (Y)

“This time, I’ll properly thank you, okay?” (S)

“Do what you like.” (Y)

Really persistent.

If she keeps worrying about it, this’ll bother me, too.

It’s not like I did it out of the kindness of my heart, it’s just annoying when class is interrupted, so I helped her. Having a classmate who can’t do anything sit next to me isn’t that much of a problem. If

you want to thank me, then you should review and prepare for the next lesson.

If there was someone who could cover for me if I couldn’t answer in class, I would be thankful-

“Then, Yamaguchi-kun, you read the next paragraph.”

“Eh?”

Out of nowhere, the English teacher called my name.

I got up in a hurry, but – Where is the “next paragraph”?

I lifted the textbook and looked into it. But as to how far the class has read, I have no idea.

It’s because I was paying attention to the persistent Satou-san that I couldn’t hear them reading.

The classroom starts getting noisy again, and everyone starts looking at me.

It was the first time I was called on in class, and I realized how Satou-san always felt when she couldn’t answer the question. It’s definitely a bad feeling, and you feel your face go red.

But it’s all Satou-san’s fault anyway.

“What’s wrong, Yamaguchi-kun? Were you not listening?”

The teacher’s harsh glare was fixed on me.

I couldn’t answer, and so glanced to the seat to my left.

Satou-san puts her hands together, and looks at me.

“……I’m sorry. I wasn’t listening either.”

With Satou-san in the next seat, there’s really not much of a problem.

Domo domo~

I translate sometimes, I guess. I read a lot, but don't really make much of an impression or comment on anything, so probably nobody realizes.
