The next day, when Chen Mu woke up, it was just beginning to dawn.

He cracked an egg, cooked a bowl of noodles, and ate it with great satisfaction. He then picked up his crossbow again, tucked a dagger into his belt, covered it with his clothes, and stepped out of the apartment in his military boots.

Just as he walked down the stairs, a door suddenly opened, and a young man's head poked out, shouting from a distance:

"Hey, buddy, where are you going?"

The young man kept his head and most of his body hidden behind the security door, looking at Chen Mu with a slightly wary gaze.

Chen Mu glanced at him but didn't respond.

The young man became a bit anxious and shouted loudly, "Hey, buddy, it's chaos out there now. You can't just go out randomly."

Chen Mu glanced at him and finally stopped, "Have you been outside?"

Seeing that Chen Mu was willing to talk to him, the young man quickly nodded, "Yeah, you don't know how many bodies are out there. No one knows what's going on. It's terrifying."

The young man, who probably hadn't spoken to anyone since the dark period began, became visibly excited when someone finally talked to him, "There was an earthquake a few days ago, and we couldn't see the sun. Do you know what happened? Damn the seismology bureau, they didn't give any information about such a long-lasting earthquake. They're just a bunch of idiots. And the internet is completely down, so we don't know what's happening in other places."

As he spoke, the young man came out of his room. He was about twenty-five years old, tall and thin, and looked like a white-collar worker. Otherwise, he wouldn't have been able to live in this apartment. He spoke with a lot of enthusiasm.

Chen Mu looked at him, "What do you want?"

The young man was taken aback for a moment, then his face showed a bit of embarrassment, "Buddy, you live here too, right? I've seen you before... hehe, do you have any food left? To be honest, I ran out of food a day ago. There are dead bodies everywhere outside, and I don't dare to go too far, so... don't worry, I'll pay you, ah! Wait, I'll go get the money!"

The young man, fearing that Chen Mu wouldn't agree, turned and ran back into his room. Chen Mu, however, shook his head and turned to leave.

Money? What's the point of money?

During the three days of the dark period, all government agencies were destroyed by a mysterious force. All high-ranking leaders in various countries had mysteriously disappeared. Laws were ineffective, and currency, as a medium of exchange, was just a pile of waste paper without a functioning government.

Chen Mu certainly wasn't foolish enough to exchange anything with him.

However, after taking a few steps, a shrill scream suddenly came from behind him, followed by the sound of something breaking and a heavy object falling.

Then, the scream abruptly stopped, and there was no more sound.

Chen Mu turned his head, his expression changing.

He then drew the string of his crossbow, adjusted the dagger at his waist, and walked step by step towards the room.

The young man hadn't closed the door when he ran back into his room. Chen Mu approached the security door with his crossbow, kicked it open lightly with his foot, and looked inside. The living room was in a mess, but there was no sign of anything unusual.

Just as he was about to continue inside, he saw a woman with a fringe, long golden hair, blue eyes, and distinct Western features stagger out.

Under normal circumstances, this woman would undoubtedly be a beautiful and lovely woman by both Eastern and Western standards. However, with fresh blood all over her and a bloody kitchen knife in her hand, you wouldn't associate her with any words related to "beautiful" or "lovely." Moreover, it was a scorching summer, yet she was wearing a thick down jacket, which was highly unreasonable!

Without hesitation, Chen Mu knew that this beautiful Western woman was definitely one of the Descenders!

His thoughts raced. In his previous life, he hadn't seen anyone in this room when he left the apartment.

This indicated that in his previous life, a Descender had descended into this room on the third day of the dark period, killed the young man, and then left.

Chen Mu's appearance just happened to witness this event.

When the Western woman saw Chen Mu, her face immediately twisted into a grotesque expression, and she charged at him with the kitchen knife. Chen Mu didn't hesitate, aimed briefly, and pulled the trigger.

With a "whoosh," the sharp and pointed arrow shot through the air, piercing through the woman's down jacket and into her chest.

The thick down jacket probably absorbed some of the arrow's kinetic energy. Even though Chen Mu's shot was accurate, it only caused the woman to fall to the ground in pain, but didn't kill her.

However, the fragile human body was insignificant in the face of the killing weapons invented by humans—a single arrow had already rendered her incapable of resistance.

Chen Mu put his crossbow down against the wall and drew the dagger from his waist, cautiously approaching the woman step by step.

He moved very slowly and carefully. Since the woman was clearly a Descender, she might have some strange superpowers. One mistake could have dire consequences.

When he reached the woman, he kicked the bloody kitchen knife far away. The woman on the ground only writhed and convulsed in pain, making no other movements. For a moment, even Chen Mu almost thought he had made a mistake, and the woman was just an innocent human.

But Chen Mu quickly came to his senses.

From the brief conversation with the young man, the young man hadn't mentioned anyone else in his room, which meant this woman had appeared suddenly.

When she saw him, she clearly intended to harm him. Her vicious gaze and expression were far from friendly.

Moreover, throughout the entire time, the woman hadn't said a word, only groaning in pain. Even if she was a Westerner who didn't speak Chinese, she could have at least made some sounds.

This situation was clearly something that only happened when Descenders descended during the first three months of the chaos period.

Even if the woman wasn't a Descender, she had killed the young man and intended to harm him. Chen Mu wouldn't feel any guilt if he killed her by mistake.

In his previous life, he had killed countless Descenders, and a significant number of humans as well.

Chen Mu's eyes narrowed, and he swung his dagger, slicing across the woman's throat, then quickly retreated.

The sharp, cold blade cut through the woman's pale, tender throat, leaving a deep bloodstain. Warm blood spurted from the wound, splattering the entire floor. The woman's screams turned into a hissing sound, the life in her eyes gradually fading, and she slowly fell to the ground...
