Jin Muchen's car wasn't driving fast, but it wasn't slow either. He quickly passed through these few blocks. Although these blocks were dangerous, as long as you didn't walk around on the streets causing trouble, it wouldn't be too dangerous. After all, car chases and gun battles like in Hollywood movies don't happen often in the real world.
He soon arrived at Church Street. After driving about 300 meters, he stopped in front of No. 30. However, just as he parked, he heard loud arguments coming from inside No. 30.
"Stupid ***, if you leave, don't come back."
Even before the engine had turned off, he could hear the angry curses coming from the house.
Such family disputes were common in this poor black community, and Jin Muchen was already used to them.
Soon, a fat black woman, resembling a mountain of meat, angrily dragged a suitcase out of the house, followed by a Labrador with a similar build to its owner, slowly trailing behind her.
The woman got into an SUV parked by the roadside, and the car sped away.
Jin Muchen watched the SUV drive off, then took the takeout from the thermal bags in his car and walked to the door of No. 30, knocking on it.
"Damn ***, didn't you say you would never come back?"
The door suddenly opened, and an angry black face appeared in front of Jin Muchen.
"Hey! Buddy, take it easy, I'm just a delivery guy."
Jin Muchen put on an innocent smile. Although the black man was very angry, he hadn't lost his mind. It was clear that he still had some manners, as he even said sorry to Jin Muchen.
This black man was in his thirties and was different from the rude black men Jin Muchen usually encountered when delivering takeout.
Most American blacks speak with a very strong accent, and their tone is often deliberately raised, making them sound a bit cocky. Some speak very unclearly, as if they have a lot of personality. This black man was very different.
His pronunciation was very clear, and his overall demeanor was very refined.
The man in front of him was of medium build, unlike most blacks who are either very fat or very thin like drug addicts. He didn't look his age, and he didn't have the strong body odor that most blacks have.
However, one thing he had in common with most blacks was that he had no money.
"Very sorry, buddy. I have no money. That *** took all the money I had, so I can't pay for your meal."
When Jin Muchen mentioned the price of the takeout and saw the takeout in his hand, he managed to force a bitter smile.
Jin Muchen was taken aback. He had been delivering takeout in this area for some time, and although the blacks here were poor, they usually could still afford a few dozen dollars for takeout. This was the first time he had encountered such a situation.
It looked like this trip was a waste, but it didn't matter. Jin Muchen shrugged.
"Alright, buddy, I understand."
He turned to leave, but just as he took a step, the black man called him back.
"Hey, buddy, how about this? If you take these things back, they'll just be thrown away. I'm really hungry. How about this: look around, see if there's anything valuable here that you like, and you can take it. Then leave the food. What do you think?"
This suggestion made Jin Muchen pause. To be honest, he had encountered such situations before.
However, those were usually petty thieves who had just stolen something and hadn't had time to sell it yet. They would order Chinese food to celebrate.
To be honest, Chinese food was one of the few affordable, delicious, and exotic foods that these blacks could afford.
Jin Muchen had indeed traded takeout for many good things from these thieves, such as brand new LCD TVs, Xboxes, or PS game consoles and game discs.
These items could often fetch a good price at a pawn shop. For a few dollars of takeout, he could get items worth dozens or even hundreds of dollars, which was a good deal for Jin Muchen, who needed money.
Since the other party had made such a suggestion, Jin Muchen didn't object.
He followed the black man into his house. The house wasn't very large, a two-bedroom apartment, and the environment was quite clear. Compared to many black homes he had been to, this one was much cleaner and tidier.
"Not bad, huh! Haha, unfortunately, I lost my job, and my woman left. I don't know how long this environment will last."
The black man, seeing Jin Muchen looking around, couldn't help but say with a hint of self-mockery.
"Buddy, don't be too upset. I understand."
Jin Muchen gave the black man a look that said, "I understand," which made the black man feel a bit better. It seemed they were in the same boat.
The black man's personality was usually quite humorous. In an instant, the black man looked at Jin Muchen with a hint of sympathy, which made Jin Muchen feel a bit uncomfortable.
However, he quickly dismissed those feelings and began to show off his rap talent, introducing the valuable items in his house to Jin Muchen.
"Buddy, what do you think of this sofa? I bought it from IKEA a while ago, and it cost me $299..."
Jin Muchen looked at the fabric sofa, which was still relatively clean, but it was hard to tell if it was second-hand. It definitely wasn't from IKEA.
Seeing that Jin Muchen wasn't interested in the sofa, the black man quickly started to introduce other items he thought could be worth a meal.
"What, you don't like this lamp either? ... Oh, no, the TV is out of the question. It's my only entertainment, buddy. Is there really nothing you like?"
The black man introduced many items, but none of them interested Jin Muchen. They were all old and worn out, and wouldn't fetch a good price at a second-hand store.
It seemed this black man wasn't like the thieves he had encountered before, so this deal was likely to fall through.
Jin Muchen didn't want to waste more time and was about to leave when he suddenly saw a bowl in a corner of the living room.
To be precise, it was a dog food bowl. As his gaze swept over the bowl, he saw a flash of yellow light on the bowl's surface.
He almost thought he was seeing things. He rubbed his eyes and looked again.
The bowl was covered in a black, sticky substance, probably a mix of dog saliva and dog food. The living room was dimly lit, and Jin Muchen focused his attention. The world in front of him suddenly became brighter. This change had started two weeks ago, and he needed to get the bowl to determine the reason.
He focused on the bowl again and saw clearly that under the black, sticky substance, there were some yellow patterns.
The black man saw Jin Muchen staring at the dog food bowl and immediately knew he was interested. He quickly picked up the bowl.
"Hey, buddy, you're really lucky. This is a one-of-a-kind dog food bowl in all of New York. It's not a cheap plastic or stainless steel bowl from a pet store. It's a porcelain bowl, buddy. That's why I say it's unique..."
The black man's rap talent and self-praise made it seem like he was born to be an auctioneer.
Jin Muchen carefully examined the bowl. Despite the sticky, disgusting substance on it, he could see the yellow and pink five-clawed dragon pattern underneath.
Seeing this pattern, Jin Muchen's heart skipped a beat. His grandfather used to deal in antiques, and although he hadn't learned much about antiques from him, he knew the basics.
This bowl looked like an antique, and more importantly, when the black man brought the bowl to him, he could see a faint yellow light coming from it.
Although the light was very faint, Jin Muchen was sure it wasn't his imagination. The bowl was indeed emitting a yellow glow. What did this mean?
Since his body had changed, he first noticed his increased strength, then his improved vision and hearing. However, this was the first time he had seen a different color of light from an object.
So he felt it was very necessary to get this bowl and verify his hypothesis.
"Alright, buddy, the food is yours."
Jin Muchen placed the takeout on the coffee table in the living room, and the black man happily handed the dirty dog food bowl to Jin Muchen.
