Su Jing asked Su Liang and Su Xiaolin to go to the dock first, while he went to take care of some business before rushing over.
Driving the fishing boat that Su Jing had bought for 200,000 yuan, they arrived at the fishing grounds. Su Hua, Su Hu, and others were all on the fish platform. Their faces clearly showed they were quite frightened. Three of the net cages were visibly deformed, in a mess, but the sturdy wooden fish platform remained intact.
When Su Hua, Su Hu, and the others saw Su Jing, they immediately started talking all at once.
"Jing, you didn't see it, but that shark was really fierce."
"It destroyed three net cages and ate the meatballs in the bamboo basket. It seemed to be attracted by the meatballs. Fortunately, we quickly took the meatballs from the other six net cages and threw them to it, or the other net cages would have been in danger too."
"That thing lingered around for a long time before leaving. I feel like if we put the meatballs down again, it will come back."
Looking at their faces, it was clear they were quite scared, but at the same time, there was a hint of excitement and thrill. Although facing off against a shark was terrifying, it would be a great story to tell in the future. Moreover, after thinking about it, they realized that standing on this sturdy fish platform was much safer than being on a small boat. They couldn't help but admire Su Jing's foresight.
Their only concern now was that if the shark came back and destroyed more net cages, they wouldn't be able to catch any fish, and they would have to keep replacing the net cages and losing money. How could they continue this business?
"What kind of shark was it?" Su Jing jumped from the boat onto the fish platform and asked.
"We don't know its name. It had a big head, like a hammer," Su Hu said.
"That's a hammerhead shark, also known as a mako shark. It's an expert at finding its way back, so there's a high chance it will return," Su Jing explained. Hammerhead sharks are very strange-looking, named for their distinctive head shape, which protrudes to the sides like the hat in "The Story of a Noble Lady." Each protrusion has an eye and a nostril, and by swaying its head back and forth, it can see 360 degrees around it.
"Why don't we set off a bomb to kill it?"
"My third uncle used to use explosives to fish. He still has some gunpowder. Should I go get it?"
"You guys are crazy. Bombs are not allowed in these waters, and do you want to blow up the fish platform too?" Su Jing was speechless. He had been a bit worried that they might be too scared to continue fishing, but now it seemed his concerns were unfounded.
"What should we do then?" everyone asked, puzzled.
"I have a plan. First, let's catch the fish in the undamaged net cages," Su Jing said with a mysterious smile.
The others didn't know what Su Jing was up to, but they followed his instructions. In fact, they had already started reeling in the nets after the hammerhead shark left.
The fishing grounds were fished twice a day: meatballs were put out at midnight, and the nets were reeled in the next morning. Then more meatballs were put out, and the nets were reeled in again in the afternoon.
Although it seemed like they were working 24 hours a day, the most labor-intensive part was reeling in the nets, which only took a few hours. The rest of the time, just one or two people needed to keep an eye on things.
This morning, they had already reeled in the nets once. The meatballs had only been in the water for a short time, and they hadn't caught many fish, but they couldn't let them go to waste.
After the fish were caught, they were put into the boat's refrigerated compartment, which could hold several thousand pounds of fish.
"Jing, what's next?" everyone asked eagerly, wanting to know how to deal with the shark.
"Do we have any meatballs left?" Su Jing asked.
"We have some," Su Liang said, taking out a small bag of meatballs that he had sealed in a plastic bag as Su Jing had instructed. Su Jing took the bag, put the meatballs in a bamboo basket, and then lowered the basket into the water. The others watched in confusion, then picked up their tools, ready for action. Su Jing didn't comment, pretending not to notice.
After the bamboo basket was lowered, fish began to gather around it. Su Jing ignored them and waited patiently.
About five minutes later, two dorsal fins and a dark shadow appeared on the water's surface not far away.
"That thing is here," everyone tensed up.
"Jing, come back," Su Liang tried to pull Su Jing back from the edge.
"It's fine. It's only about three meters long," Su Jing waved his hand and whistled.
Everyone was puzzled. Why are you whistling? Can you walk a shark like a dog?
Suddenly, a dark shadow shot up from below. Because of its speed, no one could see what it was before it collided with the hammerhead shark. Upon closer inspection, it was a killer whale that had bitten the hammerhead shark's head.
"What the heck is going on?" Su Liang, Su Xiaolin, and the others were stunned. How did a killer whale suddenly appear? Did it seem like Su Jing called it out? Was it an illusion?
However, at that moment, a fierce battle was unfolding, and they had no time to think.
Under everyone's watchful eyes, the hammerhead shark shook its head vigorously and escaped from the killer whale's mouth, but it had a shocking wound on its head. The hammerhead shark, not willing to give up, turned around and bit the killer whale.
The killer whale remained calm, suddenly flicking its tail upward. Using the upward force generated by its tail, it created a vortex that lifted the hammerhead shark's head out of the water. The hammerhead shark's head floated uncontrollably, and at that moment, the killer whale quickly turned its body and extended its tail out of the water, striking the hammerhead shark's head like a karate chop.
"Bang"
A loud noise echoed, and a huge wave splashed up.
The hammerhead shark's head was hit so hard that it immediately passed out.
The killer whale quickly swam to the side of the hammerhead shark, bit it on the side, and flipped it over, causing the shark to enter a state of paralysis, known as "tonic immobility," rendering it completely defenseless.
"Wow, that killer whale knows karate."
"I thought there would be a big battle, but it was over in two moves."
Everyone was amazed and praised, forgetting to wonder whether the killer whale was a friend or foe. Such a thrilling battle scene was something they might never see again in their lives.
"Xiao Hu, don't eat it, bring it over," Su Jing suddenly said.
When these words were spoken, everyone turned to look at Su Jing, wondering if he was talking to the killer whale. Did he really call it out? Would the killer whale listen to him?
When they turned to look, they saw the killer whale actually biting the hammerhead shark and dragging it over.
"Good boy," Su Jing reached out and patted the killer whale's head.
The killer whale let out a joyful call, raised its head high, and stuck out its tongue, looking cute and playful. An interesting thing about killer whales is that they look fierce when they show their teeth while hunting, but when they stick out their tongues, they look harmless and especially adorable.
"Wow, Jing, is this killer whale yours?" Everyone was stunned. When did Su Jing get such a killer whale? Are killer whales so easy to raise? It looks so obedient.
