Chapter 9
12 min read3,021 words
He met the girl during his high school years. They happened to attend the same school, the same class, and even sat next to each other. Due to his past experiences, he was quiet and reserved outside, only communicating with his sister and parents, and not with anyone else.
It was the understanding girl who comforted him. In the final year of high school, he confessed to her, and she accepted him. They even agreed to apply to the same university.
However, after the college entrance exam, his parents were involved in a car accident. To support the family and provide for his sister, he gave up the opportunity to attend university, even though both of them had been accepted. He received the university acceptance letter but chose to start working instead.
That year, he gave up further education to take care of his sister and began working. She, for him, gave up a prestigious university and chose a local one, just to be with him.
Although she attended a local university, they still saw each other rarely. He worked multiple jobs every day, and the girl also had to work part-time. Therefore, they cherished every moment they spent together, even if it was just holding hands while walking, which made her feel very content and happy.
Her mother did not oppose their relationship and did not look down on him for being poor. Everyone, including her friends and classmates, believed they would definitely be together in the future. He thought so too, believing he would spend his life with her, but never expected her to suddenly break up with him.
That night, he cried for her while drunk, and she didn't see it. It was the second time he cried; the first was for his parents, and the second was for her. No matter how much hardship or difficulty he faced, he never cried. Only these two times did he cry, because the pain from his parents' death and the girl's departure directly hurt his heart, a pain he couldn't bear.
Su Zhe didn't blame her; he had no right to. Relationships are based on mutual consent. Moreover, the girl was right; he couldn't provide her with a happy and stable life. After being together for four years, he hadn't given her anything. She understood everything about him, always considering his needs first and accommodating him, while he had done nothing for her.
He only blamed himself for being incapable, unable to even keep his girlfriend.
When he woke up the next day, he worked even harder, exhausting himself every day. This way, he could fall asleep quickly and avoid thinking about her. He was avoiding and afraid of remembering everything about her.
The more he thought, the more agitated he became, and the less he could sleep.
At that moment, he heard a strange noise from under the bed. He turned to look and saw that it was Baby's sulcata tortoise. It seemed the pet box hadn't been placed properly, allowing the sulcata tortoise to escape and crawl into his room.
Feeling agitated, Su Zhe didn't think about the consequences. He reached out and placed his hand on the tortoise's shell, transferring all his divine power to it in a fit of pique.
After depleting his divine power, Su Zhe passed out as he wished. The sulcata tortoise, having absorbed 100 points of divine power, underwent a significant transformation. Surrounded by a strange light, the tortoise's size increased visibly, but the unconscious Su Zhe didn't see it.
The next day, Su Zhe, who had slept soundly, was woken by Baby's cheers. He rubbed his temples and got up to see what was happening.
As soon as he stepped out of his room, he was stunned by the scene before him. Baby was sitting on the back of a giant tortoise, which was crawling around.
At first, Su Zhe was shocked and prepared to rush over, fearing the giant tortoise might harm Baby. However, seeing that the tortoise was very obedient to Baby, moving wherever Baby pointed, he relaxed.
Su Zhe walked over and picked up Baby. The excited Baby noticed Su Zhe's arrival and proudly said, "Brother, look, Baby's little tortoise has grown into a big, clumsy tortoise."
Hearing this, Su Zhe looked at the giant tortoise at his feet. Upon closer inspection, it indeed resembled Baby's sulcata tortoise, but its size was a hundred times larger. The plastron of Baby's sulcata tortoise was about 5 to 6 centimeters, not exceeding 7 centimeters, while the plastron of the current sulcata tortoise was at least 60 centimeters.
At this moment, he remembered what he had done the previous night. He hadn't expected that his unintentional action would result in such a large tortoise.
Moreover, the shell color and shape of the sulcata tortoise were not much different from those of a juvenile, suggesting it still had a lot of growing space.
When the sulcata tortoise fully grows, it might rival the Galapagos tortoise, the largest land tortoise in the world.
Su Zhe's nose twitched, and he faintly smelled something foul. Following the smell, he found the source in a corner of the living room, covered with newspapers. Seeing that Su Zhe had discovered it, Baby, who was in Su Zhe's arms, quickly explained, "This isn't Baby's; it's the big, clumsy tortoise's." She then lowered her head and said to the sulcata tortoise, "Big, clumsy tortoise, I'm sorry, but I can't help you. Pikachu, bless you."
Su Zhe was both amused and exasperated by Baby's antics. He lifted the newspapers and found a large pile of tortoise droppings. It seemed that after the sulcata tortoise defecated, Baby, fearing Su Zhe's anger, had covered it with newspapers.
The sulcata tortoise at his feet seemed to know Su Zhe was angry and began to nuzzle his pant leg, as if trying to please him.
"You big, clumsy tortoise, come with me," Su Zhe said, carrying Baby to the bathroom and pointing to the toilet, "This time, I'll let you off, but from now on, you must defecate here."
The sulcata tortoise seemed to understand and nodded.
Su Zhe put Baby on the sofa in the living room and began to clean the house, removing the sulcata tortoise's droppings.
After finishing, he filled a cup with water, squeezed some toothpaste onto a toothbrush, and gave it to Baby to use. Their bathroom had two sinks, one high and one low. The low sink was perfect for Baby. They both had fun brushing their teeth and playing in the bathroom.
He helped Baby tidy her messy hair, then fed some turtle food to the small golden-headed box turtles and two small grass turtles. Before leaving, he also transferred 5 points of divine power to the six small golden-headed box turtles.
Then he took Baby out, leaving the sulcata tortoise behind to guard the house. The sulcata tortoise was too large and would attract too much attention if taken outside.
