Chapter 3

2 min read572 words

Fernando, the border lord, has a short stay in the capital.

Therefore, he hurriedly explained to my father that he wanted to break his engagement with my older sister Isabella and re-engage with me.

"Dislikes bugs... and Isabella said she doesn't want to live in the countryside and be separated from me. So, you want to re-engage with Sylvia... Well, if Lord Fernando is fine with it, I have no complaints. Is Isabella okay with this?"

"…………"

Isabella was visibly unhappy throughout and only nodded silently in response to Father's question.

I moved to accommodate her whims, so I find her attitude rather unfair...

"Say something. You're okay with this, right?"

"If Lord Fernando prefers Sylvia over me—"

The way Isabella phrased it was somehow off.

It's as if she has forgotten that she was the one who disliked the engagement to Lord Fernando.

"That's right. I now prefer Sylvia over Isabella, who dislikes living in the borderlands."

"―!?! N-no, then, it's fine to break the engagement."

Upon hearing Lord Fernando's words, Isabella showed a slightly surprised face and agreed with a trembling voice.

Why is she so unhappy, Sister? Did she not really want to break the engagement?

No, if that were the case, she wouldn't have forced me to take her place...

"Then, I'll take Sylvia home right away. You should prepare your things. Most of what you need is already there, though."

"Yes. I'll get everything ready quickly."

The condition for me to take Isabella's place—was to go to the borderlands tomorrow and live with Lord Fernando.

Father approved without much opposition, so I will leave this house tomorrow.

I do feel a bit nostalgic, but there's nothing I can do.

If my leaving can resolve everything, then it's a small price to pay.

And so, Lord Fernando left our house.

Now, I need to prepare for tomorrow—

"You always thought you could take everything from me. I never imagined you would even take my fiancé."

"Huh? But Isabella said she couldn't live in the countryside—"

"I don't need your excuses. Maybe true love has blossomed between you and the border lord, but isn't that terribly unfair...!"

I'm scared. Isabella is so incoherent that it's frightening.

It's as if she thinks I seduced Lord Fernando and stole her position as his fiancée.

Sister, don't you remember what you commanded me to do a few days ago?

"You forced me to take your place because you didn't want to live in the countryside. Did you want to marry Lord Fernando? If so, you can still—"

"Anything I say now would be in poor taste! I could have forgiven you for taking things, but to take a person as well—"

What has happened to you, Sister?

It almost seems like you really believe your fiancé was stolen from you...

"But I will endure if you can be happy. Stay well in the borderlands—"

When I genuinely expressed my concern, Isabella suddenly smiled and returned to her room.

I don't quite understand, but I guess she is okay with it. I felt a bit uneasy about her saying she would endure, but that's just how she is, so I won't think too much about it.

The next day, I boarded the carriage with Lord Fernando, who had come to fetch me, and headed for the borderlands—.

Isabella's mind is a bit off.
