Title: Satou-san who doesn’t wear makeup
The crafts shop we were looking for was located in an old arcade street. Satou-san and I went in there and started to look for fabric to use for the lady’s costume.
“My mom’s dress isn’t quite long enough. I’m just thinking of adding a skirt.”(S)
Satou-san repeated as a reminder.
“I hope we have a good time here…”(s)
I’ve never been to a craft store before. The sewing kit I bought in elementary school was enough for me to attach buttons. The first time I entered the shop, it was smaller than I thought it would be, and there were as many shelves as they could put in the small space, and there were as many colourful yarns and colourful fabrics folded on the shelves as they could put on the shelves. The store also seems to carry a full line of hardware and tools, including rhinestones and eyelets. It’s hard for a beginner to find something in this chaotic assortment, and you’ll get tired if you walk around in a haphazard manner.
“So, what are you going to buy?”(Y)
I asked her.
“I want something that goes with the dress and doesn’t float. It’s similar in texture and not too flashy.”(S)
“The texture….what kind of dress?”(Y)
“Well, it’s black and knee high.”(S)
Black. That’s not what I imagined from the word ‘dress’. I thought it would be a clearer colour. I was confused and she continued.
“The material is very solid. It’s not glossy and plain.”(S)
“Yeah.”(Y)
From what I’ve heard, it looks more like a mourning outfit than a dress. I don’t know what her mother is like, but I wonder if she likes to wear sober fashion.
“If it’s a black dress, it might be too heavy if you wear all black.”(S)
I advised her to do so, even though she was having a hard time forming an image. Satou-san nodded in agreement.
“If I wear all black, people would mistake me for an old witch’s grandmother, right? Well, I am playing a…noblewoman.”
Satou-san was understandably embarrassed when she said the last word. Apparently she is embarrassed to call herself a noblewoman. I thought that was cute, but I tried to cover it up as I went on.
“Do you know what colour you’re going to wear with it?”(Y)
“I haven’t decided what to do. I’d like to hear what you think, Yamaguchi-kun.”(S)
As he said this, Satou-san seemed to have found something. Suddenly, she walked over to one of the shelves and pointed to a folded cloth.
“Oh, how about this?”(S)
She found a bright gray cloth. Gray may range in colour, but Satou-san chose a subdued gray, just like her. If I were to use an analogy, it would be an austere gray that looks like the kind of colour that would be used by people of my grandfather’s generation to tailor suits.
“It’s not too plain.”(Y)
I told her frankly, and as soon as I did, Satou-san nodded.
“I guess……..wouldn’t sober colours be better? It doesn’t stand out on stage either.”(S)
“You don’t want to show off?”(Y)
“It’s just that…”(S)
Satou-san smiles bitterly. I think so, too. Someone who wants to stand out in a play would be the first to take on such a role. Both Satou-san and I won those roles in a lottery, so we don’t want to stand out. In other words, we don’t want to stand out from the crowd. I definitely don’t want to stand out. It’s a mouse and a horse, and I’m wearing tights. It was depressing to think that I would have to go out and buy them. To change the subject, I looked around the store to find a fabric that would go with Satou-san’s dress.
“Yes, how about that pink?”(Y)
I said as I found the sleek satin fabric that was sold rolled up and rolled up. It’s not a bright shade of pink, but a pale, slightly childish pink. I thought the gentle colour, like the colour of sherbet, would suit Satou-san well. In my opinion, she suits pink.
“Do you like pink, Yamaguchi-kun?”(S)
Satou-san said, blinking and blinking.
“The ribbon you gave me for my birthday was pink, too, wasn’t it?”(S)
I look away to hide my embarrassment.
“I chose the colour because it suits you, Satou-san.”(Y)
“Thanks, because I love it too, so I’m glad.”(S)
I was momentarily thrown off by the words ‘because I love it’. Of course, she was talking about the colour. It’s not about me. I don’t want to think it’s something completely different.
“Oh, right.”(S)
While I was awkwardly looking away, Satou-san continued,
“But a black dress and a pink skirt don’t quite go together.”(S)
“Well, yeah.”(Y)
I only tried to pick out a colour that would look good on Satou-san, but I didn’t look for a colour that would go with the black dress. Rather, I think it would be difficult to find a colour and a fabric that would match the original dress without even seeing what kind of dress it was. It’s too late now. She’s not very clever either. You should have brought that dress to me. I would have liked to see it.
“Well, how about we keep the fabric for the skirt black and add a splash of colour?”(Y)
She looks dubious at my suggestion.
“A splash of colour?”(S)
“Yeah. Like, say, a dress with a layer on top of it. Then you wouldn’t look like a wizard, would you?”(Y)
Especially if it’s a dress, a sense of unity is probably important, so it’s probably best not to change the color of the skirt in a bad way. However, if you add some color to it with a cloak, it may counteract the wizard-like look.
“Maybe a shawl as a cloak.”(Y)
She put her hand to her chin and Satou-san pondered. After a bit, she smiled at me.
“That’s a good idea. Yamaguchi-kun, that’s great.”(S)
“I’m glad I could help.”(Y)
“To tell you the truth, there was one other thing I was having trouble with. My mom’s dress was designed to show off her shoulders, so I felt a little embarrassed.”(S)
She said with a hint of a sigh and patted herself on the shoulder with the cardigan on. A dress designed to show off the shoulders, that information was new to me. I snapped out of it.
“Is that one like a camisole?”(Y)
“Yeah. I was embarrassed just to stand on stage and I was having trouble showing my shoulders and back. But if I put a shawl on, I don’t have to show it, and I can just add the skirt length, so it’s a relief.”(S)
She patted her large chest down. She then added happily.
“Thank you. Yamaguchi-kun’s advice helped me a lot.”(S)
Looking back, I never saw her show her shoulders, even in the summer. It was because whenever we went out together, she was always dressed plainly. I kept thinking that while I liked her, I thought she was cute, she wasn’t sexy. I wanted to see it. If that’s the kind of dress you designed, you could have told me ahead of time and I wouldn’t have given you any extra advice. I was wavering for a while, happy to be of service and feeling like I had done something that was a shame.
