"Left?" Na Soyeon came out of the bathroom and saw Lee Yunjae walking in from the entrance.
"Yep! Left!" After sending off Park Gwi-ri and the others, Lee Yunjae started to tidy up the mess of the flight chess on the floor.
Na Soyeon sat on the sofa and asked Lee Yunjae, "They are really entertainers? How come they don't look like it... No, no, if they were entertainers, I would definitely remember them!"
Lee Yunjae shook his head with a bitter smile and said, "Ah... Now you understand their difficulties! They are just an ignored group! They have endured years of training, harboring dreams of becoming stars, but when they finally become stars, they realize no one pays attention to them... That's the greatest sorrow!"
At that moment, Lee Yunjae recounted all the news and information he knew about KARA to Na Soyeon, who nodded in a half-understanding manner.
"Since you get along well with them, why don't you write a song for them? With your talent, it shouldn't be hard to create a song tailored for them. Just like when you wrote 'Spell' for TVXQ, 'No Longer in Love' and 'Like Being Shot' for Baek Ji-young, and 'Gee' for Girls' Generation. You could help them out..." Na Soyeon looked at him with a puzzled expression, "Aren't you always eager to help your friends?!"
Lee Yunjae put the tidied-up flight chess on the glass coffee table, sat next to Na Soyeon, and tapped her head, saying, "Sis, can we avoid using your simple mind to think about such profound issues in the future?!"
Na Soyeon slapped the back of Lee Yunjae's head, then put her hands on her hips and stared down at him, exclaiming, "What do you mean?! Are you saying I'm stupid?!"
Lee Yunjae shook his head vigorously and said, "How could that be... My sis is just innocent, not stupid... You're the cutest..."
Na Soyeon rolled her eyes at him, huffed, and sat on the sofa, "What's so complicated about this... It's just writing a song for them..."
Lee Yunjae shook his head and said, "Let's not even talk about writing a song. This isn't something that can be salvaged with just one song. If that were the case, would DSP be afraid of not getting a good song...?"
Pausing, Lee Yunjae found a comfortable position on the sofa, then rested his legs on Na Soyeon's lap, and continued, "I wrote 'No Longer in Love' and 'Like Being Shot' for Baek Ji-young because I felt sorry for her, and she was a singer I once adored. As a fan, I wanted to help her as much as I could. Besides, it was my first attempt at songwriting, and I didn't know if it would be good or not... I wrote 'Spell' for myself, but I never got the chance to perform it... I wrote 'Gee' for Girls' Generation because of you... because of Jessica and the others. To be honest, when I wrote 'Gee,' I didn't know how S.M. positioned Girls' Generation or what direction they were taking. I just wrote it based on my feelings, almost blindly. But fortunately, it worked out.
But now, I can't just write songs for anyone."
"Why not?" Na Soyeon asked, staring at Lee Yunjae.
"Because of the change in my status! I've signed with LOEN, so I have to consider LOEN in everything I do.
Think about it, if I write a song for KARA and it happens to be a hit, I would naturally get some royalties, but that wouldn't be good news for LOEN. If LOEN is planning to launch a girl group, wouldn't my actions create a lot of trouble for the new group?
So, I can't just write songs for anyone now!" Lee Yunjae explained.
Na Soyeon frowned, realizing that what seemed like a simple matter to her was actually much more complicated than she thought.
Sighing, Lee Yunjae said, "I'm not a songwriter who makes a living by selling songs. If KARA were from LOEN or my future studio, I would definitely do my best to help them. Even though my abilities are limited, I have confidence in creating a hit song for them. But the current situation doesn't allow me to do that... Do you understand?"
Na Soyeon stubbornly said, "Hmph... You make it sound like they can't do anything without your help. Do you think you're God or something?!"
"Alright... Are you being unreasonable again?" Lee Yunjae mocked.
"Then I'll ask you!" Suddenly, Na Soyeon pounced on Lee Yunjae's chest and asked, "If I debut in the future, will you write a song for me?"
Um... Lee Yunjae was taken aback for a moment, then nodded, "Of course!"
"Then why can't you write a song for KARA?" Na Soyeon demanded.
Lee Yunjae felt a headache coming on. It seemed his thick-skinned sister still didn't get it. So he explained in the simplest and most straightforward way, "If you debut, I can write a song for you or your group. It might not be reasonable, but it's emotional, after all, you're my sister... But writing a song for KARA wouldn't be reasonable or emotional. Do you understand now?"
"Why do you need to explain so much... I'm not stupid, you know!"
In the end, Na Soyeon rolled her eyes at Lee Yunjae, almost making him choke with frustration.
...............................................................................
Christmas Eve and Christmas passed, and life returned to its usual pace. In the last six days of 2008, Lee Yunjae didn't go anywhere, not even out of the house. He locked himself in his room and worked hard, writing nearly fifteen songs, but none of them met his satisfaction. His bedroom was almost a garbage dump, with music sheets scattered all over the floor, one on top of another, almost covering the entire room. The trash can was filled with crumpled sheets of paper.
Being unable to express his thoughts in words was undoubtedly frustrating, and Lee Yunjae was truly facing such a situation. He had a clear idea in his mind, but couldn't put it into words.
What troubled Lee Yunjae was that this "inspiration" was too long. If he were to express it in words, it would be a song that would take seven or eight minutes to sing, which was absurd. No song lasts that long.
On December 30th, a casual remark from Na Soyeon gave Lee Yunjae a sudden insight.
"Too long? Just split it into two songs!"
Na Soyeon's offhand comment seemed to clear the clouds from Lee Yunjae's mind, revealing a bright sun.
Right! If it's too long, just break it in the middle! Lee Yunjae slapped his head, wondering why he hadn't thought of such a simple solution. Truly, the observer sees what the participant misses.
In the end, Lee Yunjae spent the whole night writing the first half, turning it into a song. He also had a reliable idea for how to connect the two songs, making them cohesive.
Finally, on December 31st, Lee Yunjae brought the four songs he had created for his first album to Bae Song-in's office. However, as soon as he entered, he sensed an unusual atmosphere.
"President, what's wrong?" Seeing Bae Song-in's gloomy face, Lee Yunjae cautiously asked, as he had never seen Bae Song-in in such a bad mood.
Bae Song-in sighed and threw a card-like object in front of Lee Yunjae. Lee Yunjae picked it up and saw that it was an invitation to the live broadcast of the MBC Song Festival that night.
"Knowing that we LOEN have very few artists, MBC still gave us three slots. Isn't that just setting us up to fail!" Bae Song-in said angrily.
Lee Yunjae smiled, understanding the situation, and consoled, "President, you can't blame MBC. When they wrote down three slots, they were considering your respect. They knew LOEN didn't have any standout artists, but they still politely wrote down three, doing their due diligence and giving you face. If they had written just one, you would have been furious!"
Bae Song-in looked at Lee Yunjae, shook his head, and sighed, "Ah... It's really frustrating. Here we are, a large agency, and we don't have a single standout artist. What kind of situation is this! By the way, how are your songs coming along? Tomorrow is 2008, and you only have two months to prepare. In these two months, you need to record the songs and shoot the MVs. Time is tight, and the task of four songs is heavy!"
"No problem, we can start recording tomorrow. I've already completed the creation!" Lee Yunjae said casually.
"What?!" Bae Song-in widened his eyes, looking at Lee Yunjae as if he had heard something astonishing.
