The dark clouds kept rolling, getting thicker and thicker, and the sky suddenly turned dark. Although it was only just approaching six o'clock in the afternoon, the sky was as dark as night. After a blinding flash of lightning, a deafening thunderclap echoed through the sky.
"The weather forecast didn't say it would rain? Is it going to be a heavy downpour? I didn't bring an umbrella, I need to get home before the rain starts, or I won't be able to make it back," a man in a suit, who looked like a company employee, said as he walked out of a toy store, looked up at the sky, and hurriedly headed home.
Today was his son Dongdong's fourth birthday, and he had bought the little boy a toy blimp, thinking the child would surely love it.
Another extremely bright flash of lightning streaked across the sky, followed by a bolt of lightning as thick as a bowl, which rapidly struck the ground. Fortunately, the nearby San Yu Company's branch had a thick lightning rod on the roof of a multi-story building, which attracted the lightning and completely directed it into the ground, preventing it from harming pedestrians on the street.
With the thunderclap, large raindrops began to fall from the sky, splashing up dust on the long-dry streets.
The man in the suit looked at the lightning rod, which was still connected to the dark sky, and felt a chill. The lightning was too thick and intense. Fortunately, it was caught by the lightning rod on the building's roof; otherwise, it would have burned and vaporized anyone it hit on the street.
A huge billboard stood in front of the San Yu Company's main building, with the four bright red characters "Trembling World" appearing as if they were dripping blood after being drenched by the rain, looking quite eerie. The man in the suit couldn't help but linger his gaze on it. This game, which could be operated with a new technology sensing headset, was set to launch in three days. He had always been a passionate fan of such games and had already bought a headset to play it.
The man's home was in the Happy Garden residential area, just a block away. The rain wasn't too heavy yet, so he could quickly run home. Looking at the dark and gloomy sky, he knew that if he sought shelter, the rain might not stop for a while, and he would miss his son Dongdong's fourth birthday.
After some thought, the man gritted his teeth and dashed home in the rain.
The dark clouds kept rolling, and the raindrops became more and more dense, soon turning into a torrential downpour, accompanied by lightning and thunder. This forced the pedestrians on their way home to quicken their pace, whether they had umbrellas or not, and run towards their homes.
The man in the suit ran with the crowd, suddenly feeling something was off.
The heavy rain, unable to drain through the underground sewers, formed large puddles on the roadside, which was normal. However, what was abnormal was that the puddles were red! As the water on the roadside grew deeper, the red color became more vivid and glaring, like pools of blood!
At the same time, a strange, bloody smell spread throughout the streets.
The man in the suit subconsciously touched his face, then looked at his hand, and saw the blood-red liquid. He couldn't help but scream, his face full of shock and horror.
...
Three days later.
Today was the launch day of "Trembling World."
Liu Qian was slightly nervous and excited as he waited. Because the prosthetic limb he used was very inconvenient, he could play very few games. Fortunately, San Yu Company had developed the first online game, "Trembling World," that could be operated with a sensing headset, allowing him to experience the excitement of gaming again.
A thunderclap echoed outside the small villa, and Liu Qian subconsciously glanced out the window. It was still pouring heavily, and it had been raining for three consecutive days. He had been staying alone in this mountain villa for over a month. The housekeeper, Aunt Zhao, came up the mountain twice a week to clean the house and bring him food for three to four days. Apart from Aunt Zhao, Liu Qian hadn't had any contact with anyone else for over a month.
Aunt Zhao had last come three days ago, and according to her schedule, she should have come today. But it was already afternoon, and she hadn't come up the mountain. The rain had been continuous for three days, and he wondered if there had been a landslide. If the rain continued, he was unsure if Aunt Zhao could still bring food up the mountain in time.
Fortunately, there was still enough food in the refrigerator for one day. The rain had been continuous for three days; it should stop by tomorrow, right?
Unconsciously, it was the last minute before "Trembling World" launched. Liu Qian put on the new sensing headset from San Yu Company and waited anxiously and excitedly for the moment to enter the game.
Finally, the game login interface opened, and Liu Qian automatically logged in with the ID bound to the sensing headset. After a series of verifications, the game interface appeared on the computer screen.
The screen was filled with red rain, and the city streets were crowded with aimlessly wandering zombies. The six surround sound speakers on the room's walls emitted the moans of the zombies, which excited every cell in Liu Qian's body, a fan of zombie games. He immediately used the sensing headset to select his character and initial weapon.
However, whether it was due to the vast game map or the large number of players logging in, the screen kept showing "Loading..." but didn't actually enter the game.
This made Liu Qian somewhat frustrated. San Yu Company, a large game company, should have the best servers and the best game optimization. Why was it taking so long to enter the game? He was eager to enter the zombie world and start killing, but now he was stuck on this screen with no response.
Should he restart the computer? After waiting a while longer, Liu Qian couldn't help but use his prosthetic limb to press the power button.
The computer didn't respond.
He pressed it again, still no response...
At that moment, another thunderclap echoed outside, and a bolt of lightning as thick as a bowl struck the satellite dish on the observation tower next to the villa, causing a burst of sparks at the top of the tower.
At the same time, a blinding white light appeared before Liu Qian's eyes, making him temporarily unable to see anything. But he heard a soft, electronic female voice in his ears...
"Welcome to Trembling World!"
