Wang Dashan was somewhat startled and uncertain when Wang Qi asked him about the presence of wolf packs in the area.
He did not take the question lightly and, after careful consideration, said, "It's only early autumn now. Even if there are wolf packs, they shouldn't be active in the outer areas... Only during the depths of winter, when the deep mountains lack prey, do wolf packs venture out."
In other words, there shouldn't be any wolf packs around at this time of year.
But Wang Qi still stood up, wiped his face, and took his hunting bow and machete to the door...
"Why aren't you sleeping?" Wang Dashan felt a bit low... Elderly people are most afraid of being disturbed during their sleep.
Wang Qi replied casually, "I'm still a bit uneasy, I'll go check outside."
Seeing this, Wang Dashan ignored him and turned back to continue sleeping... He thought Wang Qi would return soon.
Wang Qi then quietly pushed the door open...
Outside, the clouds had cleared, the rain had stopped, and the moon was bright with a few stars in the sky. The cool, fresh air rushed into Wang Qi's chest, making him feel refreshed and invigorated.
It seemed very peaceful outside.
Wang Qi felt somewhat relieved and was about to return to the wooden house.
However, just as he turned around, he suddenly heard a rustling sound, like the wind blowing through the grass.
His movements froze.
When he turned his head again, he found that the dark forest in front of him was exactly the same as the "illusion" he had seen when he left his body in sleep.
The swaying branches and leaves at the edge of the forest, and the sounds he heard...
In the next moment, his expression tightened, and he quickly unslung his short bow and drew an arrow.
Just then, a gray wolf suddenly pounced out of the forest, covering the ten meters in an instant, about to leap...
"Buzz~!"
The bowstring vibrated.
An arrow pierced the wolf's throat.
The gray wolf immediately fell silently.
But two more wild wolves rushed out of the forest...
This time, Wang Qi was much calmer.
He drew his bow with one hand and pulled an arrow from his quiver with the other, the entire action smooth and fluid, as if he had just raised his hand twice.
"Buzz! Buzz~"
The bowstring vibrated twice in quick succession.
Two short arrows flew out, hitting the vital spots on the heads of the two wild wolves.
One was pierced through the neck, and the other was directly through the eye socket.
"Thud! Thud!"
The two wild wolves hit the ground, dead.
However, since this was not a lone wolf attack, it must be a wolf pack.
More wild wolves emerged from the forest, crouching low and baring their teeth as they watched Wang Qi... The quick deaths of the first three wolves made them somewhat hesitant.
Wang Qi did not care why Wang Dashan had not come out despite the commotion. He took a deep breath to calm himself.
Facing the wolf pack, he gradually felt a sense of leaving his body in sleep, his heart as calm as still water, but his mind was crystal clear about what he needed to do.
His right hand slightly lowered, his fingertips lightly brushing the familiar touch of the arrows in the quiver on his waist...
Suddenly, he did not wait for the wolf pack to move, but instead drew an arrow and nocked it!
Why wait for them? Did he expect to scare them away?
Which archer doesn't have a dream of "standing and shooting"? Especially when he could shoot so fast...
His right hand moved rapidly, and due to the quick succession of movements, he formed a continuous shadow by his side.
His short bow vibrated repeatedly, and the arrows shot out in quick succession, accurately targeting the surrounding wolves.
"Thud! Thud!"
Arrows continuously hit the wild wolves, and even though the power of the arrows was somewhat reduced due to the high-speed shooting, they still inflicted serious injuries.
Wang Qi felt a surge of energy within him, and he gradually entered a state of heightened performance, feeling a bit exhilarated.
Originally, such high-speed shooting would be unsustainable, but now he found that his arms quickly adapted to the high-frequency drawing of the bow after a brief period of soreness.
He had heard that some people, after training, could draw their bows a thousand or even ten thousand times in a row... Suddenly, he felt he could be one of those people.
If that were true, with sufficient supplies and suitable terrain, he felt he could stand up to an entire army on his own.
He was just daydreaming.
But the current situation was indeed enough to make him feel overconfident.
One by one, the wild wolves fell, each with one of his arrows embedded in a vital spot.
Then he went all out, starting to "walk and shoot," taking a step and shooting an arrow, forcing his way to the edge of the dense forest... leaving a trail of wolf corpses behind him.
But just as he held the last arrow in his quiver, looking at the dark, featureless forest, unsure where to shoot...
"Buzz!!"
A loud, powerful bowstring vibration came from behind him, and a long iron-tipped arrow suddenly shot out, embedding itself in the tree next to Wang Qi.
"Boom!"
The tree shook violently, and a palm-sized hole appeared in the trunk.
The iron-tipped arrow then pierced through the tree, pinning another wolf to the ground behind it.
This wild wolf had clearly been trying to ambush Wang Qi from behind the tree...
Wang Qi turned around to see Wang Dashan at the door, holding his large bow wrapped in animal skin.
Although the large bow was tightly wrapped, Wang Qi knew it was definitely a steel-reinforced bow, requiring at least four stones of force... which is about 120 kilograms of strength to draw.
But seeing Wang Dashan's relaxed expression, he knew the bow was not a problem for him.
"You should have known to stay calm and not get carried away," Wang Dashan said sternly... He was very satisfied with Wang Qi's initial calm and rapid shooting, but he was very concerned about his later overconfidence.
Wang Qi's face turned slightly red... As an archer, he always had the heart to "walk and shoot."
But he learned from this lesson. While it's normal for an archer to get carried away when things are going well, dying from overconfidence is a different matter.
To avoid Wang Dashan saying more, Wang Qi looked at the pile of wolf corpses and said, "Alright, we don't need to hunt deeper into the mountains. Let's stay up all night and skin these pelts."
"The wolf meat is sour, and the rich don't like it. We can take some back to share with the villagers, and these wolf pelts can be sold for a good price in town."
Wang Dashan, looking at the dozen or so wolf corpses, felt a bit drained... But he obediently followed, as Wang Qi had always been the one managing things, and listening to him had kept him well-fed.
So, the two of them worked through the night. During the process of handling the corpses, they noticed from the wounds on the wolves that this was likely a wolf pack that had lost its territory... which explained why they had come to the outer forest before winter.
This was definitely a great harvest for the hunters, but Wang Qi and Wang Dashan's expressions were not very happy... They both understood the world and knew this might be their last time hunting together.
