Summer and Chen Yixin returned home together. They casually cooked some instant noodles, ate, and then went to bed. After a tiring day yesterday and staying up all night, they were both exhausted and fell into a deep sleep as soon as their heads hit the pillows. Chen Yixin had grown up playing with Summer since childhood, and Summer's home was like his own, so he felt no need to be formal.
Just as they were sleeping soundly, they were suddenly awakened by a loud noise from outside the door.
"Brother Tian, do you think it's the loan sharks coming to collect the debt?" Chen Yixin asked hurriedly.
Because Summer's father, Xia Shuliang, owed a lot of money, loan sharks often came to collect debts, causing a commotion and disturbing the neighbors. If it weren't for Summer's kind and righteous nature, and the fact that his sister Xia Xue was young and cute, the neighbors would have complained long ago.
"Maybe. Let's go check it out," Summer said as he put on his clothes and walked out with Chen Yixin.
As soon as they opened the door, they saw a pile of furniture blocking their door, and several burly men were moving things into the neighboring room.
"Huh, someone is moving in next door?" Chen Yixin asked curiously. "I wonder who it could be."
"I don't know, but if they can live next door, it shows that the Shaw family values them quite a bit," Summer analyzed.
The Shaw Brothers Studio had four dormitory buildings. Three of them were for ordinary workers, with rooms of only 30 to 40 square meters. The building where Summer lived, the Benevolence Building, was specifically for stars and celebrities, with each apartment being 70 to 80 square meters. In Hong Kong, where land was so expensive, such large apartments were very rare.
If it weren't for the significant contributions Summer's father, Xia Shuliang, had made to the Shaw family, which the Shaw family still remembered, Summer would have lost his place long ago.
Chen Yixin nodded in agreement. His father worked as a prop master at the Shaw Brothers Studio and could only live in the ordinary dormitory. Even though he had served the Shaw family for twenty years, he still didn't qualify to move here.
"Alright, no need to guess. We'll see them eventually. Let's go back to sleep; I'm so tired," Summer yawned, still feeling exhausted from staying up all night.
"How can we sleep with all this noise?" Chen Yixin frowned and said to the moving workers, "Sir, please be a bit quieter. We need to sleep."
"Sure, sure, we'll try to be quieter," the foreman replied, "But please understand, moving is noisy by nature."
Chen Yixin nodded and went back to bed with Summer to try to sleep.
But just as they were about to fall asleep, they heard a loud, grating sound of something being dragged across the floor, followed by the clattering of objects hitting the walls.
"Damn, I told them to be quiet, and they're still making so much noise. They clearly don't want us to sleep," Chen Yixin sat up and said, "I can't let this go!" He put on his shoes, grabbed a baseball bat, and went out.
Summer, fearing he would cause trouble, quickly followed.
"Stop, stop! I already told you someone is sleeping and to be quiet. Why are you still making so much noise?" Chen Yixin shouted, waving his bat.
In the Shaw Brothers Studio, Chen Yixin was known as the "Little Tyrant." He only listened to Summer, and no one else. Now that these moving workers dared to provoke him, he was determined to show them who was boss.
"Little brother, we have no choice. The owner wants us to move quickly. What can we do?" the foreman wiped the sweat from his forehead and said with a pained expression.
Seeing this, Summer felt a bit sorry for them. He knew that moving workers earned their living through hard labor, carrying heavy furniture up and down stairs, which was a very tiring job.
"Alright, Yixin, let's not argue. They are also working hard," Summer said, waving his hand. "How about this: we'll help them move. The sooner they finish, the sooner we can sleep peacefully."
Chen Yixin was taken aback and was about to say something when he saw Summer already rolling up his sleeves and helping the moving workers.
"Brother Tian, what are you doing?" he asked in confusion.
"Since we can't sleep anyway, we might as well help out. Besides, if they can live here, they will be our neighbors. It's only right to help them," Summer said with a smile.
Chen Yixin nodded, "You're right, Brother Tian. Let's help them."
"Thank you, thank you!" the foreman said gratefully as Summer and Chen Yixin helped lift the wardrobe.
"You're welcome," Summer smiled and carried the wardrobe into the room with Chen Yixin.
"Move the sofa a bit to the west, no, not that side, this side. Sigh, they don't understand Mandarin, it's really frustrating," a woman's voice said as they entered the room, catching Summer's attention.
Since coming to Hong Kong, this was the first time he had heard someone speak Mandarin, which felt quite familiar.
"Move the wardrobe over here. Xiao Xian, it's too messy in here. Why don't you take Miss Qiu downstairs to the ice room for a drink, and come back when Mom has cleaned up the room," the woman's voice continued.
"Mom, it's stuffy and hot in here. Why don't you and Miss Qiu go downstairs to rest? I can watch over things here," a girl's voice replied.
"Naive child, with so many men around, how can you stay here? Listen to Mom and take Miss Qiu downstairs," the woman said.
As the mother and daughter were talking, Summer and Chen Yixin had already carried the wardrobe into the room. "Madam, where should we put the wardrobe?" Summer asked with a smile, but then he paused, seeing three women in the room. One of them looked exactly like the Hong Kong star Wang Zaxian, beautiful, lovely, and charming.
Seeing her, Summer was immediately reminded of a poem: "The reeds are lush, the white dew turns to frost. The one I yearn for stands by the water." "She is truly beautiful. Watching her in movies already made her seem like a beauty without equal, but in person, she is even more stunning," he thought in amazement.
In his previous life, he had seen many beautiful women, both natural and artificial, pure and sexy, cold and passionate, but Wang Zaxian's beauty, which was "as pure as a lotus, naturally unadorned," still left him in awe.
"Hey, who are you two?" a lady asked, annoyed by Summer's intense gaze on her daughter.
"Ah... Auntie, hello. We are your neighbors. I'm Summer, and this is Chen Yixin. We saw you moving in and came to help," Summer explained, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Based on my memory from my previous life, this must be Miss Wang Zaxian. She is truly charming and captivating, even someone like me, who has seen it all, is mesmerized by her," he thought in amazement.
He remembered that after Wang Zaxian debuted in Taiwan with the film "The Lake Side Will Be Cold This Year," she was invited by Ms. Fang Yihua to develop her career in Hong Kong. If his memory served him right, the girl who looked like Wang Zaxian was almost certainly her.
Hearing that they were neighbors and not hooligans, the lady's expression improved. She knew that the people who lived in the Benevolence Building were all important figures.
Although Summer was young, she didn't dare to underestimate him. Who knew what kind of influential people his parents or siblings might be? As newcomers, they couldn't afford to offend anyone.
"Neighbors, nice to meet you. Ah, put the wardrobe down, it's heavy," the lady smiled. "Xiao Xian, get two bottles of water for these gentlemen."
"Sure," Wang Zaxian replied crisply, turning to fetch two bottles of mineral water.
"Thank you," Summer and Chen Yixin said as they put down the wardrobe and took the water.
"Your accent doesn't sound like you're from Hong Kong," Summer said with a smile, although he already knew they were from Taiwan, he pretended to be unaware.
"Yes, my daughter and I are from Taiwan. This is my daughter, Wang Zaxian. She will be working at the Shaw Brothers Studio. Please take care of her," Wang's mother nodded.
"Don't worry, Auntie. Yixin and I also work at the Shaw Brothers Studio. As colleagues and neighbors, we will certainly look out for each other," Summer smiled.
"Thank you in advance," Wang's mother said, impressed by Summer's polite demeanor. "I'm surprised to hear such good Mandarin. It's quite impressive," she added with a smile.
Although they had only been in Hong Kong for a few days, they had already experienced the difficulties of the language barrier. Wang's mother only spoke Mandarin and not Cantonese, making communication very challenging. Hearing Summer's fluent Mandarin made her feel like she had met an old friend in a foreign land.
"I learned Mandarin from my father. He is a Mandarin film director and came from the mainland," Summer explained with a smile.
"Is that so? Then you must take even better care of our Xiao Xian," Wang's mother said, becoming even more enthusiastic upon hearing that Summer's father was a director.
"Of course, of course," Summer said, feeling a bit embarrassed. Given his father's current status, he could hardly take care of himself, let alone Wang Zaxian.
"Alright, let's get back to moving. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can rest," he quickly changed the subject.
"This young man is really nice," Wang's mother said, smiling and nodding, impressed by Summer's politeness and diligence.
Wang Zaxian also had a good impression of this kind-hearted neighbor and nodded in agreement.
"Don't let him fool you..." Miss Qiu said softly.
Her words made Wang's mother and Wang Zaxian's faces change.
During the new book period, all kinds of support are needed. Old Bai thanks you!
