Chapter 8

Wang Yan hung up the communicator, picked up the envelope containing the secret letter that his mother had given him, and began to make some calculations.

"My current spatial points are 73.59. To advance to the rank of初级掌控者 (初级 means '初级' and 掌控者 means 'controller'), I need 26.41 more points, which means I need to hunt 2,641 more Level 2 monsters. Now that the admission notices from various universities have been announced, there are at most a month left before the start of the semester. I can stay here for at most ten more days, so I must hunt 265 monsters every day. It shouldn't be too difficult, but I need to hurry."

Wang Yan spread out the map and began to search for his next destination. After all, this was the Penglai Ruins, and he couldn't just wander around recklessly, or he might lose his life without even knowing what happened.

In the Penglai Ruins, among the collapsed buildings of the monster town, four F-class black-striped snakes were rapidly weaving through the structures. Wang Yan, holding his gun, quietly and stealthily followed behind. Compared to other monsters, the position of a snake's heart was more difficult to pinpoint, especially when they were moving at high speed, their bodies twisting and turning.

Wang Yan was panting heavily. At this moment, his weakness was evident. His mental power and soul strength were undoubtedly strong, but his physical body was far from sufficient, unable to keep up with the speed. In the past few days, due to his lack of speed, the number of monsters that had escaped from him was in the thousands.

"I swear, once I get back, I will definitely exercise. This is literally a matter of life and death," Wang Yan muttered to himself as he chased after the snakes.

"Exercising is necessary, but you don't need to go to such extremes. Your main task right now is to strengthen your mental power. As for your physical training, once your soul strength and gene evaluation number both reach 10, the system will automatically reward you with a set of physical training techniques," the skeleton mentor's voice suddenly sounded.

"Really? That's great!" Wang Yan couldn't help but be stunned. It was as if his thoughts had been answered. He couldn't help but feel a bit envious of his luck, which was absolutely off the charts.

"But I understand soul strength, but what is this gene evaluation number?"

"Gene evaluation number refers to the gene level of your physical body. However, don't get too excited yet. Don't forget that your current gene evaluation number is only 2," the skeleton mentor bluntly said.

"2?" Wang Yan was speechless. This number was indeed quite discouraging. "How can I improve my gene level?"

"When your spatial points reach 80, 90, and 100, there will be two additional beginner-level potion formulas available in the 107, 108, and 109 spaces, respectively. One of them is for gene level improvement, but you will need to exchange points for them. The exact number of points required will be revealed when you reach the necessary points."

"I... Okay." Wang Yan opened his mouth but then closed it. "I'll focus on reaching 80 points first."

Bang!

"Let's do it!" Wang Yan fired a shot into the sky.

He was truly angry. He realized how desperately he needed points. Nothing else mattered to him now; the most important thing was points. Of course, if Wang Yan really wanted to, it would be simple to find wandering souls in the space, but the skeleton mentor did not allow it. He insisted that Wang Yan personally hunt and plunder the souls of monsters. Wang Yan understood the mentor's intention, which was mainly to strengthen his mental control. Despite his complaints, he still followed the skeleton mentor's instructions.

The four F-class black-striped snakes, which had been rapidly moving, turned their heads toward the sound of the gunshot. They easily spotted Wang Yan, their 'prey.' Compared to them, Wang Yan, who was only at the intermediate warrior level, was not a threat. The four snakes exchanged glances and pounced on Wang Yan.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

After four consecutive gunshots, the four black-striped snakes, which had been preparing to hunt, all lost their breath.

Phew!

"It seems that sometimes courage is needed. Constantly tracking and ambushing is not as effective as a decisive battle. Although it's like dancing with death, I like this feeling," Wang Yan realized he had made the right decision. In such extremely dangerous situations, his mental power was highly concentrated, even more so than usual.

"Six hundred and forty-one!" Wang Yan pulled the trigger, and a G-class lightning hunter cat fell to the ground.

Wang Yan's consciousness entered the system space. His spatial points had reached 80, and the seventh petal of the first black lotus had completely lit up. With a thought, he entered the 107 space.

In addition to a metal piece similar to a black lotus petal, a virtual black lotus appeared in the air, displaying two rows of content.

Reward Type: Potion Formula

Potion Name: Golden Wound Healing Ointment, Beauty Cream

Potion Level: Beginner

Exchange Effect/Points: 0, 1

Exchange Formula/Points: 5, 10

"Wow! This feels a bit like selling dog head ointment..." Wang Yan's face was filled with black lines, but he still believed in it despite his words.

"However, I still need points to exchange for them, especially just the formulas, not the ready-made potions. I don't have spare points to waste on this. Of course, if it's the formula for gene level improvement, I would definitely need it, as it's crucial for my physical training."

"These are just beginner-level potion formulas, but they are quite advanced for you now. When you have enough points, you might consider exchanging them; they will have unexpected effects," the skeleton mentor's voice sounded again.

The skeleton mentor continued, "The materials required for these formulas are not rare herbs, but rather quite common. I also remember that you were admitted to the gene potion department. If you can exchange one or two formulas, it will be enough to establish your footing in your college, or even make a name for yourself."

"You're right, but I still need to accumulate more points. Strengthening my power is the most important thing for me now. The rest is still quite distant," Wang Yan agreed, nodding.

"Good. You can still be so rational in the face of such temptation; I didn't misjudge you," the skeleton mentor said with satisfaction. "However, the effect of the Golden Wound Healing Ointment does not require points to exchange. You can take a look at it first to get a clear understanding of the system's reward formulas."

"You're right. It won't cost any points, just a bit of time," Wang Yan nodded in agreement.

Golden Wound Healing Ointment: Has powerful blood-stopping and healing effects, can heal all external injuries within minutes, leaving no scars, and the skin will be like new.

"Really? That's amazing!" Wang Yan couldn't help but smack his lips. He didn't expect the Golden Wound Healing Ointment to have such powerful effects. He had initially thought the skeleton mentor was exaggerating, but if the description was true, the formula would definitely cause a frenzy if it were to leak out.

"Alright, when my points break 100, I'll put in more effort and hunt 500 more Level 2 monsters to exchange for the Golden Wound Healing Ointment formula. I want to see how effective it really is," Wang Yan nodded, making up his mind.

Although he was not familiar with gene potions, he knew a bit about them and understood the terrifying effects of the Golden Wound Healing Ointment. As the skeleton mentor had mentioned, if he could exchange one or two formulas, it would be enough to establish his footing in the college, or even make a name for himself. Wang Yan firmly believed that the Golden Wound Healing Ointment alone would be enough to cause a global earthquake.

After the Great Catastrophe, although humans and monsters were in a period of balanced transition, there were constant conflicts. It was normal for martial artists to get injured, lose an arm, or break a leg. In such a situation, a potion with such miraculous effects would be highly sought after by various forces and martial artists worldwide.

Realizing this, Wang Yan was determined to hunt 500 more monsters to exchange for the Golden Wound Healing Ointment formula.

After understanding this, Wang Yan did not let the matter of the potion formulas trouble him and resumed his hunting mission.

Since Wang Yan learned from Su Jianting that he had been admitted, he spent a total of nine days, finally raising his spatial points to 100. The system now showed that Wang Yan had become a初级掌控者. His mental power index was 10.31, his soul strength was 12.56, and his gene evaluation number was 2.

The reason his mental power index and soul strength were not proportional was mainly due to the varying mental and soul strengths of the monsters he had hunted. Some of the monsters had mental and soul strengths far greater than 1, with the strongest having a mental power of 7.1 and a soul strength of 8.3, making it a powerful mental attack-type monster. If Wang Yan's mental power had not been strong, he might have fallen to it.

Wang Yan was relatively satisfied with his spatial points, mental power index, and soul strength. At least it proved that effort pays off. The only thing that left him speechless was his gene evaluation number.

At this moment, Wang Yan eagerly opened the 108 and 109 spaces. Inside, like the 107 space, there was a black lotus, but the content displayed was different.

108 Space:

Reward Type: Potion Formula

Potion Name: Golden Erection Pill, Beauty Detox Pill

Potion Level: Beginner

Exchange Effect/Points: 2, 3

Exchange Formula/Points: 15, 20

109 Space:

Reward Type: Potion Formula

Potion Name: Longevity Cream, Bloodline Gene Liquid

Potion Level: Beginner

Exchange Effect/Points: 4, 5

Exchange Formula/Points: 25, 30

From the names, Wang Yan made a rough guess about the effects of these potions. Referring to the miraculous effects of the Golden Wound Healing Ointment, he was quite excited about the remaining five potion formulas. However, he did not have any spare points to waste, so his current situation could be described as being surrounded by a gold mine but unable to do anything about it.
